Backups shall not DoS the frakking server!
-
That sounds like a WTF. If the orchestration layer goes down, it seems like it should preserve the status quo until it is back up. It may not be 100% performant, but it should remain functional.
Yup, it should. The actual problem was that the backup unit had corrupted firmware and the entire system stopped working due to the mismatch of primary and backup. The company was militant about centralization and standardization. It's always humorous when that blows up in their face. When they acquired us, they demanded that we re-wire the entire building with Belkin brand wire.

15 bucks a gig for 3 years. Plus an additional 7.50 for backups
Sounds about right. We charge $1.25/GB/year for cold storage and that is, near as makes no difference, 100% profit.

We should compile a list of such behavior so that when people here are looking for employment they can look up potential employers and see if they can deal with the idiocy.

That's daylight robbery. You're a persuasive bandit, you are!

I have to pay for these ivory back scratchers somehow... ;)

We get our highly-resilient storage at £300/TB/year (and think that's expensive)
£5/GB for SAN for us. In our own data centres.
That's a one off though, not yearly.

That's a one off though, not yearly. We also have a free first 20TB, but that's insignificant for the amount of data I'm dealing with. I'm trying to keep the 5 year projected budget down to £25k, instead of hitting £5M as my first back-of-an-envelope calculation came out to.
Did I mention that we're dealing with quite a lot of data? :D My current plan is to get most of the stuff onto tape ASAP. Fortunately, we mostly just need to keep it, but not keep it very live.

I'm out of touch with what tape's been doing. How many TB can you stuff on a dollar's worth of tape these days?

Don't know. Haven't got the price list for that yet, as that's in the middle of a big technology refresh. <And WTF is that one a pony for?!
