Epic Store (and other "Occupy Steam" movements)

Epic Store
Hard pass
Why are we avoiding the Epic Store?
In my case it's , which is a pretty strong reason.
-
@Zecc I caved in near the beginning and have been grapping random freebies ever since, but still precludes installation of the launcher and those games themselves.
-
@kazitor et al. Well, do what you have to do, I guess. I'm enjoying the free games.
-
@Zecc said in Game Deals Thread:

Because extra stores cause extra background noise to the computer that we may or may not use also for productive work. Rising noise floor has been a problem for years now, which I mainly combat by installing the strict minimum of software that has a startup item or a self-update mechanism. At least Steam has the good grace to stay double-click-to-run, once it's been set that way; it won't try to start a daemon at boot time.
-
@acrow neither will Epic Store.
-
-
@MrL TBP, it's more roguelite than roguelike.

FWIW: I have six different game stores/launchers installed (Battle.Net, Epic, GOG, Origin, Steam, UPlay) and none of them start at startup or have background services running when they're not running. These programs have gotten better than they used to be.

Same shit, different name.

@MrL you don't die of dysentery - that's a big difference.

As fantastic as this sounds, it's not enough to persuade me to play this.

Steam and Epic both launch on startup for me but to be fair that's because I've not set them not to. I have Steam open all the time anyway.
-
@Parody What, no Rockstar Games Shop? ... or whatever it was called. I remember that they used to have one too; I was forced to install for the couple of days it took me to play through Max Payne 3, but I can't find even the name now. Did they kill it off? If so, then I might want to have another go through that game.
-
@acrow Rockstar Games Social Club. And it's alive and well.

Only if it comes with a free cardboard Todd Howard so I can throw darts at it.

Only Steam and GOG Galaxy here, and I almost never open Steam (it annoys me like hell).
-
@MrL what do you use GOG Galaxy for?

-
@Gąska said in Game Deals Thread:

Organizing my library, starting games, tracking achievements, downloading extras.
-
@MrL I guess it makes sense when your library is so large you need to organize it.
-
@Gąska said in Game Deals Thread:

It's easier to have one icon on your desktop or in start menu for launching all your games, than to remember how it looks like for every game, or hunt for it in file system.
This is true for libraries from size 2 up.
-
@acrow said in Game Deals Thread:

Yeah, haven't had anything on that one. I own GTA3 and its add-ons on Steam, but never really got into their games. They got really big at a time when I wasn't doing a lot of gaming.
@Applied-Mediocrity said in Game Deals Thread:

I've got a couple Fallouts and Elder Scrollses on Steam, but no Launcher that I can remember. From what I've heard, their online offerings are best avoided. :P
I suppose I should also throw in the Microsoft Store/new XBox thing, though I don't own anything on there other than the replacements for Solitaire and Minesweeper.
-
@Gąska said in Game Deals Thread:

Yeah, there's a point where it gets overwhelming. Now we've even got programs that link into your launchers and merge them together to show you all of your games (installed or not) on all of the various services. It's only going to get worse as more publishers and/or developers make their own, not to mention the streaming game services.
LOAD "*",8,1
never looked so good.

- Grand Theft Auto 3 (and its related games and sequels) become huge in the 2000s.
- I didn't play them at the time.
- At some point (probably in the early 2010s) GTA3 goes on sale on Steam for $5 or something.
- I pick it up because "hey, this game was really popular".
- It joins the ~700 other Steam games I own that I'll "get around to playing sometime".

I'm in a similar situation with Steam, but I have had multiple copies of the 3D GTA games on various platforms, almost since they first released.

Well, I don't really want to convince you, if you like your way then great.
What I really use Galaxy for:-
Organize library - which means assigning tags to games. 'Next to play' is something to try out or continue playing. 'Crap' is something not to touch (usually not visible in the library) and 'Completed' is something I finished (which gives me a nice feeling of accomplishment). Also, the list on the left shows installed games chronologically, by they launch dates (last played on top).
-
Updates, installs and downloading extras. Browsing web for this is super annoying.
-
Achievements. I like them for some games, for some I don't care, but overall they are nice to have. (still working on 100% in Witcher 3)
-
The most important thing: remembering what the game actually is. I purchase something, because it's 1$, or maybe 5 things 1$ each, and a month later I have no idea what it is. In Galaxy I get to remember almost instantly, and if not, I have manuals, screenshots, store categorization, etc. Steam is absolute shit when it comes to this.

