Help me decide between XBOX and PS

@dfdub said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

In both cases, the PS will install the game to the HDD and most likely download huge updates over the internet.

The PS4 will also do huge system updates over the internet and they're mandatory. Like Windows 10 you get no choice, unlike Windows 10 they don't take 5 freaking hours though so there is that.

  • @rhywden said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

My PS4 is connected to the router via a 1 GBit/s network. Also, my WiFi is pretty much at the upper limit for throughput at both 2.4 and 5 GHz so that can't be it either.

That's really weird, then. I can download 60G games in around two hours just fine.

And most of them are even already playable after the first 40 minutes.

  • @dfdub said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

In both cases, the PS will install the game to the HDD and most likely download huge updates over the internet.

Are you telling me I get a disc and then it gets updates time to time? You gotta be fucking kidding me!

  • @stillwater The game updates are not mandatory, though. You just need them if the games in question connect to an online service.

  • @stillwater said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

Are you telling me I get a disc and then it gets updates time to time?

It was more of a warning. Day 1 patches that fix bad bugs have become way too common, so you're not really independent of the internet unless you enjoy game-breaking issues. (Or only buy games from publishers who aren't assholes - good luck with that.)

  • @dfdub said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

Ask Microsoft. They promised backwards-compatibility for the next generation already and added emulation to their current generation years after launch.

Wasn't aware. Although it seems like these are essentially custom versions, since (according to wikipedia), the xbox one version will be downloaded even if you have the original disk. And not all games are available, although it seems to be roughly 25% of xbox 360 games, so that's not too bad. It's nice of MS to make these available for free, though.

I'll revise my earlier opinion. I still wouldn't hold my breath (despite promises), but I guess at least there's a chance.

  • @cvi said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

I still wouldn't hold my breath (despite promises), but I guess at least there's a chance.

Well, yeah. Sony have pulled crazy shit in the past, so there's no 100% guarantee that the PS5 and 6 will be fully backwards-compatible. But they'd have to go out of their way to prevent compatibility - the PS4 is mostly a standard x86 system and that will not change in the next two generations.

Not only that, most of the time it'll ask for a massive 40-50gb update when you initially install it.

  • @pie_flavor said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

Not only that, most of the time it'll ask for a massive 40-50gb update when you initially install it.

On the Switch, they're not even optional. At least on the PS4 you can theoretically play without them.

Publishers who value deadlines more than their customer experience really suck.

  • This is getting to be like problems on a PC all over again, but with a controller.

@dfdub And don't even get me started on the state of indie games on consoles.

  • @pie_flavor said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

And don't even get me started on the state of indie games on consoles.

    What do you mean?

If you're talking about availability, the situation has become a lot better. Nintendo and Sony have made it a lot easier for indie developers to publish judging from the store contents and the games I receive via PS Plus.

  • Considered Harmful

@dfdub I was thinking more Nintendo, I didn't know Sony stopped doing their blood money scheme. I know Microsoft still does.

  • @pie_flavor said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

    I was thinking more Nintendo

They opened the flood gates when the Wii U turned out to be a flop. Otherwise, customers would have complained even more about the lack of games.

And the Switch store is flooded with mediocre games. I would actually like Nintendo to become a bit more restrictive again now.

  • @stillwater said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

This is getting to be like problems on a PC all over again, but with a controller.

The customer experience is better in general, but the general problems with the gaming industry remain. The console vendors used to be more restrictive and prevent people from publishing games that were not ready for release, but this sort of quality control has been largely abandoned because the indie developers complained too much.

The only games which are guaranteed to be perfect at release are the exclusives. I personally don't mind, though, since I usually wait a year before buying something anyway - that way, I usually get the game + DLCs and minus all bugs for less than the original price for only the base game.

  • @pie_flavor said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

That was probably a first-party game, then. The third-party publishers often use cartridges that are way too small to save costs and then require you to download the rest of the game.

@stillwater said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

@dfdub said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

Because you'll never have hardware, software or driver issues with a gaming PC. Yeah, right

Recent Example. Wanted to play GTA IV. Bought on steam. Does not fucking run on Windows 10 without 543543 fucking workarounds and it still does not run okay.

WIth a console, It would have been insert disc/ download -> run over people with cars!

Your mileage may vary, if I wanted to play GTA Vice City I need to have a PS2 or PS3. Meanwhile on PC all of the "GTA 3D series" (GTA 3, Vice City, SA) can actually run if you do those tweaks (for the former 2 it was a matter of running in Win 98 compatibility mode, for the latter it took DXWnd and some hours to workaround the broken multi-monitor code).
Not ideal, but at least possible.

What's more glaring is how Rockstar never considered newer hardware when you look at how the game code is intertwined with the graphics. Run those games at more than 25-30 FPS and they simply start breaking in all kinds of unexpected ways: cars stop coasting and come to an immediate halt if you release the throttle, airplanes don't fly, etc. Just goes to show that they aren't any benchmark.

