...aand I lost.
I've made a rook-y mistake.

I've never had the patience for chess. My dad taught me the rules when I was a kid.
My daughter's school starts teaching chess in kindergarten. One of the reasons I chose it.
Because you're a glutton for punishment?
I don't follow.

You're probably going to end up having to play chess with your daughter once she learns how in school. Given that you seem to hate chess, that would make you a glutton for punishment.

I didn't say I hated it. Plus when playing a 7 year old I don't need to think that far ahead. And I certainly would rather play chess than dolls.
She's more interested in TKD than chess. She's in the TKD club and won a (not a participation) medal for best form.
They started TKD in kindergarten too. I liked the school because they introduce the kids to diverse activities.

I assume you mean Taekwando. I call it TKD too, but my coworkers look at me funny.

Yeah, because I never can remember how to spell it. I would have preferred judo, but it will do.

Continuing the discussion from 🎒 TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):
TIL you can't actually escape check by castling. I've been playing chess on-and-off for like 15 years, and yet it never came up until today, and even then not during the actual play, but when I was keying the game in for analysis in Chessmaster.
Also, I need a chess clock. My girlfriend plays fine, but she's the slowest thinker ever.
How long are your games taking? The standard time control is 90 minutes per side or 3+ hours total.
FWIW: I play 5 minute speed games to hone my skills. [Used to play against the "hustlers" at Union Square in NYC. Typically won 2-5 but about 40% were 3-5.... so I held my own]

@HardwareGeek said in Nope, you city it:
Are Greeks trustworthy?
Depends. Are they giving you a big wooden horse?
Also, be wary if your opponent appears to be giving you a free Bishop.

I'm no expert but I think that's a lot better than Brillant.

@boomzilla looks to me like Black has to take the Queen immediately (g7xf6), leaving it open for White’s rook (e4-g4+), for which Black’s only counter is to move the king (g8-h8), leaving the White’s bishop to seal the deal (e5xf6#)
But I wasn’t ever particularly good at chess so maybe there was some elaborate way out for Black that didn’t rely on White doing something boneheaded here.

Black could take the bishop with his queen to avoid the mate in 2. But he’s still going to be a lot worse off, being up a rook and down a queen instead of up a rook and down a bishop.
-
@Arantor I think black's best move is to take the bishop with his queen. But that probably only draws things out.
-
I'm no expert either, but it looks to me like Black's best move is to yell "Fire!" and flip the board.

You're just more efficient, getting to a resolution quickly instead of thrashing on the vine for a while to achieve the same result

I had heard that you had 90 minutes for the first 40 moves.
