Closed Poll: Do you have Discourse Syndrome
-
I am absolutely certain that if @sam were to implement it, we would rise to the challenge FOR SCIENCE!
-
Do you really think we might pull it off? I mean, The Official "Likes" Thread only has 1299 right now...
And it runs "Like" scripts. And I managed to make a limited-use signature script. Do you seriously think someone wouldn't make a posting script if he set his mind to it?
Filed under: It's unit testing... kinda
-
Yeah, you're right... but even without, it would actually be the same, all we would have to do is write very short posts.
Filed under: And then we detect Discourse's "MAX_POST_PER_USER_PER_DAY" limit.
-
I've never liked the up/down arrows in the progress bar. You'd think that the separate arrows would do separate things, but it's really just one icon.
I'd rather have something like this:
-
And then we lobby for it to be changed in this installation FOR SCIENCE!

FOR SCIENCE!!!

we actually went back and forth on this cc @awesomerobot I get both arguments.
-
I made a post script to spam the league of legends forums (in a single topic, to prove a point, run from a NAS web server) - It could probably be repurposed here.
-
@sam: the mood seems to be in favour of giving it a try. Could you post here or in "The Official "Likes" Thread" once you've implemented "6666 of 6666"?
-
I'd like to see what the argument for having both is.

I'd like to see what the argument for having both is.
I'd like to see the argument against.
-
I'd assume the argument for having in the progress bar is because you can go up and down from where you are.
I'd assume the argument for having what amounts to a stylised is simply to UI-hint that it's something to be expanded up from the progress bar with extra goodies, in the same way we typically might have or similar to indicate a drop-down which is ultimately the same thing: an extension of related options from where you are currently waving your rodent pointer.
-
Except, once you reach the top or bottom of a topic, you still get the , even though you can only travel in one direction.
I think you're right on with the argument for , and since that is a common UI standard, users (should) know what it means. I'd say, go with the single arrow.
-
Well, I can see the argument in favour of simply because you can always go somewhere in the topic when there's at least two posts (unless they're short posts but that's an edge case)
On the one hand, it could transmute from when you're at the top of the topic, to when you're mid-way through the topic, to when you're at the bottom to give you that contextual meaning.
On the other hand, the logic of does help.
-
I can see both sides, but I think that the training users have already received in regards to dropdown lists weighs heavily in favor of the option.
-
I'm inclined to agree. But while I agree, it's not without recognition that isn't entirely bad and does suffice, but that or similar is probably better in this case.
-

Hmmm. The image was a lot smaller before system saved a local version.
-
What format was it originally?
-
width: 100px
-
So you uploaded a 500px square image, resized with CSS to be 100px and system replaced it with the 500px image without honouring the CSS override. I don't know whether I approve of this behaviour or not.
-
I think that overrides should be honored. It should be possible for DC to parse and only replace the src attribute.
-
That's what I mean. I don't know if I approve or not - or whether it should even do something interesting like recognising a size and resize the image to that size while you're doing it (but only if the size given is smaller than the image's natural dimensions)
-
The problem is that DC appears to be replacing the entire img element, when it only needs to replace the src attribute of said tag. It could be overriding a useful alt, or additional styling (like maybe a border). Ultimately, DC usually specifies the size when the image is first posted, and that shouldn't change when the image is downloaded to DC's local system. All that should change is the URL, and most of the time, that won't cause problems, since most users (excluding TDWTF) won't manually edit the img tag anyway.
-
Hmm. I'm not sure I agree, but I'm not sure I don't. I dunno.
-

Nope, I linked to a pic I found on Google Images and slapped a width attribute on it, actually.

"uploaded" "hot-linked" Pah, isn't that like pedantry of the dickweedish variety?

Not in the least.

When the feature was first implemented as I actually thought the pager was just half broken and I couldn't go to the bottom of the page.
As @Arantor mentioned, the intention for is to show "you can go up or down from here" versus "jump to top" ( provides zero context for the ability to move down the page, so as a new user I would assume it's a non-existent feature) .
I get the idea of "this arrow indicates this is a pull up menu" but when it's place in relation to page location - it feels more like the super traditional "back to top"
So I guess my issue is, if I'm a new user and I want to get to the last post... how do I know that this feature exists? The purpose of the pager becomes incredibly obvious when expanded, but keeping in mind that I'm trying to navigate to the bottom of the page... would I be more likely to click or
-
I've come up with an even better image for it:
-
Perfect! Now how do we build such a thing?
-
maybe if it's more obvious as a button it becomes "oh shit, like an elevator" ?
-
-
I was thinking more of "Love In An Elevator"

My history is now filled with junk because of Discourse.
It got so bad that I created an account just to note that.

Not logged in visitors (a.k.a. lurkers) default to that plugin being off, so they get spammed.
-
There's a user option in your profile to minimize that issue.
-
Oh, that's nice, actually.
I guess I'll keep this account for browsing the forums, then.
-
And here we have @created_just_to_disl ike_this using the account they created to disl ike_this to l ike_this.
-
Surely, if CamelCase had been used, there would have been sufficient characters?
-
Let's see... three underscores... replace that with seven letters...
Maybe?
-
I was going for replacing the three underscores with the remaining letters of 'dislike' and assuming the context was otherwise carried through the username ;)

That's post 1205 out of how many?
Funny thing is, if I remember correctly it isn't post 1205 out of X.
It's post-with-id-1205 in this thread of X posts.
Turns out I am wrong. It now looks as if the X in X of Y is indeed the index of the post in the current set of posts the thread comprises. So the only way to find out a post's id is to click on "reply".
-
The share dialog also uses absolute numbers:
-
Only 20 posts? I know that I'm most likely less than a minute from finishing the thread. But if I'm in the middle of a 200+ post thread, I don't know if I'm near the beginning or end while I'm skimming through it, not until I completely remove my vision from what I was focused on.
Ok, granted.
As an interesting support point for you: I've used stylish to make the baneling bar a fat dark blue instead of hardly visible light green.
The Where Am I? problem is a real one.
-
You do know what will happen once you do it, don't you?
Oh dear lord almighty
Let's do it
-
-
Let's do it
Effort already under way with head start of 1313 posts.@sam: how long until we will see 6666 of 6666?

Feature request: Somehow fit , , , and into this UI...
So the only way to find out a post's id is to click on "reply".
Hovering over the timestamp should give you the URL in your statusbar/whatever:
1158 is the topic id, 114 is the post id.
