Windows 10 Upgrade to be Free as in Beer (if you don't have an MS account, come in here and @blakeyrat will give you $50)

you sir are wrong. the top is where it belongs!
You're madder than I am!
The task bar is only at home on the bottom!
-
You misquoted me. Be ashamed.
Windows + small screen = side
Windows + large screen = bottom
Linux + any screen = top
-
You misquoted me. Be ashamed.
It was intentionally nefarious. I would've gotten away with it too, if not for those meddling facts!
Linux + any screen = top
Carry on, we have no quarrel here.
-
You misquoted me. Be. ashamed
Windows +smallany screen = bottom
Linux + any screen =topbottomFTFY
-
I only put Windows' taskbar at the bottom because some shitty awful evil programs sometimes spawn with their title bars inside the taskbar if it's on top.
Stupid awful developers.

Preach it, brother!
-
You're all wrong. It goes at the top of the lower third.
-
And if you don't know the first three letters? Like, I wouldn't be able to tell from memory what exactly is the "run command prompt with all Visual Studio stuff set up in environment variables" shortcut called; only knew it was in "Visual Studio" directory (real example of me being annoyed at Start Screen). I hate scrolling horizontally when looking for something.
(I'll catch up shortly, haven't passed this post yet)
In Win7 "stu" got me the command prompt. It would have in 8.1 too, except vs2013 fucked up the shortcuts (I got the shortcut to open the folder that has the cmdprompt shortcuts)

Windows + small screen = side
Windows + large screen = bottom
Linux + any screen = topOh. I need to revoke my like then.
It belongs on the left side on landscape monitors. Bottom for portrait.
-
I honestly don't understand the desire to go back to one.
You don't need to. You just need to be aware that it's basically Luddites who can't handle change. These are the same people who hated Vista, XP, and 95 because they were different.
-
It takes the whole screen, for starters.
You spelled "I can see more applications at one time and I like it!" wrong.
-
You spelled "I lose eye contact with what I was doing just now and lose concentration!" wrong.
Oh, right, sorry. Also, FTFY.
-

If only you could try "tools" or "command":
-
Oh, right, sorry. Also, FTFY.
You also lose eye contact and concentration when you look at the Start Menu
-
Also, if you want multiple desktops, just download sysinternals
Or just wait for 10, which
will havehasthem now.
-
top of your monitors, WHERE IT DAMN WELL SHOULD BE
Ah, a filthy Macintosh lover. I might have known.

Discurse must be baked, because it's not showing up for me, only in your quote.
I posted, saw the image outline, and then it vanished. What's wrong with your software, @codinghorror?
-

Yeah, I saw that.
It only showed the image in the quote after I edited it and swapped the < and &lgt; for < and >

BTdubs: 10 preview is out in the wild: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-iso
That's the tech preview that's been out for a while. The Consumer preview is I think due next week.

I did that too and it didn't work. It'll probably magically come back in an hour, and then Jeff'll come by and go "what's the problem?" and post a sad clown gif or something.

Quite likely.http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/image-disappears-in-post-but-renders-in-quote/7476/1

Not in peripheral view.

It's not about detail, it's about my psychic comfort.

HoloLens
Like a year ago, I noticed that Vuzix was getting their lens patent from Nokia. I then began to wonder if Microsoft was involved somehow. I turned out to be wrong; their hardware doesn't look anywhere near advice. But it looks like they're actually going to do this right.
So I came here to see if anyone was talking about it (between jobs, and I only visit here at work, normally). I searched. Only one mention. OTL
I decided to go ahead and play around with 10 in preparation, and have found it rather refreshing. Hopefully hololens will, like they say, be as simple to develop for as anything else. I want in. The future is Dennou Coil, and that future is apparently actually on its way.
-
Or just wait for 10, which <del>will have</del><ins>has</ins>them <ins>now</ins>.
Sweet! I'll have to try it out.

Ah; I was confused why they announced "after the superbowl" but then I saw this. That explains things.

Apparently, there's either a new build available, or an update available that gives you a new build. I guess I'll find out tomorrow at work.
-
It goes on the bottom.
I have mine on the bottom on one monitor and on the left on the other. The vertical task bar handles lots of open windows much better than a horizontal taskbar.
-
Windows 7 only has the task bar on 1 monitor without installing silly 3rd party software.
17 entries on the task bar (more than 17 windows but grouped by app) still only takes up 2/3 of the taskbar. It is a 1080p display though.

Yes, Windows has been pretty dumb about this sort of thing.

Oh, fuck, grouped task bar. I hate that. And fucking IE, it makes separate things for each goddamned tab. Ugh...I hate that shit.
Are you just showing icons in the taskbar? Awful.
-
And fucking IE, it makes separate things for each goddamned tab.
Can you not turn that off here?
-
grouped task bar. I hate that
I like it over having 1 per email, IM conversation etc.
And fucking IE, it makes separate things for each goddamned tab
Can be turned off IIRC. Doesn't bother me though.
Are you just showing icons in the taskbar? Awful.
Yes. I know what the icons are, and clicking to 'expand' the group shows the text for each tab/window.
Fits a lot more on it.
-
-
-
I don't know about boomzilla, but I am. ;-)
(More seriously, I also hate the grouping. I use it on "low res" displays (1080p is borderline): at reasonable resolutions or two monitors, I much prefer making the taskbar double-height and not grouping.)
-
Are you just showing icons in the taskbar? Awful.
It's great. I know what the icons mean. I don't need to have the text.
-
-
I have grouped icons only, on the top of the screen! Time to invoke @CodingHorrorBot ?
-
@Onyx Is Doing It Wrong™
-
That's funny, because I have lots of windows open with the same icon, but they have different text because they have different documents and such open.
Sure, you can hover over the group and get the popup thing, but I think it's way better to have that info at your fingertips,.
-

if i had it on one of my landscape monitors i'd disable the grouping, but it's on my portrait monitor due to our billing software freaking the heck out if the app bar thingie isn't on the window with the highest y index pixel