  • And then the murders began.

Pretty sure I'm going to repeat points that were made in the prior 74 posts, but oh well.

    • If you want the most capable hardware: Xbox One X.
    • If you want to play UHD discs (not just Blu-ray or DVD): Xbox One S or Xbox One S.
    • If you want a better lineup of exclusives: PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro. (There was a fairly comprehensive list above; Xbox mainly has three franchises: Halo, Gears of War, and Forza.)
    • If you have games from the last generation you want to play: Xbox One. (It has compatibility with an ever-growing number of Xbox and Xbox 360 games. PlayStation 4 has no compatibility with prior generations.)

For Xbox, I would invest the extra in an X over the baseline hardware, even if you don't have a 4K TV. On the PlayStation side, the Pro is less compelling without a 4K TV, but there's still the potential for games to run smoother or prettier, so I'd still spring for it myself. 😎

I wonder if some PS4s have a similar problem to what the early PS3s had. Early-model PS3s (mine included) had an issue with the WiFi chip that maxed its WiFi throughput at something like 1Mbit/s. I honestly don't know if that got rectified with the later models or not, but I know it was annoying as hell to have to find a way to string an Ethernet cable all the way across my living room to let the damn thing do updates.

No. Splinter Cell required particular shader drivers, which only existed on graphics cards for a few years, and I have not been able to find any emulators for those particular things. Which is too bad, because I really liked that game and never got to finish it. I still have the disc, though.

I'm sure there's others that are similar.

As far as I know, neither the Xbox nor the PS4 have an official driving wheel accessory. Those have gone out of fashion quite a while ago. There are probably third-party driving wheels for both, but I don't know how well they're supported.

The new Gran Turismo on PS probably has great racing wheel support. I know that GT4 on PS2 had support for a shitton of racing wheels.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy PC parts that are 1 or 2 generations behind the bleeding edge and just put it together yourself? You'd still be ahead of console hardware, and the price should be way more easily manageable.

To throw my hat in and post another comment that is irrelevant to the actual question:

You can emulate NES/SNES/Genesis/N64/etc stuff with a slow/middle-of-the-line PC, which significantly increases your library

  • @stillwater Xbox 360 was better than Playstation 3 on most metrics.

However, Xbox One is worse than Playstation 4 on most metrics.

However, Xbox One has Forza if you like driving games.

Both consoles meet your four point guidelines there.

I dunno what you should do.

@pie_flavor said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

Use your PC without connecting it to your TV.

Don't be an ass, you're not answering the question. First of all, lots of people like gaming on consoles (far more than game on PCs) and there's nothing wrong with that. Secondly, driving games on PC generally suck ass. The best ones are console-exclusives.

@pie_flavor said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

If I had to pick a game console I would pick the Nintendo Switch because it is the only console with enough exclusives that a PC ends up being a totally different category, not to mention the portability.

    NARNTENDAH!

No, Nintendo makes shitty products. No Nintendo console has EVER had a good driving simulator in the history of Nintendo shitty consoles. PieFlavor is an idiot who everybody should ignore.

@dfdub said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

The PS4 has enough high-quality exclusives to justify buying it instead of a PC.

Sadly I actually agree with this. The only catch is: I don't know if it applies to driving games, because I'm not a huge fan of that genre. All I know is Xbox One has Forza and Forza's pretty goddamned top notch.

@pie_flavor said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

The Switch would be good just as a Smash Bros machine. And it's' definitely good as a Breath of the Wild, Odyssey, and Smash Bros machine. I'm not so familiar with PS4's exclusives besides inFamous, would you say the same of the PS4 there?

And if your console breaks you lose all your games and have to buy them over again! Because their store is broken garbage! And there's no way to back-up your saves! And no way to play DVDs (like Stillwater mentioned, dumbass) and I doubt there's a YouTube app but I don't know for sure! And basically PieFlavor is a dumbass you should never listen to because his advice is garbage!

    NARNTENDAUAUAUAUAUUAH!

@dfdub said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Until Dawn, The Last of Us, Bloodborne, Ratchet and Clank, …

But see Stillwater asked for a steering wheel and none of those are driving games.

Also Uncharted is awful. "Hey you're a white dude (SNOWY white; there's no character selection) and you go into countries and steal their artifacts and shoot the fuck out of their military in the process and nobody who built this game saw any issue with this plotline." Seriously, WTF.

@gąska said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

@dfdub said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

The old Xbox problems (red ring of death) seem to be solved as well.

Srsly? That only happened for launch day Xbox 360s. Xbox One is like 3 hardware generations removed from anything that had that problem. Hell it doesn't even have the fucking red ring anymore, it just has a glow behind the logo.

@gąska said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

one problem with PC is that it's quite terrible for couch multiplayer.

It's also terrible for driving games.

  • @pie_flavor said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

@stillwater I'm curious what it is you have against PC. Couch multiplayer games are less common, but I'm not aware of any that have couch multiplayer functionality on console but don't on PC, if that's what you're after.

