How does one delete a private message?
-
How do I delete the paula bean message, or at minimum, how do I make the message count number go away? I keep thinking I have 1 new message, when it's really just 'You have 1 message, and we're going to show you, forever, because we're assholes'
@codinghorror, @sam, @pjh, @ISummonThee
-
Does muting it make it go away?
-
Nope.
-
Depends on what the definition of "mute" is....
-
Well, mute doesn't delete it, and mute doesn't remove the (1) from my 'All' messages tab, so... it doesn't fit either of my desired results.
-
I was aiming more for the second one. Which, you would think that mute would do. I guess that you're stuck with it.
-
Better to flag it for mod attention (PMs are just topics not everyone can see, same rules apply..), then a mod can delete it.
-
Are you shitting me?
Everything is a topic? That's what WordPress does and it's really not one of WP's better tactics.
-
The number next to "All" should be the unread messages, and then greenbox the total number in your inbox!

You can even invite other people. From the instance when me and PJH were trying to figure out how to fix a mistyped email when registering:
Also, messages are clearly referred to as posts.
I don't think we ever got a proper response to that meta thread either. I think you bastards (me included) mention-bombed Jeff too much.
-
I have no problem with the whole invitation aspect; other sane systems do that. I'm having difficulty with the fact that PMs are inherently bastardised topics. Presumably any other add-ons that do anything similar (e.g. a bug tracker) would be expected to similarly bastardise topics.
-

I don't mind it either really. I just find it to be a weird way of doing it. I guess I think about PMs as emails and expect something like "CC", not "invite".
And I guess invite might even be better since you don't have to quote everything when CCing if the discussion was going on for a while. It's just counter intuitive to me on the first glance.
-
I'm ok with 'Every private message is a topic post'
I'm not ok with not being able to delete it, or get it off of my recent messages.
-
If you did delete a PM, you would be deleting the topic for both recipients. So if you deleted "your" PM talking to @Arantor it would also disappear from his inbox as well.
Does not matter in this case since system user is not a real user.
-
Because maintaining a flag to 'delete' the topic from a user has never been done before.
Just remove my name from whatever table you use to invite people to the topic.
DONE!
-
What is the sound of one hand clapping?
-
It's usually a crunching sound, when they get punched in the face.
But really. Why can you add people to topics, but not remove them, or hide the new post indicator? What legitimate reason do you have to showing me
All (1)
ALL THE TIME

Thank you for hurting my eyes with a blurred image that my eyes are trying desperately, in vain, to focus on.
-
Flag it for removal

A PM being a topic doesn't really bother me. It seems unnecessary to reinvent something simple and make it complicated, but that's the way Discourse rolls, so fine.
Requiring a moderator to delete a PM is completely daft though - it's a Private Message - maybe I don't want a moderator to see it, but don't want to keep it either.Filed Under: Deletion is a barrier to reading

Sorry let me fix that for you guys

That actually hurts less. Not by a lot, but less. It's still a dickish thing to do.
@the_dragon, you should probably find @codinghorror and eat him for dinner.
-
I regret that I have but one like to give for this post.
-
Why would you want to give @the_dragon an upset stomach?
-
Unfortunately, I am otherwise occupied guarding @presidentsdaughter. Perhaps you could bring @codinghorror to me?
-
Because @the_dragon was threatening to eat @Arantor first, but an upset stomach on the eater's part can help protect from that.
-
I adblocked these images, went to check the user profile for @the_dragon and when I came back these images were un-adblocked. WHAT MAGIC IS THIS?!
-
Presumably in the interim, the system has gone and grabbed the images and updated the posts with the now-attachments?
-
For fucks sake.

My glasses! Zhey do nothing!

+1, saved me from typing

I adblocked these images, ... these images were un-adblocked.
Don't you know that adblocking is evil, a crime against humanity on a par with genocide?
-
Adicide is a crime now?
-
Some
peopleposters here seem to think so.
-
Sure, adblocking might be evil, but like what we frequently do on these forums, I've shanghai'd it and abuse it to block unwanted / nsfw images that pop up while browsing these forums at work.

Is it time for that discussion again? We got @boomzilla, but I'm not sure about @flabdablet. And with no @morbiuswilters or @Lorne_Kates either...
-
I'm not Morbs or Lorne but I like to think I'm not giving Jeff a free ride about issues.

Poor @blakeyrat, forgotten already.

I miss Blakey, he was entertaining.
Not sure what happened with Morbs, I think he's just having a normal break.

He's still lurking regularly. We just have to do something (even if that something is waiting) to get him to start posting again.

He was kind of upset, but I didn't get the impression he was rage quitting. However, he hasn't even logged in for two weeks.
