@jinpa It's funny how every single physical theory since Einstein has strictly followed the same two rules: no creating energy from nothing and no FTL information transmission.
No matter how weird things get, these two fellows are always there.
The first one is a bit older than Einstein.

Conservation of energy underlies everything we know about the universe. Seriously--most physicists would rather give up locality and causality before conservation of energy.
And no FTL is essential for maintaining causality. Not to mention it naturally falls out of special relativity, which is an obvious (now) outgrowth of some very simple math.

@PleegWat same with Polish and Czech.
You mean despite Polish being closer to Czech than to English, Polish people are generally much more confident speaking English than Czech?
Same with Portuguese and Spanish.
Blame it on TV.

I don’t get why people make opium out of poppy, when you can make the best cake in the world of it instead.

Why not both? ;) Opium is made from the latex from the seed pop of the opium poppy. I'm not sure if harvesting the latex would harm the seed formation.

@jinpa Interesting point. But would you still need it if you got this?

@jinpa I just had to check now. And I found out with Google Maps that the actual driving distance would be a bit over 3500 miles.
That's why you don't use Google Maps to look up actual distances. I used Wolfram|Alpha.
It depends on whether you are using a "straight line" (along a geodesic) definition, or a "following roads" definition. Both are reasonable, but the latter is often much more.

Every time I do the dishes, I notice that dishes washed (or rinsed) with cold water take longer to dry (or more accurately, have more drops of water left on them after letting them to stand for a couple of minutes) than those washed with hot water.
And every time I wonder whether this is because hotter (either the water itself, or the dish being warmed by that water) means more energy available to turn the water into vapour, or because warmer means less surface tension. Or both. Or something else. I don't think it's related to the washing liquid since it also works when just rinsing stuff.
That keeps my mind busy for a few minutes while doing boring stuff...

Presumably there are Polish women (and men) who enjoy anal sex.
These people will then literally have a Pole up their ass.
-
@Zecc not necessarily.

It's amazingly easy to get large numbers of downvotes on Reddit. It's not difficult to do it here, but it's positively easy to do it there. Just write something sensible but that goes against the grain of the subreddit. Unfortunately, you can't see the breakdown between upvotes and downvotes, just the net.

I'm sure you're totally unbiased when it comes to what is "sensible" and what is not.

If I wrote the same kind of thing here, I would not get more than one downvote, if that. People disagree with me, but it's usually not the same kind of mass ooga-booga effect.
Heck, downvotes here are unusual enough that there are people who complain about getting a single one.

I remember being heavily downvoted for saying that guaranteed employment after returning from maternity leave doesn't make sense in a sports team. I felt like I'm the only person in the world who thinks professional athletes should be good.

don't care if they are good or not me, but i do believe that they should not be paid more than educators.
either drop athletes pay, or raise teachers, i care not which, but educators should earn more than people who move balls around, however skillfully, for the entertainment of the crowd.
but apparently that's an unpopular opinion too....
apparently it's a bad thing to be smart but good to move balls around.
-
@Vixen at least they promote healthy lifestyle. Movie actors earn even more for even less.
Also - please don't compare the best of the best of athletes to an average teacher. Compare an average athlete to an average teacher. AFAIK an average professional athlete earns way less than an average teacher (thanks to not being bound by minimum wage).

I've seen the injury rates for handegg, and the long term damage that they cause. I've seen the drug scandals in every sport, the lies about the drug scandals, the lack of anger management, the abhorrent and sexist behavior that...
-breathes in and calms down-
"Healthy Livestyle"
Sure, staying active is a good thing to aspire to, the rest of what they promote.... not so much.

No, it's more that it's easy to measure athletic ability. Public school teachers almost always make more than the average person paying their salary, so they're seldom poor. High paid professional athletes are the best of the best of the best. Most pro athletes only last a couple of years in the majors. We know who are the best because there are extensive statistics kept on their performance.
In my county, many public school teachers make more than I do. There are guaranteed raises for further education. Plus they have more security, better benefits and much more vacation.

Is it possible to mishear internal monologue?
-
@Gąska Depends on your environment. Have you ever heard someone complain "it's so loud I can't hear myself think"?
-
@Mason_Wheeler I always thought it's figurative? At least I always used it figuratively. And it's not quite what I meant - I was wondering about thinking one thing while meaning another.
-
@Gąska "That's a really cool nuclear reactor!"
-
@Mason_Wheeler But if Dick Tracy gay married Prune Face he'd probably keep his name

At the dojo, I can practice instep kicks (kick with the toes pointed down, suitable for groins or chins) at full force on a dummy or a padded shield held by a partner, with my toes taking most of the impact force, over and over and be just fine.
But for some reason, if I'm walking from the bathroom back to my bed in the middle of the night, and I stub my toe, even though my foot's swinging with only a small fraction of the force of an instep kick, that hurts like anything!
I wonder why that is?

@Gąska said in Random thought of the day:

All the time!
Edit: I will add that it's hard to verify though, as your mind likes to retroactively correct stuff all the time.

I never thought about that. I wonder how that works here, we we do have such protections (as they genereally make sense) for parents. I'd hope there's corresponding exceptions.

The dummy or padded shield probably doesn't have sharp bits.

Here's an interesting competition I thought of
Team 1 spends the equivalent of $2,000 developing or improving some open source product (let's say a video editor).
Team 2 picks an existing product in the same category and spends the equivalent of $2,000 advertising it.See who can gain the most users.

@anonymous234 Sadly, experience suggests that Team 2 would most likely win every time.

I have a few thoughts on this:
- If your toes are really taking the most of the impact force, then it isn't an instep kick. Or maybe just a really poorly executed one.
- When you kick your foot probably tenses up for impact, which stabilizes the joints and prevents the sort of joint injury that happens when you stub your toe.
- When you are in a very stimulating environment your brain "turns down the volume." The same stimulus coming in the midst of fewer strong stimuli results in a very different sensation. Ever watch TV at night and have to turn it up to hear? Then turn the TV on in the morning and have the feeling that it's super loud? Or how different the radio volume in the car seems from when you shut it down to the next time you drive?

Thread for unpopular opinions is
we already have a thread for that?
where is it?
is it in the garage?
I have a court order saying I'm not allowed in any garage anymore. Not after i got caught rummaging through the trash at the Judge's house, and setting up a mini meth lab (for science only, not consumption) in said garage.
