JRE Installer does dumb shit? You can fix that for us right?
-
Everyone here knows the JRE installer on Windows is
11FILE_NOT_FOUND kinds of dumb.Did You Know™ the installer is so stupid that instead of actually using MSI and versioning files it, just nukes the JRE home and re-installs files? That wonderful documentation that tells you how to setup deployment properties to manage behavior system (JRE) wide? Can't do it per-JRE. That shit is all or nothing. Same goes with enabling unlimited strength cryptography. You'll use AES-128 and LIKE IT!
The REALLY fucked up part is the idiotic behavior goes back to at least 2009, on Solaris systems of all things.
Apparently the deployment developer(s?) of Java don't/didn't just hate Windows, they hated Solaris too.

Hanlon's razor.

Yep. I mentioned this last week. In fact, it's even worse, because if you had installed the JRE somewhere else previously, after it wipes the last install, it will forget about your custom location and reinstall it in c:\program files. My SSD doesn't appreciate that.

No.
Except, possibly, themselves?
You're anglin' for a flaggin', buddy. Perhaps you need to get liquored up.

JRE is just a stopgap hack. Any minute now we'll have CPU manufacturers clamoring to build CPUs that run Java bytecode natively!

Then Minecraft might run efficiently(ish)?

Jeez, you're full of cheer, aren't you?
Have you played Minecraft? Ask yourself how it can bring a system that can shrug off Skyrim to its knees.

I haven't played Minecraft in several years. I did what I wanted to do, and moved on.
However... I don't need to ask. We have the other thread for this

And now, conveniently, this one!
It's not topic drift so much as topic veer.

Cellphones have had those for ages. Pretty sure there was one back in my Motorola RAZR v.3.

Yeah, but not much clamoring about it.

Hey I had like a Batman game on that thing. And I think Tetris. It was like a somehow-even-shittier Game Gear.

What about a Master System?

Didn't run Java. True FactTM

I didn't say it was. Just wanted to give you the answer you (probably) weren't looking for, for fun.
-
Of course, the answer as any fule kno is 42.

...any fule kno...
I seriously had to look at that for a good minute before I decided you are literary-trolling those of us who speak 'Murican. However, I seem to randomly bust out spellings that make sense 1700 miles east from me so maybe just me.

Just in case, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Molesworth
"Nigel's spelling is extremely uneven, a feature found endearing by fans. The phrase "as any fule kno",[2] appended to many of Nigel's pronouncements, has achieved fame beyond its author and can sometimes be seen in the mainstream British press (usually in a satirical context; the phrase often appears in Private Eye). "
[1] the [2] was a Wikipedian footnote.

Nope, FrostCat is quite right as to the origin of that phrase.

I actually had heard the phrase before, but thought it was American in origin. Apparently it's seeped into some corner of American culture, perhaps in a manner not unlike a slime mold moving over a grate.
Edit: well, that sentence kind of got away from me.

My only response to this revelation is to go make some fish sticks and freedom fries. Cause 'Murica.

I'm installing the latest JRE. It turns out that it doesn't say which version it is. If you forget for a moment, you have to go back to the beginning screen where the installer suggests c:\program files or c:\program files (x86) to figure out which installer you're running.
Would it have killed someone to put "x86" or "64-bit" or something in the window title? As it is, you have to remember the installer's file name--which claims to be a .COM instead of a .EXE for some reason--or use Task Manager to figure it out. Also, look at this:
D:\apps\Java64>jre8\bin\java -version
java version "1.8.0_25"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_25-b18)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.25-b02, mixed mode)D:\apps\Java64>cd ..\Java32
D:\apps\Java32>jre8\bin\java -version
java version "1.8.0_25"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_25-b18)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 25.25-b02, mixed mode, sharing)Not the biggest of WTFs but a bit silly.
