Name some good movies that you like!

Star Trek First Contact. This was, I think, the only TNG movie that had a plot that was not only plausible but believable.

If you ignore the enormous number of plot holes. Of course, it's a time travel movie, so it's bound to have those. Still, the part that bugged me most is when they have to go out on the radar dish thing to stop the Borg from building a transmitter... count the WTFs in that scene!

I just watched Raw Meat on Netflix. It's got subway cannibals. And Donald Pleasance. Now there's a movie! (Seriously, it was really good.)

I'm pretty sure Nagesh is a totally honorable fellow and he as an actor must make tons of money so there is no danger, you can give the credit card and even your bank account without problems, but give it to Nagesh and not his alter ego EvilNagesh, that one is pure evil I tell you

I refer you to the list I posted at OP+2.

Indeed, it was a good list. I now know what to refer to next time I'm at the video store wondering what to hire.

Best singing movie ever imho. Gayest movie I've ever seen, also. But nonetheless, it's hilarious.

Agreed. I also argue that it's one of the most pointless movies ever made, in that the plot goes so wildly all over the place* that you need to watch it about four times before the whole "I vaguely understand that now" feeling sets in.

Side note: I had the commentary subtitles on one day, and Richard O'Brien said something about him being a prude back then. My immediate thought was, is he watching the same movie I am?

    * Spoiler alert, It starts with a wedding, then they decide to visit their ex-tutor to announce their marriage proposal (because that's what we all do when we've just gotten engaged) then a tyre blowout, then a zany song about going through time, then the Transvestite appears, then a manhunk is made, intercourse occurs, then dinner (at midnight or thereabouts), then a game of chasey, then a floorshow (in an empty house? In the middle of night?), then they're all aliens and everyone learns a lesson about.... well, something, I'm still trying to figure it out and I've watched it a few times. But seriously, did you expect it to end with them being transvestite aliens from another planet?

  • The fuck? My list has Once Upon A Time In America but I've never seen it. I didn't even know what it was. Maybe I mistook it for another flick that I caught on TV.

Is that Edie Murphy movie or that was different one?

  •  IMDB it.

  • Ok, I've got to ask... how does everyone feel about The Girl Who Leapt through Time?

  •  Well, I have an odd taste in movies, but some of my favorites:

    * Six String Samurai

    * The City of Lost Children

    * 90% of Terry Gilliam's work, most particularly Time Bandits

    * Shaolin Soccer

    * Pretty much everything by Hayao Miyazaki, especially Spirited Away

  • @Cat said:

    Shaolin Soccer
    What, no Kung Fu Hustle?

  •  These are moviesI should probably catch bits of.

Totally excellent one, though very different from other Leone's movies.

Btw, I think about another movie I love but didn't listed : "Ghost Dog", by J. Jarmusch. Who liked/disliked it ?

    I loved it ...

Gangsters who watch cartoons, what is there not to love ?

Since we are there, what do you think of "Dead Man" by Jarmusch. Its even more trippier ...

But of all his movies, "Night on Earth" is my favourite.

Is that the movie with the black samurai assassin and the French-speaking boat-building hot dog stand owner?

That movie was awesome. It had just the right blend of violence and surrealism. I need to watch it again.

  • I watched "The Soceror's Apprentice" last night with Nicolas Cage. It was a timepass movie. I like end where the hero use combo of physics and magic to defeat the evil witch. Also like final part of CPR administration. Why he didn't use magic? Maybe he run out of magic power after beating evil witch with plasma ray.

I've always thought there must be more than one Nicolas Cage. How is he in like 4+ movies a year? Either he picks movies with extremely compressed production schedules, or he has clones...

He's taken possession of an ancient talisman that used to belong to Jude Law, and before that to Michael Caine.  Legend has it that the same talisman belonged to John Saxon back in the 70s.

Remember how his abs were CGI in Ghost Rider? I think they just took it one step further and make an entirely CGI Nick Cage.

Do you know there are bollywood actor in more than 6 film a year. So no big deal about 4+ film in one single year. Don't have to stay on for every shot.

