The e-cigs thread.

Since there are many around here, why don't you share your setup and experiences with liquids, brands, etc.
-
I'm currently using a pair of KangerTech Mini ProTank 3 with 2.2ohm resistances. Batteries are standard ones of 1000-900-600 and I'm thinking about buying a nice battery setup (is it worth it?)
Liquids: an easy one of RYX4 for the morning and a tough one (18mg) for later.
-
I don't smoke. Which is the best type for a newcomer to get started with?
-
Injected heroine of course. You start with the hard stuff and down to smoking.
-
Thank you for your sage advice. I don't know what I'd do without TDWTF members pointing me in the right direction.

TDWTF members pointing me in the right direction.
...... right direction or "right" direction?
there is a difference.

My main setup is currently:
Mod: Sigelei 30W
Clearomiser: Aspire Nautilus
AW 2000mAh 18650 batteries
Custom short drip-tip
1.8 Ohm BVC coils, but the resistance doesn't really matter as the mod has a boost-regulator.e-Liquids I get from Kraken, all of their stuff is amazing but the liquorice 'Ripper' and the raspberry'ish 'Squid Ink' are my favorites. They also promise not to use any ingredients that are known (or suspected) to be problematic for inhalation.
I don't smoke. Which is the best type for a newcomer to get started with?
If you really want to start then a small clearomiser (means it has a liquid storage tank basically) would be best I think. Maybe a Nautilus Mini and any basic 510 battery plus a charger. Any coil above 1.8 Ohms would be reasonable to start with.
Or this kit which has a fancy variable voltage battery: http://www.aspirecig.com/aspire-kit/aspire-kit166.html
You can get liquid with no nicotine content but anything inhaled comes with a risk of granulomas forming in your lungs.
-
I'm thinking about buying a nice battery setup (is it worth it?)
The Sigelei 30W is brilliant after going from a basic battery. No risk of deep-discharging your batteries and the constant wattage means you can go a whole tank without having to adjust anything.
30W is a bit high though, you can fog an entire room out if you can draw hard enough I leave mine around 10-15W depending on the liquid.Edit: It does fit in a jeans pocket with a wallet and I haven't managed to bend it yet by sitting down. Every wit does call me Gandalf when I use it though...

Looking at the pictures & the descriptions, those things are kind of sonic screwdriver-ish. But the descriptions sound like something you'd read on a gun or ham radio forum.
I've only ever seen one person using an e-cig in person. I was stopped next to him at a red light and all of a sudden his car filled up with a cloud of smoke that looked like something from a Cheech & Chong movie.
A lot of stores sell what I assume are prefab non-modifiable units that look a lot more streamlined than that thing--sort of like the difference between Wall-E and EVE. I imagine they probably don't work quite as well somehow.
-
Why is such a simple thing so complicated? People can't use an e-cig without knowing what an ohm is?
Goddamned.
It's a little pocket-sized machine that vaporizes a bit of liquid. This is not a kind of thing that should have accessories.
-
I used to use these, which I preferred as they don't look as daft and they don't involve messing about with mods and accessories and buying liquids online and general faffing.
As a bonus they're sold in a lot of petrol stations so I can buy refills etc. easily while out and about.Have actually gone back to normal cigs for the time being.
E-cigs like the fancy ones mentioned previously turn smoking into an investment/hobby IMO and I was trying to quit so that was the last thing I wanted.
-
I see these all the time since annoying children at the back of the bus who think that acting like a dick in public = being rebellious like to smoke them. Is it really "smoking" if it's only water vapour? Will this become one of those things where people forget where the word comes from?
-
Is it really "smoking" if it's only water vapour?
I'm going to buttume there's a nicotine hit involved, since smokers seem to be switching to them en masse.
Haven't tried it myself, though I did consider it. I only knew about the un-moddable ones though, had no idea there's so much variety. Also, that resistors matter.
-
I'm going to buttume there's a nicotine hit involved
Probably though I do remember reading an article (that I cba to find now) that suggested gradually reducing the amount of nicotine in the liquid as a way of quitting smoking.
-
Yeah, most of the ones I've seen at petrol stations are tiny clearomisers with mechanical batteries. So they hold a small amount of liquid in a resevoir and don't have any regulation between the battery and the heating coil (atomiser) apart from a switch.
The advantage is definitely size, disadvantages are nearly everything else (use time, flavour, throat-hit and repeatability mainly).
I had one that was totally crap and one that was OK, so it's probably more pot-luck at the low-end for getting something reasonable. Why is such a simple thing so complicated? People can't use an e-cig without knowing what an ohm is?
Goddamned.
It's a little pocket-sized machine that vaporizes a bit of liquid. This is not a kind of thing that should have accessories.
You can buy kits that contains everything you need for even the fanciest setups, so if you don't want to learn all the terms you can just buy one of those and be sorted.
There is definitely a huge enthusiast scene who care about those things though.
-