That'd be me with RPGs (Baldur's Gate/Planescape: Torment/Icewind Dale/Neverwinter Nights, KotOR/Jade Empire/Dragon Age/Mass Effect, Daggerfall/Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim) where I have them physically and digitally. I also have a ton of late '90s/early 2000s CD-based adventure games that I never got around to playing and probably don't work now. Too...many...games.

I didn't consider the possibility that someone might become a more active gamer over time.
Protip: if you haven't played GTA3 yet, you'll most likely hate it now. It didn't age well at all.

It comes and goes. I'm also more into RPGs, adventure games, and 2D Metroidvanias and Zeldas than anything else. (The Batman Arkham games got me, though.)

Steam gives you a link to the store page.
If you can't figure out what the game is from that, maybe you shouldn't be allowed to buy games

Why do you say that? Aside from looking like an early-2000s game and not including some features that were added in VC and SA, it holds up pretty well.
-
- When playing with aspect ratio 16:9, the aim circle is off and you can't hit anything. Various other bugs.
- No in-game map of the city. Extremely frustrating.
- Driving model is shit.
- Cars blow up VERY fast.
- At some point in the story, some districts become impossible to commute through because the game decides to spawn shotgun-wielding NPCs that attack player on sight, which can destroy most cars in two shots (and they spawn in groups of 3+).
- Story is quite bland, and only a few missions are actually interesting. The rest is just killing some people that are marked on map.
- Very small map. It didn't look like it 18 years ago, but now it's very jarring.
- There is only one airplane model in the game, and it just can't stay in the air. And getting off a boat is one of the deadliest activities.
- And more.
It's the same problem as with Morrowind. They were both very good games for their time. But the gaming industry has gone such a long way forward in the meantime that they're just too annoying to enjoy now. It can only be help with nostalgia, which @Parody doesn't have for this game.
San Andreas is MILES ahead of GTA3/VC. And the story isn't half bad either. Go play San Andreas, you'll like it even today.
-
16:9 aiming bug
IIRC there is a working widescreen aiming fix available.
no map
Yes, that's true. But not a problem if you git gud
driving model
Not a problem if you git gud
cars blow up very fast
one district is basically off limits after a certain point in the gameI think you're overstating how big of a problem these are, but I may be biased.
bland story, uninteresting missions
Eh, maybe.
small map
Eh, maybe
plane don't fly
It does if you git gud
getting off a a boat is dangerous
Maybe the first time you do it
-
@hungrier said in Game Deals Thread:

Imagine someone who didn't git gud yet. Will they enjoy the game?
@hungrier said in Game Deals Thread:

I'm not. When was the last time you played GTA3? I played it earlier this year, driven by nostalgia and the urge to finally get 100% (and finally got it, and had a great time because nostalgia). It was literally a dice roll whether I go unharmed or die instantly, and there was nothing I could do other than avoid that district. And I lost the roll more often than I won.
Maybe the first time you do it
Because later you learn to only do it by speeding toward coast and plowing twenty meters inland, the boat be damned.
Edit: oh, have I mentioned you can't jump out of vehicle in case of emergency? Because in GTA3, you can't jump out of vehicle in case of emergency - you have to stop in place first. Killed me a couple times.
-
-
@Zecc just remember to do all the side missions first. And glitch into 3rd island for 2 hidden packages to get free AK early.
-
@Gąska ITYM glitch into 3rd island to get the airplane for import/export, then do firetruck/vigilante missions to get the Blista to complete that one
-
@boomzilla You missed one:
-
@Zecc weird. That was the first one I selected.

Congratulation, we made the mods do some work, on Friday on top of it

Retirement will be fun
Unless you're planning to retire very soon, I don't think you're going to enjoy it all that much. Unless you consider hunting for compatible combinations of old Windows build, new hardware and old games to be fun. ... I don't.
Of course, the politicos are going to shatter the internet to isolated pockets, any day now, taking your digital library with it. So the point may be moot anyway.