    Dude.

He wants to play driving games. He wants to use a steering wheel peripheral to do it. PC SUCKS AT THAT.

Look, if someone's a hard-core NARNTEERRNDEEEEUR fan so much that they come in a thread and recommend it EVEN AFTER THE FIRST POST ASKS FOR A CONSOLE THAT CAN PLAY DVDs (which no Nintendo device fucking can), then YOU KNOW NOTHING AND SHOULD BE ENTIRELY IGNORED AND ARE STUPID. Ok?

  • @stillwater said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

I was not aware this is a thing.

It'll never happen if you have a PS4 and the disk says "PS4" on the label. (Or if you have an Xbox One and the disk says "Xbox One" on the label.)

It may happen if you have an Xbox One and the disk says "Xbox 360" or "Xbox" on the label. Xbox has pretty good backwards compatibility, but it's not perfect. (Just dicking around the other day I found out my Xbox One won't play Sonic 06 or that Xbox Spyro the Dragon game. But it will play Panzer Dragoon Orta, which is obscure as shit. And Crimson Skies. Go figure.)

Please stop listening to anything PieFlavor is saying, he obviously knows nothing.

The great Microsoft Xbox Indie Store is gone forever. Alas. The place where you could buy this for $1 and play it with your friends and have an awesome time and laugh the whole time.

Not sure why Microsoft chose to cede this market (that they were UTTERLY DOMINATING last generation) to Sony. Fucking idiots.

You totally slept through the whole Xbox 360 indie store didn't you? This is literally not true. Anybody could put up pretty much anything, Microsoft didn't interfere at all.

  • So it has come down to this, hooking up the old PC to the TV and get an Xbox controller for 80$ and a Gaming wheel for 160$

    OR

    PS4 - 450$ with 3 free games and a cheaper gaming wheel for ~90$.

I am so torn. And yes the PC is old cannot play Forza in High settings. I've also learnt that Gran Turismo as someone pointed out is the Forza of the PS world. If I had to pick a console and if someone let me drive Forza and Gran Turismo and whatever I like would influence the buying decision heavily.

  • @blakeyrat said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

Yeah, as I said, I know very little about the Xbox. I only ever interact with one when play FIFA with my friend who ones one. Other than that, I have absolutely no clue about them and I think I mentioned this somewhere.

  • Also can someone confirm if there are downloading issues when it comes to consoles. When I got splinter cell blacklist it was ~20 gigs and that's all it was. What's with the consoles updating a game consuming 50 gigs and all that. My internet is capped at 200GB at 40Mbps and I don't want this hogging it too much.

If Gran Turismo is on par with Forza, get the PS4.

If it's gonna be long ass download times on top of putting in a disc then that brings back the problems with PC into the picture again.

I second this. If you buy a PS4, it may be a good idea to buy a USB3 HDD as well, depending on how many games you plan on buying and whether you plan to delete old games from your hard drive.

  • @stillwater said in Help me decide between XBOX and PS:

I just checked. My smallest AAA game is 22.5GB (XCOM 2), my largest one 77.5GB (AC Origins + DLCs). Everything else except some indie games and remastered PS3 games is somewhere in between those numbers. So if you cannot afford to download 50GB, you should definitely buy discs.

Updates and DLCs are usually not that large (up to 10GB for a major DLC or major game update), with a few exceptions (don't remember exactly which games, but I think GTA V had huge updates that we're almost as large as the game).

Splinter Cell (the original) and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (the sequel) require an Nvidia Geforce 3 / 4 to be played like it was meant to be. 😢

Mind you, the first one looked reasonably decent when you ran it in "legacy / ATi video card" mode (it compensated for the lack of shader hardware), except for one level: there's a courtyard near a building where a group of hostages is held. It's supposed to be an exercise in stealth because there are searchlights moving across the grounds, except that with modern hardware the courtyard now remains pitch black and you suddenly get shot at because the game notice you were in one of the invisible lightbeams.

The sequel is a total-loss. It didn't have the "legacy / ATi video card" mode, and when you consider that the beginning level contained a part where you had to stay inside the (now invisible) lightbeam to fool an opponent with night vision goggles you can understand that it was Not Fun At All™.

I have Splinter Cell 1 and Pandora Tomorrow (which I haven't tried yet because I wanted to finish the first game before starting the next one). I don't know if they've been revamped, but even if so, I have the original version for PC.

IIRC (and it's been a few years since I last tried), I could play the game, and there might have been a few minor graphics glitches that would occur, but nothing major that would outright kill the gameplay, up until a section a few missions in where Sam is going along some pipes on an oil rig out on the ocean (or something like that), and at one point the screen just turns all black. If I move back just a little bit, the image comes back (I think). I looked it up online and the only thing I could find was that the game was built for a very particular set of graphics cards that had a certain type of shader, and anything else wouldn't work.
