Can you even escape from Hades?
-
Charon
will fight you if you try to take his bag of money (that he only sometimes has). It's a hard fight, but completely optional. If you win you get 300 obol coins and a 20% discount on purchases for the rest of your run.
Cerberus
is a summon attack the final boss uses when Extreme Measures is active. He works similarly to Megaera's summon attack.
-
@error Oh, right. I've seen the bag show up a couple times and thought that might be the trigger to fight him, but had forgotten about it since then.
-
Entering Elysium.
Hades: How could you, boy? That hydra had a family!
-
-
I've mentioned it before, but I think the game has a troll engine that makes Patroclus only show up if you haven't used any of your revives yet
-
@hungrier Luckily, money can solve a lot of problems, and Athena was all too happy to help:
In order, those revives are:- Chaos boon from earlier
- Kiss of Styx
- The Athena boon that gives you longer invincibility after reviving, encountered in a tunnel
- The other Athena boon that gives you more HP after reviving, bought from Charon
And with all that:
-
Oh also, @error if you're still trying to figure out Skelly, he gave me what looks like a very strong hint to what he wants

Oh nice. Just Hypnos left now.
-
Ares' greater call, together with Vicious Cycle, is a beast. The highest total damage I've seen from anything, and it makes you invincible. Theseus calls the gods? Who gives a shit, he's dead.
Hades second phase has a life bar? Not for long
-
@hungrier said in Can you even escape from Hades?:
Vicious Cycle
Huh. I think that's one I haven't gotten yet. Along with Ice Wine, which I saw on your frist escape.
-
Went and counted my 50 escape attempts (yay online tool to count unique lines to doublecheck my totals):
2 Tartarus
4 Megaera
2 Barge of Death
4 Asphodel
2 Soul Catcher
1 Tisiphone
6 Elysium
7 Bone Hydra
1 Alecto
10 Champs
1 Bull
1 Styx
7 Redacted
2 EscapedOr to use the less specific term, that's 31 chump deaths.

Last night, on attempt #69 I cleared the game and got the credits. I like the way they justify continuing to do more runs after that. I guess there's still more to the story though, and obviously a lot more to do.

Well, the Olympians still don't know what's going on, right? You're not just going to leave them in the dark, are you?
-
The overall story arc is really kind of wholesome. It's sort of about a troubled family reuniting. Even the "villain" is just a dad doing his best.
-
I thought of another thing that I think might be due to the troll engine: Whenever I get Dionysus' boon that gives you a max life increase when you get nectar, it seems like that's the last nectar I ever see in that run
-

Nectar's fairly uncommon to begin with. I get a nice perk of it being a random power-pom, thanks to the house contractor (I think), so that plus the hp boost is enough, even if it's the last one of the run.
A thing I do with Stubborn Defiance that feels sort of cheaty: if I'm below the amount of hp that it restores after (or late during) an encounter,, I'll purposefully take lethal damage so that I can heal to that threshold. You can use it once per chamber, so you might as well use it as much as you can. It's especially strong with Patroclus' Touch of Styx Dark, which makes it restore an additional 50%, and doesn't consume the effect.
There's also a boon that restores one use of defiance, that makes no sense in the context of stubborn defiance, since it replenishes automatically anyway.
-
@error That's a good point about nectar being uncommon, and I'm probably exacerbating it by using the mirror perk that increases the chance of run-enhancing (as opposed to permanent) rewards.
I also have the pom slice bonus on nectar, as well as the key one that adds another reroll. It's kind of annoying that the key one doesn't work for keys bought from Charon.
In general, the way revives work is a bit unfavourable. Some things can give you bonus revives, like Skelly's keepsake or one of the Chaos boons, but Athena's boons and Patroclus just restore used ones instead. At least Patroclus has a different effect when you're using Stubborn Defiance, but as I've mentioned a couple times, most of the time when I'm using 3x Death Defiance, I only see Patroclus when I haven't used any or only used one, so it feels like a huge waste to take the restore all option.
There's also a few boons that deal with cast stones that become useless if you use the auto-recharging mirror perk
-

Those boons won't show up at all with that mirror perk, just like the boon that makes your cast regen faster requires said perk.
-
@coderpatsy I know I've seen the one that deals damage when the stones dislodge, but that one may still work, I'm not sure. I also think, but not 100%, that the lightning rod one still appears, which is totally useless with that perk.
-
Speaking of dislodging cast stones, here's the troll engine in action again. I took the sword, with Poseidon aspect (special dislodges cast stones from foes), changed to 3 shots instead of regenerating cast, and started my run. So far I've been offered the following cast related boons:
- Dionysus' one that turns it into a festive fog bomb (doesn't get lodged in enemies)
- Demeter's laser crystal one, twice (really good, but also doesn't get lodged)
-
Heat level 13.
-
Another fall to Redacted. But Blown Kiss fucking finally decided it could exist, so I got that out of the way. Also, my 2 door temple streak continues. Does it only do 2 until the epilogue or something?

