Having finished the first chapter in a mere nine months, he is reportedly on track to finish the book shortly before dying. He is, however, expected to have an above-average lifespan due to his excellent sleeping habits.

@Applied-Mediocrity I am in this post, and, uh, ...

@DogsB what is all of these different "the shadow" books?

Just a series of pulp novels that I enjoy reading. They’re hammy as hell but I love them.

All the Seas of the World, by Guy Gavriel Kay.
I like how it is set in not a period of history I know something about but not hugely much. The late medieval period had a lot going on that foreshadowed what would happen later. Some magic, but not much.

So is it set in a period you do know hugely much about, or one you know nothing about?Your following sentence clarified that you know more than nothing about, thus leaving just the one possibility.

This new translation is really great.I’m going to try to read that this month. It only occurred to me recently that there is an element of ridiculousness about most of the elder gods that I might try to document.
-
@jinpa I have a fragmentary knowledge of medieval history, not an integrated whole model (I'm better and more systematically read about things after the French Revolution). I thus enjoy retellings set in that period (approximately) that help to piece together how the bits I know about could have interacted.

The whole obsessing over elder gods is the work of past-lovecraft dumb impostors, like Darleth. Lovecraft was about fear of the unknown, indiscoverability of true reality and insignificance of humanity in universe - elder gods were just an occasional tool for this.

I concur. Its a pity the elder gods are what he’ll be most known for. Another one of those authors that will be remembered for whats in the popular culture zeitgist and not what he was best at.
