Elite: Not Really Dangerous

Revised rule:
Don't discuss moderator action in-thread. Take it to meta.

, What are the people who deleted the meta category going to do when election season comes around?
-
Very much depends on the community. As I read @Rhywden's posts, this was a developer-run video game forum. In that case, you're not dealing with a community of equals, and the whole dynamic changes - the developer/studio/community team is in charge. They make the rules. They enforce the rules. And there won't be an election season.
-
Thats what I like about this place here. We can just page @boomzilla, telling him HE DOESN'T DO HIS JOB and then all have a good laugh about it.
Has anybody besides Sam ever gotten banned on this forum (since Discourse)? And by that I mean somebody who contributed more than 1 spam post.Filed Under: Curious!

Well, there is an election season. It's called "voting with your wallet".
The mods obviously don't see it that way - they straightout told me that we don't pay for the forum. However, the silence was deafening when I asked where else the money was coming from.

Oops, I was referring to Discourse attempting to automatically create a topic in the Meta category... at some undetermined point in the future.
Actually, I should stage a mock TL4 election at some point to see where pain points would be. Maybe @LikeBot can help out.

@themanwhosaysANUS is suspended until June 2016. There was the guy who was using bots in an attempt to crapflood. I think he was dealt with as a spammer, though that's not technically what he was.
Of course, there was MPS on the old forums.
-
And there was at least one genuine spam topic recently. At least I think it was. Flagged it, guess it was dealt with, apparently I can't see my flags anywhere to check.

Spam flags are dealt with very speedily when the spammer is TL0 (or TL1?) and that's something that Discourse manages to get right. (I flagged some spam last year and it was squelched immediately.)
-

Seems he's too busy posting. Between that and getting kids off his lawn, he doesn't have much time left to do his job.
-

Yes, they get dealt with pretty quickly, and TL3+ flags for that hide stuff. Typically, the post and the poster get nuked once a mod deals with it, so that stuff goes down the memory hole pretty quickly. I'm sure most people aren't even aware it ever happens.
-
TL3+ flags for that hide stuff
I.... have to commend Discourse here. Nice idea. And since I was already TL3 at that point I just probably hid it for everyone else immediately.
-
It's a shame there isn't some sort of Janitor badge for that sort of thing, but that's the sort of badge that ought to be a core Discourse feature, and I try to avoid interacting with meta.d…
-
Seems to me as if their actual tech support is equally useless.
So, there's this thread wherein people tell us that their ships exploded without any reason, thus sometimes robbing them of hours of progress (i.e. millions of credits for rebuy and cargo) . They're told to open a ticket in order to get the lost money back. Then those tickets are not looked on for weeks.
And then they're closed with either of two answers:
- "The ticket is so old and you haven't posted any updates so we deem the matter as resolved."
- "The issue has been fixed by a recent patch."
Best part was another response where the player was supposed to prove that he flew the ship he flew.
-
Which game is this? I'll have to make sure I don't play it…

It helps a lot if you don't think of that as food…

People in different regions have different tastes.

People in different regions have different tastes.
True dat, but I don't like my sausages to have the texture of window putty.
-
Then you need to add even more water to disperse the ingredients and make the hot dogs juicier!
-
The problem with a Janitor badge is that it would be so hard to get that people would be incentivized to create their own spam...
-
create their own spam...

Damn pendants, always latching on that single small thing you did that one time...

It's a shame there isn't some sort of Janitor badge for that sort of thing,
There's a "First Flag" badge. In places where they don't Do It Wrong so much, it's probably closer to the equivalent of that.

So, in other news about Elite:
- We now have ships exploding inside the station while being docked inside the hangar
- We have a news service which reports events which do not happen (currently advertises a non-existant community goal in a supposedly Federation station which is actually non-aligned)
- The writer for the news service (yes, an actual human) needs a dictionary, stat. Examples: "the Federation will not stand ideally by" or "the ship entered the hanger" or "For too long the Nijotec Syndicate have been praying on the weak"
- And of course there's the vaunted Space Station With A Hyperdrive. Which was supposed to make a jump daily - that was two weeks ago. But it finally happened: The station has now travelled the unimaginable distance of, wait for it... 12 lightyears. To put that into perspective: The colonized space is 300 LY across. Additionally, during the jump the station has lost the ability to refuel, trade, communicate or repair ships. Oh, and if you're thinking: A jumping station, how cool - the actual "jump" happens during server downtime.

Just how do you screw up that badly?

Sounds like I could get better fuel mileage out of a carrier in EVE at that pace...The writer for the news service (yes, an actual human) needs a dictionary, stat. *guffaws*

I'm not sure. One player reported another bug where he fitted his ship with new turreted lasers and could see the turrets tracking and firing at another ship supposedly outside the station.
Well, since firing your weapons inside the station is strictly forbidden the emplaced weaponry of the station itself then made short work of him.

10 is suspend, 11 is (premature) unsuspend.
Quite why Galgorah simply didn't delete that user I dunno.
My stuff was testing.
No bans that fit your criteria.

"For too long the Nijotec Syndicate have been praying on the weak"
“Forgive me, my son, but my flock and I must commune with our God while kneeling on your leg while you are lying sick in bed.”
-

I'm glad he didn't. Sometimes I forget who the user is that's suspended, and I click the link. Then I laugh, because "themanwhosaysANUS" is kind of funny.
-

Scotty sabotaged their trans-warp engines. Obvs.
or "For too long the Nijotec Syndicate have been praying on the weak"
Well they're an alien culture. They could clobber the weak, sit on their chests and pray to their strange alien Gods. You don't know!!!

One more addition to the WTF pile:
Elite supposedly has this background simulation which supposedly made offline impossible, SimCity-style.
Now, large parts of the workings of this simulation are either opaque or broken but there was one thing that was supposed to work:
Whenever some opposing faction reaches 50% influence, civil war was guaranteed.
Of course, some people rallied others to a system (Lugh) in order to test this mechanism. And, oh boy, did they succeed: The opposing faction they chose stands at 96% influence now. But no civil war.
Wait, what? Well, you see, the trigger for initiating the civil war didn't fire and will not fire anymore due to the fact that the threshold has been passed for a while now.
I'm not sure, but that's not the way a sane trigger dealing with a range of numbers is supposed to work. I'm certain I'd find something like
if(influence_float==0.5){trigger_civil_war();}
in the code somewhere...Don't take my word for it: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=71327&page=181&p=1834660#post1834660