That's what I did when I was smoking rollies. I mixed my own fluid so just gradually took the level down over a few months. It was totally painless unlike when I tried to quid cold-turkey.
-
Why would changing the battery make a difference in "small amount of liquid is vaporized?"
-
Why would changing the battery make a difference in "small amount of liquid is vaporized?"
More power. The low-end batteries can't supply much so going to a monster 18650 battery allows you to draw amps. That allows more vapour (for the people that like making fog clouds) and affects the flavour.
At 13W my smoking doodad needs 3 amps from the battery.
-
Yes, it's something like guns or ham radios. You have modding, youtubers, etc.
You can setup your battery wattage, your burner resistance, mix your own liquids. And lots of experimental stuff.
The ones you get in stores are crap, so if you're serious you have to go for the top of the line stuff... Which doesn't mean spending a lot of money, although some mods cost ~200€
-
Why don't you just hold the button down longer if you need a -- oh nevermind, people are fucking crazy, is the end-result of this conversation.
Is there a single thing in the universe that hasn't been over-complicated to shit?
-
Yeah, most of the ones I've seen at petrol stations are
.. first generation and are crap.
-
It's certainly more elegant than the gum (I had a colleague that used to leave half-chewed wads of the stuff on the tops of things all over his desk for later).
-
Why don't you just hold the button down longer
The first one I had couldn't even make any visable vapour when you exhaled so there is that much difference between the high and low end.
Also it was crap for quitting cigs as you weren't getting much nicotine even if you'd held down the button all night. It's certainly more elegant than the gum (I had a colleague that used to leave half-chewed wads of the stuff on the tops of things all over his desk for later).
I tried the gum and it just burnt my mouth and throat. I was not a fan.
-
I'm going to buttume there's a nicotine hit involved,
Obviously, but again, it's carried on water vapor, not smoke, i.e., burning plants. That can't help but be less bad for you.
-
suggested gradually reducing the amount of nicotine in the liquid as a way of quitting smoking.
Sure, and I bet[1] that works as good as the gum does. Of the handful of people I know who took to the gum to try to quit, all they did was add a second nicotine delivery mechanism.
[1] Heh. Imagine reading that in a stereotypical Irish voice if you want.
-
-
There is definitely a huge enthusiast scene who care about those things though.
Of course! Just from the few posts here, it's obvious that beyond the one-size-fits-all gas station model, there's apparently an entire customizable industry, and I bet no two companies produce compatible models yet, so it's all vendor lock-in, but at the same time, it sounds like something eminently tinker-with-able, so of course guys would love it.
-
That can't help but be less bad for you.
I wonder if anyone has actually tested the outgoing vapour for pathogens? I don't want to get TB or ebola because we've all decided that it's safe to "smoke" around people again...
-
a monster 18650
Another thing I'd never heard of. Damn, they're expensive batteries, although...7cm or so long? You might as well just carry one of these puppies.
-
I wonder if anyone has actually tested the outgoing vapour for pathogens?
Why would it be any worse than the air that person is already exhaling?
-
Is there a single thing in the universe that hasn't been over-complicated to shit?
Let's see... Things I can see from my work desk:Computers. Nope.
Whiteboards. Do scented markers count as overcomplicated? How about getting the bastards clean?
Computers. Nope.
Mechanical pencils. VERY NOPE.
Hot sauce. Given I have six bottles of the stuff, nope.
Company credit card statements. Those are still pretty sane. Regular civilian statements, however, now come with charts and graphs and shit.
Takeout menus. "Design your own sushi roll!" form included.
Cell phone. Nope.
Desk phone: HOW THE HELL DO YOU CONFERENCE SOMEBODY? WHAT ARE THOSE BUTTONS FOR?
Post-it note: Fancy designs, scents, colors, etc.
Legal pad: WTF IT'S NOT EVEN LEGAL SIZED!