Chrisopher lee is in the guiness book of records for having played in the most movies, 269 movies on imdb right now, first movie 1948, so that is about 4.2 movies a year. Did 5 in '10 and 4 in '09.  So i'd say 4 a year is certainly above average. Granted the guy is very old, so perhaps when you extrapolate the record of other actors they might be ahead of him and 4 a year might actually be a fair average, but i don't care enough to actually find those numbers.

On the subject of Cage, I've yet to see a movie in which he doesn't have the same 3 facial expressions, and to be honest the amount of actual good movies he did can be counted on one hand. But that's hardly his own fault so i won't really count it against him.

Granted. Kick-ass and lord of war where excelent movies, and especially in lord of war his 3 facial expressions worked pretty well. in kick-ass he had the benefit of a mask.

  • Lord of war very sad movie. It make me feel sad to see children in Africa with hands cut off due to War. Not entertaining at all.

Can't see the youtube link for now, but this is my favorite Kusturica's movie, event better than Underground.

I just can't imagine a better movie about weddings. Nor about gypsies.

  • Just saw "underworld". I think the camera guy should have used more light to film it. This movie is trying to save on their lighting budget.

Also movie is silly and boring.

Correct. Only saving grace for movie is hot English Beauty who stars in it. I looked up imdb and WTF, there are three more movies with the same theme. Hope they spend more money on lighting in the subsequent versions.

Yeah, appears to be missing the last digit. Won't go into the WTF that leads to IMDB adding a 0 at the start if the string is too short.

  • Saw a movie called "Shawshank Redemption". Movie is boring till very end. One actor Morgan Freeman tries to hog all limelight and keeps on talking and talking and does not STFU.

TRWTF is expecting a movie in which every character is either a vampire or a werewolf to be well lit.

    FTFY.

  •  You mean it's mostly a standstillie?

  • I see the movie called "Salt". Stars my favorite hollywood icon and I am no talking about Liev Schriber, though his role in movie is very good. Must find more of this guys's movies. Wolverine was good for special effect stuff, but story confused me a lot.

Salt is story about secret soviet program. End of movie especially good where new American President also turn out to be soviet plant. (I am not talking about trees or manufacturing plants here).

I think they better come up with part II soon. One note, Angelina look like man in some scenes.

  • @intertravel said:

Originally written with a male protagonist, the film had Tom Cruise initially secured for the lead, but the script was ultimately rewritten for Jolie.

    Still a good flick, though.

And honestly a gender-reversed spy movie is pretty cool, when you think about it. I'm a fan of any reversal of cliches. (The best spy movie being, of course, Operation Double 007, aka Operation Kid Brother, the Italian spy spoof starring Sean Connery's brother. Edit: don't forget the bitchin' theme song.)

It's ok, but the pacing is funky. They held way too long on unfunny jokes. And I'm not a fan of the Blazing Saddles-type crazy ending-- those always just make me think they ran out of material.

  • Got DVD for Emma, starring Gwenth Paltrow!

    My personal opinions follow:

Firstly Miss Paltrow needs to eat something. All skin and bones. How will she have big fan following like Angelina Jolie, unless she look juicy all around?
Secondly movie is based on some English Author's book. So producer / director take super boring book and turn it into super boring movie. I fail to see satire anyplace in that movie.

    One word - AVOID

  • @DOA said:

    ...

Yeah, I'd say "..." at someone who uses the word "boring" to describe Shawshank.  It's not fast paced, but I don't think I'd use that word.

I'll also second The Abyss, Brazil, and Blade Runner

Some others I've not yet heard mentioned:

    Memento

    Dark City

    Equilibrium

    Hidalgo

    The Game

    Shaun of the Dead

    Contact

I could go on, but that's a pretty good  cross section for the moment.  But I have admittedly strange tastes, I actually enjoyed Speed Racer.

Edit: Actually, I want to add Hot Fuzz. That's such a fun movie - it's what movies should be!

"Insurrection".  What a horrible piece of crap.  I swear you could see the actors giggling as they delivered their lines.  It was almost as if they accidentally released the blooper real instead of the real movie.

  • The SPY next door

This is a fun movie. Disney movie, so kids are safe to watch.
Jackie Chan does his stunts along with three kids. Villians very funny.
As usual they planning to hold world to ransom, but jackie chan and his team save day for everybody. Good entertainment.
