    Because it is an entirely different OS, running on entirely different hardware with entirely different needs and features. Plus how on earth would SSRR work on a modern touch screen device, it is currently tied into a whole bunch of obscure command strings which would make it a pain to use. More of a pain to use is really the phrase however.

    SSDS is simple and powerfull. Have a SSDS (play random video) then a 2nd SSDS to (see my last page of notes) and another for (show friends list). No prompts would be required making it far less awkward and extremely quick.

    I'd rather have a WMP play random video then a tail to see my last page of notes and a WLM for show friends list. Or, even better, play ordered video in SMPlayer (or MPC on Windows), keep my notes in my head or on slips of paper (because they're far more "portable"), and use Kopete for instant messaging (or, Miranda IM on Windows. Actually, Miranda IM is the only thing I miss about Windows).

  • @SpectateSwamp said:

    SSRR is confusing and complex, the only person who even vaguely understands it's interface is you. How the rest of us are supposed to just figure out commands like merge (no sane defaults for that one either), .tt, ww or whatever else it takes and at which prompt they need to be typed is beyond me.

    In terms of power it is nearly matched by notepad, i.e. both can search a single text file!

    @SpectateSwamp said:

    Or I could just use WMP, 'cos it can do that sort of thing you see.

    Do you mean to show a list of friends or a list of things to show to friends? I have no reason to just display a list of friends / contacts because these are things my IM, mail etc. clients can already do.

    @SpectateSwamp said:

    Every single time I have attempted to use SSRR it has been nothing but prompt after prompt with no indication of what should be entered (if anything) at any of them. Have you somehow made all these prompts go away then?

    DerulaSwamp DerulaSwamp DerulaSwamp. You had better break down and dumpster dive for windows. What about a SSDS for grocery list. One small Icon on the screen for each of your special info files. Being that it runs from a Flash Drive you have the exact list at home or on a friends computer or any PC on the planet. A more portable application I never knew.

    For you SpenkSwamp I'll build a template for each of the important daily uses. There might be 8 or 10 that I use. In each version of SSDS I'll include a readme.txt file that explains the control file settings and the corresponding prompts that it pre-determines. So you don't have to enter anything. That way it will be easier for you and others to GET SSDS.

    That wouldn't make any sense UNLESS your grocery store has free Windows PCs standing around for general usage, and even then it would be much less helpful than a sodding slip of paper.

    Except PCs that don't run on Windows XP. And I can have the exact same feature via regular file systems, working cross-platform and without any Random Random™ UI.

    So I need to have 8 or 10 separate copies of SSRR just to provide less functionality than the phone already has? Why not provide an easy to use UI rather than the mess that is control.txt and 10 corresponding readme files?

    Of course, you'll first have to pry a physical enter key out of an old keyboard (preferrably rescued from a landfill) and glue it to the front of your phone first. As an added bonus, this will render the sad, previously nonswampy parts of your phone at least as convenient to use and as functional as SSDS itself!

    Or it could be just .JPG screen captures saved to a target folder. Then use those 8 or 10 lists as reference info on your Iphone, Android, Blackberry or WP7.

    How hard could it be to have SSDS create a Jpg file through paint? Shouldn't be that tuff. Then I'll have one main SSDS controling the background versions which creates a new info page each. Or maybe they can just do those screencapture steps manually for now? These "new phones" can view pic files in a directory can't they?

    For an individual who pretty much believes plain text is the only format ever needed you do choose to not use it when it would makes sense. A simple text todo list or diary entry would be searchable whereas your jpeg idea would leave all this information in a non-searchable format.

    Why would I need to run multiple SSRR instances on my phone (which won't happen anyway given the fact is a VB5 app) when I can currently just use google calendar for appointments, task lists etc and they just sync with my phone automatically. This way I have a brief summary of any diary entries for the next few days on my phone's home screen while the phone also acts as a reminder alarm.

    Reminder alarm yippy yappy nobody needs this. You just don't want to admit SSRR is superior. Can your phone create JPG with paint? No. But SSRR will. Oh god I love this feature. It's hated by the techie, but perfect for the normal people. Just like SSRR. God I'm so brillant.

  • Non-Random is OK

    I've done 2 B-day party videos this month. And a couple before that. Pretty much an expert at it now. It's quick and easy and I burn em 2 DVD copies. One set to run with "Random" and the 2nd to run "Non-Random". When first viewing the videos people pretty well want the original sequence to play. After that; they are into Random like the rest of us.

    Slowly but surely this group is getting to know about Video and Random. Video makes sharing real. Our politicians should be videoed. Within 4 hours have total digital video mastery. No app does video like this. SSDS Video is the "killer of killer apps" from here on out.

    Perhaps a method of applying a fractal algorithm instead of pure random random random, such that the pseudo random actually is representative of a fractal system. Maybe varying the fractal algorithm so that one instance might bear temporo-spatial relationship to a leaf's vein structure, or the flow of a river or something. Now THAT would be spectacular. Relatively useless, but at least there would be deeper, hidden meaning within the random random random results. Maybe the hidden meanings of life could thus be revealed by Golf.

    You make an interesting point. Although his random-random features in SSDS might *look* useless, artless, or otherwise only found amazing by a madman, we might just not be looking hard enough at these videos.

    Even his tobacco leaf flyer video might have some deep meaning, even if it's not aliens. Afterall, the way the wind sweeps the leaf is somewhat chaotic and random-- so much so that the stupidest man on earth sees it as proof of aliens-- it at least displays just how random nature is, and how complex wind is. Although we may know how clouds, wind, and leaf-veins form, I don't think we'll ever reach the point where we can adequettely model the systems that create these phenomena to the point where we can, say, predict the exact shape clouds will be 5 days from now to the exact second. At least not in this lifetime. And SpectateSwamp's videos, as boring as it seems, demonstrates that in a deep, almost poetic way. At least if you take out his mumbling voiceover monologue. How are we to say SpectateSwamp's videos are any more boring than the photos of nebulae and other astronomical objects the Hubble Telescope have taken in the last 20+ years? Because we encounter clouds in everyday life? Aren't clouds, albeit smaller, just as complex and spectacular as the nebulae in deep space, if not more? Nebulae, afterall, consist of mainly Hydrogen and Helium, whereas clouds consist of water, pollutants, and sometimes even carbon-rich smoke. In many ways, clouds are therefore even more spectacular than anything else. Plus, the only reason nebulae look spectacular is because NASA just adds false colors to the photos to make them *look* awesome.

    Spectate, I take back everything I've said in the past. You are a fucking genius. I just never realized it until now, although I still disagree that you're shooting aliens.

    I looked at hundreds maybe even thousands of cloud videos to come up with the few vids at archive.org. I saw a lot of flies & birds and other extremely fast moving objects. They had to be special to get uploaded. If anybody took the time to download the originals and check them. You'd see. The cloaked biggie along with the cluster of fast flying objects (one approaches the cloaked flyer) Then there is the tobacco leaf flyer. Rules about leafs. Wet leafs don't fly and dry leafs don't bend. The tobacco leaf flyer does both!! The clip where the sparrow got spooked is top notch too. What do you call it when there is contact between a UFO and a Bird and it is caught on video.  Hard contact of the 3rd 1/2 kind? The most recent one was the distant object following a cloud line. (estimated speed 250+ mph)

                     Cloaked flyer and many FTS objects                   Tobacco leaf flyer                  Spooked sparrow   250+mph flyer!

    I'm going to do some UFO Hunting tomorrow. Don't leave this thread.
