I guess
Well, maybe he's moved around a little bit, but he's been in his home for 23 years.
No, that was me (who d). It's @boomzilla who hasn't moved!

I hate the DMV so much I'm putting it off for a couple years
I was going to do mine when I had to renew my license this year. But when I tried to book an appt (about 1 or 2 months before my license expired), the first available slot was 3 months after it expired. I have a passport, I'll just use that.

Are they going to try to argue that a passport isn't an identity document?

No, his driver's license soon won't be able to get him onto an airplane or into certain federal facilities so he'll have to use something else like a passport.

Of course, when dealing with the TSA, it's highly probably you'll get a twit who insists a drivers license is the only valid thing. At least it will be with my luck!

They definitely see a lot of passports. I've used other stuff, too, without any problems.

Last time I took an internal flight in the US (i.e. not from/to a foreign airport), the TSA guy who inspected my passport definitely seemed not used to seeing one, given the way he looked at it (yeah, I know, it's not a US passport, but it's a passport, it looks like every other passport from every country in the world...).
He even asked me one of the dumbest possible questions (I don't remember the exact words), something like "is this valid?" (with a deep tone of disbelief). Well duh, why would I use it otherwise and if it wasn't valid, would I tell you so while you're checking it?

Interesting. What airport was that?
-
@boomzilla Either one of Houston's airports or Dallas (no bonus point for guessing my line of work!), I can't remember which way round I got this, hem, very smart TSA agent.
Which surprised me even more, since these aren't really small cities where no one ever goes, so I expected TSA to at least now what a passport looks like, even if they might never have seen a French one.
-
@remi yeah, both are major airports where you'd expect a decent amount of international travel.
-
@boomzilla I'm pretty sure I did not fly from the same Houston airport when arriving/leaving from abroad, the flight to/from Dallas was from a smaller one. But a "smaller Houston airport" still sees a lot of traffic, and so does Dallas, so, yeah.
But I'm guessing I just happened to deal with one specific agent in a not-very-smart moment (whether that agent only has not-very-smart moments or not is left open...), that could have happened pretty much everywhere.
I remember that I was a bit stressed out when he started trying to pry out the photo on my passport (kind of checking how well it was laminated), because at that point I was thinking that if he managed to somehow damage my passport, then I would have many more problems when leaving the US a couple of days later (and I was already picturing myself with an obviously tampered-with passport, trying to explain to a TSA guy that the damage had been done by another TSA guy a couple of days earlier...). Thankfully passports are sturdy things and he didn't even scratch it.
-
@remi yeah, they've been hiring and training people at a pretty furious pace. I believe the average pay works out to about $17/hour so you have take what you can get.

@Mason_Wheeler really dark navy blue, that could be mistaken for black from a bit of a distance? Because thatβs what they looked like to me.

In similar (or maybe the same) such events, the actual scenarios were indeed unrealistic, but and won't change the fact that all this shit is insecure.
EDIT: Yeah "replicas that were in many cases created to be even more formidable to access than the actual websites"

@error said in Secure electronic voting system:
I have fond memories of waiting through the line at the DMV, to be (somewhat derisively) told they don't handle licenses there, and that I should proceed to wait in the even longer line at the DPS. The DMV in Texas handles e.g. vehicle registrations.
If you type "driver's license office" into Google Maps it will erroneously direct you to the DMV.
Here in PA, there's someone (and a kiosk) right at the door who asks you for what you're there to do, and if that location doesn't handle your business, they'll redirect you to where you need to go, so you don't have to wait. The person also helps make sure you have all the right documentation that you need. The DMV handles licenses, but private third-party offices handle vehicle registration, and certified mechanics handle inspections.
In NV, the DMV handles everything.

See my Status Thread posts from the DPS in June, where I didn't reach the door for over 2 hours (and I arrived 30 minutes before they opened).

I think I'm going to have to go through the same ordeal tomorrow, because, while they issued me a temporary printout license and told me they would mail me my new one, they never actually sent me one.