The third time I got up there, I had to do all but one of them.
-
Was doing something like 700 damage per hit from Poseidon's call. You better believe I was circling like mad.
-
My friend gave me a tip, that duo goes really well with Zeus's call, which is hella convenient since it's one of the prerequisites.
-
Heat level 14, 3 streak.
-
@error Interesting choice of backdrop.
-
-
Since escape #10, I don't think I've done anything particularly interesting, but I've continued my winning streak
-
Not a great run, and I was... not doing well with Redacted. But it's dang right about that close call,E:
Guess they come in pairs. Not sure how I feel about Fiery Presence vs Shadow Presence. I was trying for the chaos boon that requires the former, and got their legendary instead.
-
@coderpatsy said in Can you even escape from Hades?:
it's dang right about that close call,
One run I managed to keep Thanatos from getting a single kill, and it noted that here as "Thanatos Robbed."
I am continually and thoroughly impressed by the attention to detail in this game.
-
I've seen these context-sensitive tags:
- Death Defier - I used and restored a lot of revives in that one
- (Close Call, Though) - mine was 5 HP
- Fountain Finder Award - got a fountain room in every area
- Favored & Envied - I'm not sure, probably something to do with the boons I got?
- The First of Many? - obv
-

I still want to try to win with no boons (which may involve selling them off at a blood fountain, and the pact of punishment). I haven't seen a clear indicator that this will accomplish anything, but there have been nods to how I could never have escaped without the help of Olympus etc. I'd expect the game to at least acknowledge the achievement.
-
Oh yeah, my highest noted temple to date is 3. Still don't know if that is crazy luck and if so why I keep getting it. Wish there was somewhere on the internet (that google would friggin find) that details the exact mechanics of the temple RNG. People have documented game code for less, and I know they read the code for fishing. There is/was code for weights, but a bug throws it out and just goes 50/50. Supergiant was just like "yeah we know, and we like how it turned out."

I got that one too. The wiki has details on the end messages, there are a lot.

Spoilers?
Redacted has unique dialogue for it. Be prepared for pain though, I have seen on the internet people whose last temple gate is a boon, which by definition means fission mailed since at that point there's zero chance of purging.

They should just put a blood fountain next to Charon on top floor. Problem solved.
-
Speaking of purging boons, has it ever been even remotely worth it, other than for challenging yourself? The money you get is pathetically low, unless it's for a boon that you'd never want to get rid of. The only thing I can think of is if it's the last thing you do and you manage to randomly get offered to purge e.g. Exclusive Access or Strong Drink
-
@hungrier There's an achievable for purging a legendary boon (that I wish I had remembered for the time when Poseidon forces his fishing legendary). Other than that, best I can think of is gambling on getting a better boon with the money.
-
@coderpatsy I kind of wish that the game would give me that one again some time, now that I'm consistently getting to the end, rather than when I first got the fishing rod and probably didn't make it very far
-
When life gives you lightning rod, dodge the shit out of everything.

Why would you ever leave the fishing simulator? The fishing simulator is where all games (that have one) touch Heaven. Except for fishing games.

My nadir was when I bought a special fishing controller for Dreamcast.
I used it, too.

Meh run
So Ice Wine is great. Instant cast not limited by barriers with lasting effects (especially with Scintillating Feast and Static Discharge and Cold Fusion)? Yes please.
-
I get all set up with a decent asskicking build (though I was hoping for athena's legendary instead of stubborn roots) and instead I get a skipped final boss and a credits sequence. Ah well.It was fun turning the shield into the bow though.
-
@coderpatsy When I got that one I was on a late losing run so it worked out very well, then I kept up the streak for a few more times. Unfortunately I got pwned after that and broke the streak.
-
@hungrier Hah, I had speculated with my friend that someone out there got lucky that way.
-
First time trying Guan Yu, with Extreme Measures, did not result in a good time
-
@error the NSFW thread is

@topspin None of the interesting bits were visible. It's PG13. No more revealing than a string bikini.

Eh, I’m not complaining (or flagging), I really don’t care. Just thought I’d mention it.
