WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else

@Applied-Mediocrity That makes me wonder: why not Windows Phone apps? Oh, wait, that’s probably because they managed to kill off the viability of that ages ago already.
Also because they actually killed off Windows Phone.
-
@loopback0 That’s what I was saying. But I suppose it was inevitable, what with having to keep supporting it for the one remaining satisfied customer.

Considering the time and money they put into Xbox I still don't understand why they didn't keep at it. Although Microsoft has developed an uncanny knack for moving into high profit areas that don't draw regulatory oversight these days. Well... apart from growth in their ad division and fucking around with chromium.

You know how both Windows XP and Windows 7 had an exponential complexity of update times relative to number of updates ever released, so by the end of their lifecycles it took hours just to refresh list of available updates?
What if, contrary to MS's claims, it still wasn't fixed in Windows 10 and even though it was supposed to be "the last Windows" and technically it could have been that without a problem, they're forced to supersede it anyway because after 6 years they're dangerously close to the rapidly growing part of exponential curve and the only way to prevent that is starting with clean sheet yet again?

Yes, that's true, and it's another one of the stupid, retarded things that never should have been a problem in the first place.
I haven't used Windows Update in years. I can go to Microsoft Update Catalog, search for whatever version of Windows I'm running, sort the results by date and download the newest cumulative update.
If I try to install something that I already have, or that doesn't apply to my version of Windows, it tells me. Updating Windows - any version - takes a few minutes, not hours.
An automated version of this should have been built into Windows and it should be how Windows Update works. Not the clusterfuck that we currently have.
Speaking of Microsoft Update Catalog, apparently Windows is a lot older than I thought.

Huh. It would appear that Elephant-in-the-room installed on a same-config VM (8 GB/2 CPUs) quite a bit faster than 10-nic

@DogsB Ah yes, no time for distractions while using vim, as remembering all the key combos takes all your concentration.
Id' like to see you use an editor where you don't remember shit. Not even menu or button positions, because they probably use at least as much EEPROM space in your wetware as a key combo

How many of those are there, really? That's why.

Now that makes me wonder. I have a non-cloud/non-subscription office version for Android (thanks Samsung, I guess?). Can I use that one under Windows 11? As much as Office sucks regardless, cloud and/or subscription versions suck even more.

Also, Engadget claims this will work on AMD processors, but I'm unable to find any article from AMD stating they're working on XPU that is required by this feature.
Not sure if it's fake or not.

XPU
Let me update my list. We have
- GPU : general processing unit
- CPU: co-processing unit
- FPU: forsaken processing unit
- SPU: scrappy processing unit
- APU: another processing unit
- XPU: ??? (extraneous processing unit?)
Anything I missed?

@cvi
eXtreme processing unit ... for those extreme number crunches
-
@Luhmann ... I'll stick to my interpretation.

@cvi said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

I hope this clears it up
But what is an XPU? It’s not a new processor or product, but a portfolio of architectures (CPU, GPU, FPGA and other accelerators)

Since XPU is mix and match of chips that performs anything packed into the CPU, I don't think there is anything missed.
Btw, here's a list of <something>PU.

Just saw that you can signup for the Store preview - I'm interested as it would be convenient to publish my MSI there.
Get half way into the registration

Welp. I'm fucked. Individuals need not apply.Edit: On the main page, they have the "Was this page useful" at the bottom. I actually said No, and filled out a response about the above. Don't really expect anything from it, but made me feel better!

@Nagesh You already can. Sort of. The leaked build eagerly awaits to call home to gauge the world's interest about it.
Although there's really nothing worth playing with. The new Taskbar is ridiculous, the new Start bugs out a lot (and is also ridiculous), the new Win32 skin is fugly, the Modern counterpart hasn't changed it any way, transparency effects either aren't enabled yet or require something better than my old VirtualBox 5.x anymore. And, finally, they haven't even replaced all Windows 10 strings with 11 yet.
-
@Gąska They fixed the exponential complexity problem pretty simply starting in 10: every computer gets every patch, no exceptions. Instead of having to calculate a giant matrix of satisfied and unsatisfied dependencies and supersedences and other stuff, the only thing they care about is when was the last installed patch, so it can install every patch from then forward.
Which means you can't opt-out of breaks-your-world patches anymore, because that stops the whole train.

That’s why Linux package managers all start doing exponential shit when you don’t install certain updates. Oh wait, they’re not retarded.
(Not saying you’re wrong. It’s just amazing they couldn’t fix this any other way.)

The good news is that the physical module will be optional on most systems, thanks to all modern Intel and AMD CPUs featuring a firmware-based TPM that operates inside the chips' trusted execution environment. If you have a motherboard that supports CPU-based TPM, you can turn it on via the UEFI/BIOS.
Note, however, that the firmware-based TPM may not work with things like BitLocker. I speak from the experience of having to use the BitLocker recovery key every single morning when I worked at a particular client that mandated BitLocker, until my employer got me a different (older, not as nice) laptop with a real TPM module.

I only need to enter that when I boot Windows. Since I only do that once a month (required by IT or our Windows install gets bricked), the ubuntu side has invariably updated something that makes Windows complain.
-
Windows Millennial Edition:
- Attempting to open any legacy 32-bit application plays the "ok boomer.wav" sound,
- The mouse will only move leftwards, never to the right,
- in dialog boxes, the "Cancel" button is three times the size of the "OK" one.

In theory Windows tries to do this first, and after the latest cum update it then tries to find the next ones after that. This in an attempt to "reset" that exponential problem thingy so it only happens until the next cum update, which might be a "feature update" that really-really resets it.

I think you're right. Some corner of my brain remembered™ Pu->Np, but as it's 239Np that's obviously bullshit.
Edit: looked it up, it's just the other way round, Np->Pu
