  • Biggest disappointment - All the good questions never asked

Sorry I have been busy uploading trapline video for a TrapperSwampie. He was a newby and had all kinds of questions and requested a how to video. Not at all like the techie sites and video expert sites. Never a question on how to or how would or what's best or ??  In all the years and thousands of posts at many of these high end forums I have never been asked anything similar. EVER.

Why is that? You know why.
Knowledge spreads slowly when you think you know it all.

Now get your mangie hides over to the showdown and force the issue. You may not know everything but you know more about digital video than the rest. How about some honest inquiring questions... You have some time to make up...

P.S. when setting up your user name put a "Swamp" on the end. You will be the envy of the other Swampies there...

Ask ONE good question (People here know more than any forum) on video and or "Swamp Video" related. You owe it to the followers of this thread. Time for some REAL questions....

Techies and video freaks seem to resent anyone who doesn't have to experience the "Learning Curves" of their Trade. 4 hours to Digital Video  empowerment seems to piss most of them (guys at other forums) off... Too bad.

Never a question the CodeDaddy wants to hear. Nope not once. But the wise ass comments were unlimited.

?Why is it 1 huge program

?What has surprised you most with this Super Search

?How about a quick overview on how to use SSDS throughout the day.

?What about SSDS pleases you most, Others wanting the source and trying the program. I just love it and don't care.

    ?Why do techies resist so.

?Will everybody else be using SSDS leaving the techies behind.. (I hope not - my techie friends need it most)

I could go on and on with the questions that were never asked. You can look back all you want and won't find anything similar to these questions. Many respondents whined about me not answering their stupid questions. I have enought stupid questions of my own. and who's thread was this anyway. I want my questions answered and ASKED. If you actually bothered to give a direct response to a direct question when somebody has even gone to the trouble of using the piece of shit that is SSRR you might get a better attitude from people. So far you have repeatedly failed to take part in any showdowns - even ones you tried to start, you have failed to explain how to make SSRR do even the simplest of things, you have failed to bother to explain how the fuck the results are supposed to be interpreted and have also failed to comment on videos showing SSRR failing to search large files, failing to allow certain files to be searched, failing to be as easy as WDS, failing to produce results as quickly as SSRR.

Wrong because you are Know-It-Alls and Perfect Perfects. Pose the right question. Ie get KIA & PP's arguing; when you not they are the experts. They will stick with their initial thought on anything. "Know-It-Alls are never wrong". Arguing with me on Desktop Search and Video. I wrote a search engine and have shot over 10,000 video clips to show off the video capabilities of the program. Yup I sucked them into this knowing they would be there arguing right to the bitter end. And that's quite a while from now.

History will look back on how poorly you all behaved. But it was expected. I've been working with doofuses like you all since 1970.

You have not written a search engine though, no matter how often you claim this you have written a tool that performs a simple linear search of a single file. This. Is. Not. A. Search. Engine.

Shooting 10,000 video clips does not necessarily make you good at shooting video - it simply means you are prolific. Repeatedly doing things badly simply re-enforces poor habits. As someone told me a long time ago "Practice does not make perfect, practice makes habit."

If everyone you have met since 1970 has disagreed with you this means one of two things - you are either a genius and can make revolutionary leaps in knowledge or you are an arse but refuse to see this. People like Einstein were a genius and you are no Einstein.

What we have said all this time is that you are wrong, which is something you keep denying. Now, brace yourself because this may make your head explode: If you keep denying when you are wrong, what does that make you?

I do somewhat agree. I, too, think it could be a good program if it accomplished the same, but would exist under different circumstances. If it had been developed in the times of VC20 and ran on VC20, had itself been written in Ruby and had come with a Ruby interpreter that ran on VC20, and everything fit on a single cassette and didn't need a memory extension, and it loaded and ran as fast as it does now, well yeah, if that were the case I'd have to say: dude, that's some accomplishment you did there (although a useless one). But since it is just wrapping Windows Media Player and Notepad into an impossible to use dustpile of anusness, and does this in the most horrible way I can possibly imagine, I do not agree. The fact it is written in this day and age, serves this little purpose and does that in such a terrible fashion is enough reason why I can safely say that everything about it is wrong, without the danger of coming out insulting or sounding in any way malevolent. It just is that bad.