USPS "DESIGNING LETTER MAIL" and "DOMESTIC MAIL MANUAL" automated-processing design transparency template (1997 edition): OH SWEET JESUS.
Copy of K&R: C is pretty fucking overly complicated.
Copy of Adobe PostScript Language Reference Manual: VERY overcomplicated.
Copy of How To Program Java with Visual J++: Because Java wasn't complicated enough.
Ruler: Has inches, points, picas, fractional-to-decimal conversion chart, halftone screens and color saturation guide.
Fan: Has a TURBO button...
Boxed copy of Quark XPress: .....
Keyboards: 5 of them. 5 different layouts.Ah. Here we go. Something uncomplicated!
A plastic fork!
-
Why would it be any worse than the air that person is already exhaling?
Maybe because now it's full of steam as well? Extra surface for virii/bacteria, maybe.
-
Something uncomplicated!A plastic fork!
Look at the ribs on the underside providing structural integrity. That's probably engineered via trial and error.
-
If a guy's breathing out steam, he's got worse problems than a virus. Assuming you actually meant vapor...
I... guess? Sure, it's something that should be studied, but if the guy sneezes he's going to send a million times the particles a million times farther, so I don't see how the e-cig would be that big a deal in comparison.
-
I bet no two companies produce compatible models yet, so it's all vendor lock-in
Actually it's not as bad as you might expect. The connection between atomising bits and battery bits is nearly always standard. The drip-tips have a couple of standard sizes with one predominant standard.
The batteries are standardised too, it's mostly the atomiser coils themselves that are specific. The cheap things seem to be all-in-one lumps though.
-
If a guy's breathing out steam, he's got worse problems than a virus
Furthermore, I'm pretty sure steam would work a number on most viruses.
-
Granted sneezing on people is probably worse but bacteria and viruses travel in water droplets such as the mist being exhaled. Sneezing on people intentionally isn't a thing (yet - that I know of) but I hadn't noticed that people using e-cigs pay much attention to where their vapour goes.
-
but I hadn't noticed that people using e-cigs pay much attention to where their vapour goes.
I have! Directly into their parole officer's face in the (nonsmoking - I'm fairly certain half the e-smokers I've ever seen do it because they haven't yet been banned from doing it in nonsmoking places) bar!
-
Directly into their parole officer's face
They are good for making a spectacular cloud when one needs it.
-
Personally, when I need an obnoxious smoke cloud, I use a cigar.
-
That's one thing I'm not giving up, they are an occasional treat anyway. Humidor is currently empty though as I smoked the last Partagas No.4 last weekend. Will have to get myself some Christmas presents I think.
-
Yep. Strictly a 'fuck the world' level vacation treat. Only suitable for the deepest, darkest moments of self-loathing, the highest peaks of action star heroism and the most joyous moments of celebration. I get through about 1 of each in a year.
-
so I don't see how the e-cig would be that big a deal in comparison.

Many cities have lumped e-cigs in with conventional cigarettes on their smoking bans. It is becoming a thing. Before long, nicotine will be listed as a narcotic and only available with prescription.
-

You've seen the pot-leaf shaped writing on the wall, right?
-
Touché.
-
We were talking about it spreading viruses/disease in the exhaled vapor.
-
You must be new here. Topics sometimes drift, Atwood's desires notwithstanding.
-
The principle used by e-cigs is the same as the one used by fog machines. The base of the liquids is glycol. In the same way as those used in parties, the liquid is mixed with some scent (in general, strawberries) and in the case of e-cigs, the liquid is mixed with different scents, like tobacco, although you can find them in chocolate, mint, fruits, etc. Optionally, this liquid also contains different levels of nicotine (which is poisonous but not a known cancer agent).
Anyway, the white sock test is a good example of the difference between smoking and e-cigs. Inhale and while exhaling the smoke/vapor, put a white cloth in your mouth so the air is filtered.
Also, I don't see how something which is burnt to at least 100C can carry any virus or bacteria.
