Let's find out if it can be worked around like every other abuse of this forum... HTML MAGIX
Doesn't work. But will it let me have my URL sanitized dashes?

Take that, punks.

Try with weird unicode characters

The url is irrelevant anyway, the topic id is in the URL to make it unique. What it really means is that there is no reason why titles can't be re-used other than to be annoying.
-
Wrong. You can use the title only. But it takes me to http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/title-has-already-been-used/1198

That's funny. Just cleared the numbers from this URL, and you're correct, it took me to the other topic instead. Ha!

Yeah. But my point stands: if they allow dashes in title names, which means the base URL is NOT unique (even though the topic's final url with the id is still unique), then there is no reason to force unique title names. At least no reason anyone has pointed out yet. The only reason I've seen given is the one about the URLs.
ninja edit - quoted wrong person before.

True. I did note it behaves weirdly before, just didn't think about how you could abuse it. I guess I know now.
-
Hard to abuse in a way that hurts anyone but yourself, since the link goes to the first one, so you have to have pre-emptively hijacked someone else.
Or re-use old topic names with dashes subsituted for spaces to prevent short-URL linking... which also seems like a dumb type of abuse.
Doubt they'd fix this particular issue, it's not worth the time and effort.

I think this is probably by design, and the solution is to allow duplicates in the config.

So let it be written, so let it be done!