  • @derula said:

Spectate seems to be a former Cobol/RPG programmer, at least in spirit. Everything file based, separate programs for separate functions, etc. It's pretty amazing he uses VB5 at all instead of say QBasic.

  • Slo Slo changes are best

It's not just this forum and the video geeks that "think they know the answer" and will never change. It's 3/4 of the population. Just look at politics. Once a member in a certain party, always a supporter. Or so it seems. How could I be right about never editing Digital video? And sharing knowledge better than people in Hi-Tech. Impossible their whole lives are about accessing and storing information. But not randomly. Without randomly you have boringly.

When you start using SSDS you wouldn't be satisfied until you write your own version in C or Fortran or Cobol.... Geez I hated RPG almost as bad as programming in assembler with punch-cards.

Slo changes are sometimes the best:

Sometimes not doing a change for years is the best approach. I wanted to change the color of text when searching for the beginning and end of a given word. I'd thought of a number of ways to do it. Including using the 6th search element temporarily and fake it so that string would be considered a "search element" but I didn't do it. NOW I'll just check that there are no spaces in the string and that it isn't at the beginning or end of the line and not another search string. Then hilite it in it's own special color. Very simple why didn't I think of it earlier?

  • @SpectateSwamp said:

As we have stated before random has it's place but it isn't the sole point of a search tool. If I am playing music / videos or looking at photos then random can be nice. If I am looking for source files, emails etc then I want predictability from my search tool.

Surely the better idea would be to have code that is clean, easily understood and testable - that way you could make the change when you first thought of it but easily switch to an alternate mechanism or back the change out entirely at a later date. Waiting"for years" to make a change as simple as highlighting a word is madness quite frankly.

I'll have to agree with you there. Stubborn people who simply can't even consider another person's point of view frustrate me as well. For what it's worth, I have considered your point of view in as much an unbiased manner as possible, and although I've rejected a lot of it, it's because you never address any of our arguments. So, really, I ask that you return the favor and acknowledge our concerns.

It sounds as though you are saying you've found it's better to think through a problem rather than jamming a noodle in the code. That is the first of many steps you should take toward better coding and easier maintenance of your app.

The SpectateSwamp Character Creator Showdown is ON

I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with Eve Online but they recently overhauled their character creation system to use a far more photorealistic avatar-creator. Some of the players have been shaping their characters with the intent to look like Morpheous, Obama, Picard, and even Freddie Mercury.

I've been trying my best to capture SpectateSwamp's avatar with some success, although I've found it's very difficult. There doesn't seem to be a way to make a particularly shaggy beard, although I think the hair color and hair style came out OK, although I wish I could make it look a little less combed. The classic blank look combined with the staring into nowhere (or is he staring at an alien?) came out ok. If anything, I wish there was a way to lose the jaw-line. Apparently there are no Canadian yokels in Eve. One thing I did realize is if SpectateSwamp worked out a bit and strengthened his face muscles, he might look a little bit like Duke Nukem.

If you have a spare character in Eve that hasn't been created yet, see if you can do better. I'd love to see it. Also, Eve has trial accounts so you don't have to spend money to do it.

  • My first thought when I saw that picture is that it was Duke Nukem.

All these questions have been asked before. Spectate just picked them, claiming we should have asked them. The whole purpose was that they are now "planted", and us actually asking them (again) would mean we actually just used what he told us to and thus it's a crime to answer. What I'm saying: he deliberately planted the questions to have an excuse not to answer them, because he knows he can't. That's ... pretty clever.

Well, except from the fact that we asked them first, the excuse he built for himself is a horrible one, and that he now has to come up with new excuses about why he can't answer those questions that haven't been "planted".
