@julianlam A counterpoint, from a Microsoft employee, is that IE is a "compatibility solution" and you shouldn't feel pressured to keep supporting it, especially as newer web features come out that don't (and eventually will never) have options to shim support for in IE.
Microsoft will continue to support Internet Explorer so you can "use IE for the sites that need it" but not everywhere else. IE is being kept around so you still have an option with older sites that haven't or can't upgrade, but not newer sites that are welcome to not bother supporting IE in favor of all other modern browsers.

Yeah but you're in no shape for that. You have an untested palace of ideation that is going to heavily distort your mentation for, ever, at this rate. You need to do a few years of C.

No, no. For this to work for me, I need you to identify as a woman.

Not. For some time now I clearly see that the enslavement of a thinking free person is taking place. I do not like it.

@tania_v a collective social organism is, and has generally been, antithetical to the individual freethinker. as the psychotic apes we are, we have of course identified this conflict and given some thought to it, which has, of course, been discarded and is now largely alluded to vs given actual examination.
From time to time, someone will stumble upon this from first principles and fling shit everywhere. We call this going apeshit, iirc.

@tania_v I'm glad you managed to get hold of people you were looking for, but for the next time (there's always a next time as long as you're in IT), maybe you could consider reading this. Apologies in advance if it sounds arrogant.
I do share your concerns regarding the accessibility, the update treadmill and increased resource usage of web technologies. I even design my own stuff so that it works with old software (case in point: one of our lab machines runs Windows 2003 Server because our unique hardware doesn't work with anything newer, so now the web service has to work well on unsupported Firefox 52 ESR), but overall, I think we've lost this battle already.

For some reason, many people think that for big questions you need to have a lot of knowledge or a big head. I think that it is not so. Because all the big questions are simple. Let's take an example of the question - what is homo sapiens?
On the first day we say mind! Meaning the ability to predict, analyze, plan, calculate ...
On the second day, we listen to ourselves, remember our acquaintances, whom cannot predict, analyze, plan, calculate and we say that yes, this is the mind, but we mean consciousness, self-awareness.
On the third day, we meet julianlam and tell ourselves that we must also add empathy.
That's it: the essence of homo sapiens is the ability for consciousness, self-awareness and empathy.
We get almost the same conclusion, which has been for many years: homo sapiens is an animal that knows that the time will come and it will die. But we made these conclusions ourselves, with our own head, we understand why it is so, we can move on.
-
@aitap You know, it's not hard to write a system that's supported by virtually any browser, past, present and future. All you need is this one easy trick. (Though if you want to buy my book on the subject, that's also appreciated.)
It's simple, really:
Don't use any JavaScript.
Really. That's it. I've written several interfaces for configuring machinery, in plain HTML, vomited out by C code. Because the cheapest maintenance interface now is apparently an ESP8266 in AP mode.
It's surprisingly easy to write user-friendly forms with HTML5, if you don't care about some details not working on the most ancient of browsers. But any machine running those won't have WiFi either, so...

Yes, we can safely move on. For example, we can argue that very soon we will be living with robots.
Because we cannot exist outside the network of those like us. And if we are like those who show consciousness, self-awareness, sympathy - then this is enough for us. Modeling these things is very simple, very simple indeed! - you do not seriously discuss Kant's works with your loved ones! - you can live your whole life happily with a person with whom you only talk about the weather, politics, stars, other people ...
And if your robot worries and cries, it will be very difficult for you to treat it like a car, you simply cannot do it! if you are a human (not a brute)

-
@tania_v said in NodeBB for older browsers:

Yes, we can safely move on. For example, we can argue that it is very dangerous to push consciousness, sympathy into the background. Because then only purely scientific and applied abilities remain, they create a great force, so great that it can close the whole sky.
I think that it was the technological explosion at the beginning of the 20th century that was the cause of the two world wars. If the consciousness of sympathy were strong and could keep technology within the framework of peace, and not war, then we would have entered space in 1944 (we already went into space then, but no one wants to remember Hitler's missiles). And cellular communication would have been there even then. And millions of lives would not be lost.
Not only an explosion is dangerous, gradual changes to the bad side can be even worse than an explosion.
You all saw how an insignificant person clung to computer progress and how much harm he brought! What a dangerous fashion - to complicate all the time without compatibility - he launched!
See how openly and proudly NodeBB discards consciousness and empathy! Already today (!!!) he divides people into reasonable and monkeys, according to his own criteria! And what will happen tomorrow?

@tania_v said in NodeBB for older browsers:

Yes, we can safely move on. For example, we can argue that in fact, all these professional artists (which divorced like cats) we don't need so much.
We want emotions. We receive these emotions from other people. Do they have to be professional artists? (I'm not talking about sadists and other two-legged animals for which any sacrifice is suitable)
On my own, I noticed long ago that the concerts of common people excite me more. I read many similar opinions.
Below I will try to give you two examples.
