Calling for free using voip

I thought that there were places that I can make free calls on the net, but I can't seem to find any. I see a lot of voip services, but you have to buy special phones, may monthly fees and all that stuff, and skype is only free from pc to pc. Where are the free calls?

keep your ear to the ground. a lot of VOIP providers will run specials for a month (or more) where you can call for free. last year, skype was free for a good long while.
I think yahoo has some free time this year, i don't recall when though.

thanks for answering man.. but skype has started charging for their PC to phone calls. they suck! any more suggestions? would you know any VoIP provider that works on dial up?

As a rule, any service that connects into the POTS isn't going to be free for non-internet-only calls (at least, not often enough for it to be a good deal, and often with other commitments). This is because it costs major money to run POTS endpoints, and they aren't going to just let everyone abuse them... they have to reclaim those costs somehow.

i guess we cant do anything about that now, can we? fine, would you happen to know any VoIP service that might work on dial up connection?

Are you shitting me? I used Skype when I was overseas and loved it. 50USD or so lasted for 5 months of international phone calls.
Everything free has a catch with it, either a commitment or ads or somesuch. Honestly if you can afford (or afford to steal) decent broadband why can't you cover less than 2 cents a minute for a phone call?

for real! and 50 bucks is kinda expensive for me! im currently paying out my student loans so there. i cant afford a broadband internet either. too expensive

You realize that VOIP is meant for broadband connections right? If you need a really cheap phone you can either use a pay-phone, or a pay-per-call cell-phone.
If you're planning on using VOIP over dial-up, well ... just ... shudders.

I remember seeing some skype like VOIP site, that offered free voip in exchange for listening to adverts over the phone. *shudder*
And otherwise you can always call collect :) Or exploit* google calendar to send free SMS messages.
Or just buy a mobile with one of those charger cards, they only cost a few bucks (20 euro's, too lazy to look up funny money conversion) and just never ever make a phone call with it unless you really really need to. But everyone is free to call you.
* well more exploiting like in the normal use of the word, nothing technical or fancy

I've used one before called VOIP stunt that lets you make free phone calls to most of the major countries. And to not sound like some kind of advertising whore, I must admit the quality wasn't great, but heck, it was free.

Even if this was possible, if you're already paying for the phone line, why pay another fee on top of that for VoIP? I doubt you'd find a service that would save you any money on long distance in the long run, after paying for monthly fees, internet service, etc.
And making a simple phone call would turn into a multi-step pain in the ass that way.

No, he wants to use the VOIP to connect to the internet to another dial-up ISP, to make another VOIP call, to tell someone to put all his bills on a wooden table, and...
