PLANESHIFT!!!!!!!!!! Title is invalid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Somehow PlaneShift has enough videos that it's a "recommended tag" in YouTube. Huh.
Perhaps it just senses that you wrote two videos and recommended more for you.
-
A normal person when writing a simple app to change a few settings, maybe update a few files, then launch another app would not choose to do so in OpenGL and/or DirectX.
But these are open source master coding experts, and also the combination of:
- All open source cross-platform windowing libraries probably suck-ass and make something like this unreasonably difficult
It could be worse. The launcher could be a Java application.

It could be worse. The launcher could be a Java application.
Not sure you could make that much worse even with Java.
I don't normally watch these videos but after a few mins of this one I reckon I've been missing out.
-
Well, as long as it's unstyled Swing, you're .... wait, no, that would be better than this.
-
You were looking for something cool to buy...
... and you got this?
-
There's an ingame critter that goes by "Kormi"...so that's where the other half of it comes from.
Also -- Blakeyrat got ingame?! I thought he had given up given the OP...

Someone left this comment on part 2:
Adam Kassur 1 day ago
1.) Game is very complex and you might need to read some tutorials and talk to other really nice players for guidance.
2.) Game is open world and you have to discover and learn how to do everything
3.) Game is 400+ Deep Quests, Earn Tria + PP's, Craft/Improve Weapons/Gear/Magic (find players to help you)
4.) Death Realm (you will only be sent there when you are experienced enough, trigger specific quest)
5.) EVERYTHING works in the game. You need to learn how to use buttons correctly.
6.) There are around 5 major cities (specific lineage quests, secret passages, shops, guild entrances)
7.) SKILLS go up when you use them (quest triggered, action specific, some happen when creatures hit you, or what you make or craft or use)
8.) Attribute Skills go up when you have enough tria + PP's and buy levels at trainers) after using them for a short while.
9.) NPC's + Players are shops/traders/craftersPLEASE COME BACK! (By Gemol)
So apparently players of PlaneShift have trouble with typing words also. I guess I did not earn enough PP's.
I'm guessing the game is not as complex as Adam/Gemol says, I think the tutorial was just written by an idiot. And any "complexity" is just working around bugs-- like not being able to give that one dude 3 tria when I have like 50 tria in my inventory, or the game telling me I'm going to the "Death Realm" but apparently you don't until you complete a specific quest.
And even if that was all sorted, the map is still barren and boring, the combat animation is barely this side of non-existent, there's no way to buy pants (that I found in like 2.5 hours of playing), the UI is atrocious, and there is no fun to be had here. No fun at all.
(Oh wait, look at rule 5: EVERYTHING works in the game. So I guess I'm hallucinating the launcher crashing. Or the "give" command not working on the tutorial guy when I tried to hand him my lunch or the-- ok I'm not going to list all the bugs. Apparently being a PlaneShift player involves a hell of a lot of denial.)
I am not coming back.

I am not coming back.
Did you reply to him there linking back here so he would know that?
-
He has his Google+ profile on some dumb privacy setting where he can comment on YouTube videos but nobody can reply to the comment. God knows why Google even has this setting.
You can view his YouTube history though. Big fan of conspiracy theories and videos about gay men being too feminine.
-
He probably has that setting so he can avoid criticism. I don't suppose there a way for you to delete his comment.
-
I can, but I wouldn't.

UNREAL ENGINE WILL SOLVE ALL PROBLEMS

This is the second comment I see on the first video:
storm14k 2 months ago Sounds like somebody just aiming to nit pick at everything. Isn't this an open source game made in folks spare time? That's a lot of work to pull off so yea they aren't going to be able to pay crazy amounts of detail on small stuff. I guess folks that actually write code understand this.
So...is someone here trying to troll @blakeyrat? More than usual, I mean.
-
At least storm14k doesn't claim there are no bugs under a video demonstrating like a dozen bugs.
EDIT: wow I'm behind on these comments:
this game is not high class and is also free so stop saying bad about it. that's also a good game for the year its made in. would you like to play nethack?
The fuck? For the record, no, I would not like to play nethack.
i can read everything, go on an eye exam
Way to miss the point.
Unfortunately, I'm gonna move these videos to the Blakeyrat channel so those comments will be lost. Stupid YouTube.
-
I would not like to play nethack.
Most people grow out of that sort of thing. Indeed, a lot of people grow out of it before discovering that nethack exists. Some people have all the luck…
-
You do not understand.
I do not want to play Nethack because I grew up playing the far superior Mission: Thunderbolt on my Mac.

Knowing obscure stuff is what makes me kewl.
Sadly, that does not always work. Just look at Ben. Knows Lojban. Lojban is obscure. Knowing Lojban does not make him kewl.
-
s/Lojban/Dwarf Fortress/g
also works
-
For all the grief you get about it, Dwarf Fortress is waaaaaay cooler than logjam. Sometimes I wish I were younger and had time to play shit like Dwarf Fortress. It actually sounds like something similar in many ways to the video game that Randy helped make (tried to make?) in Cryptonomicon.
