Disclaimer: I use the word myself times, and I don't have a problem with the word being used for genuinely retarded people, but it's often tossed around as a slur.
Not to mention that the word has uses outside of talking about people, such as free-fall bombs that have pop-out airbrakes to slow them so they don't hit the ground directly under the plane...
