MS SQL is like $700.
Since when?
The lowest price for something remotely usable is $931 and that does not come with CALs. A CAL will cost you ~$275. That is per user or device that will need to access the db.
So yeah, not exactly cheap.

Save for the lack of MVCC, yeah -- although the SQL Server team is welcome to join that club any time they wish :)
(P.S. I was referring to your budget for machine resources, etal as well as $$$)

Multi-Version Concurrency Control -- apparently all you need to do to get it in recent SQL Servers is flip an option on -- only reason I suspect it isn't on by default is due to the breakage it'd cause for folks who assume pessimistic locking of the entire world.
