I strongly suspect I’m one of those people whose general appearance causes them to always get picked for random luggage checks.
So you're Muslim, or a hippie?
Neither, and this was mostly before Muslims became “the enemy” so that wouldn’t have been an issue anyway. It’s just having the kind of face I do and (I suppose) my habit of wearing a camouflage jacket and carrying the stuff I needed on my holiday in a military surplus rucksack that seemed to be enough reason for customs officers to think I was either using or smuggling drugs, or probably both.
Edit: Oh, and there’s the funny bit of an American customs officer becoming highly suspicious of me when she questioned me about how much money I had with me.
Do you have any American money?
Yes, a hundred dollars. (I’d gotten that from a bank back home, which is why I had exactly that amount on me and could state it accurately.)
Just a hundred? Do you have a credit card?
Yes.
How many?
One. (And thinking: WTF kind of question is that? Most people around where I come from have none at all.)
Hmm … starts having a look on her face of “Why would I let a bum like you into our fine country?”
My bank card works in ATMs here.
Okay, you can go through.

no one smuggles drugs in to Mexico.
Well, not from the USA, anyway.

@HardwareGeek He must have never seen any real plastic explosives. Most I've had the displeasure to work with were more of a wheat-dough color. Or fungus-y yellow.
@hungrier For the longest time I had this NiCd battery pack, pulled out of a cordless drill battery, with the cells individually cardboard-covered for isolation. The full pack of 2x2x3 cells, held together with red electrical tape, looked a lot like one of those Hollywood dynamite bundles. It was just begging to be made into an 8-seg LED table clock. Unfortunately, I couldn't source the display parts from anywhere at the time, since this was before my graduation and employment.

I presume he meant that they look the same on the x-ray scanner.

...Another one to add to the list. Right after Lithium-Polymer batteries.
So, how much fudge do they allow you to carry onboard? And does it need to be in your carry-on luggage?
-
@acrow Yes, on the X-ray scanner. And it was in my carry-on. I generally avoid checking anything if I can avoid it, because I hate waiting in baggage claim, so I avoid taking anything that needs to be checked. There's no limit, as far as I know (IIRC, I had a quarter pound), but I do recommend pulling it out so they can check it without having to rummage through your bag.
Edit: I should also probably avoid the word avoid; I just noticed that I used it three times in one sentence.
-
@HardwareGeek That was probably the most irritating thing about my wife: discovering that she likes to check bags.
Which basically means we're pretty good together.

I'm exactly like that when travelling around Europe. When going to the US, I usually check a bag because then I can put a (carefully packed in bubblewrap) bottle of nice whisky in as a present, and getting that at my local supermarket is a hell of a lot cheaper than shopping in the airport duty free.
