Towards the end I made a completely unnecessary mistake

and missed there ought to be two Es in EAGER (known since DENSE and PENCE), so instead I guessed WAGER. This was just before I correctly guessed BRAWN just to its left which would have told me there was no W.

Before that, _AVEL was neither GAVEL nor NAVEL, but RAVEL. And SIL_Y was not SILKY. I awaited until knowing it was not an L in there to correctly guess SILTY.

I also got confused by MAYAN for the longest time, but at least I got that one right.

It was full of booby traps. Lots of potential off-by-ones. I think I managed to avoid all of them. I just had a bad start, plus that mistake I mentioned above; which was a calculated risk anyway.
