@JBert I accidentally became at the age of 20 when I wanted to buy a new pair of Jeans. I stepped a bit naively into the next store and asked one of the salesmen to help me choosing one.
The first example he brought made me spontaneously say:
Do you also have Jeans in non-kaput?
If looks could have killed...

20-year-old me had the same opinion. Nowadays, I make sure to mention I want jeans suitable for office wear.

My world crashed 5 years ago when Dressmann retired their McGordon line of jeans. Until then I could just go buy another pair of the same model and size, and be out of the store in 3 minutes flat! Now I have to find a salesperson and state "jeans, straight, black, size...".

Yes me too. I still haven't found a model I actually like.

@acrow I feel like I've been buying pants wrong my whole life. I just browse the racks, take a few to the changing room and see what fits.

That's wasting a perfectly good hour of your life on pulling pants on and off in a dinky changing closet. Imagine what else you could do with the hour you'd save otherwise:
- coding
- watch an episode of your favorite TV show
- sleep
- ...
-
@acrow but at what price?
A couple weeks ago, while waiting for oil change in my car, I went shopping and got two pairs of comfortable, well fitting jeans. No time wasted and only cost $40.
-
@Gąska The McGordons were well-fitting and comfortable. (Why else would I keep buying them?) And they cost me €80, which is equivalent of about €40-€50 outside Finland.
-
@acrow so triple the price. I could waste 60-90min on commute and maybe get one pair if they have it in stock, or waste 90-120min on commute+shopping and definitely get three pairs for the same money.
I've seen many "do you value your time"-style arguments about many different things, but I've yet to see a single one that actually checks out when you do the math.
-
@Gąska They used to have it always in stock until one day they didn't. That was the day I learned they'd discontinued the line. And there was a Dressmann at the nearest mall along the way to work. The same mall we usually go grocery shopping at. So I didn't even need to detour. So it checks out for me, minus the time we've spent arguing about it online.
The pair I'm wearing now seems to fit me well enough. If they still make this same model the next time I go to buy pants, I might do like Steve Jobs and buy 5-6 pairs. That should last me a few years.

This will change with age, believe me.

My wife orders all my clothing over the internet. But I've switched to Duluth Trading cargo pants instead of jeans. Much better. Roomier, better pockets, more durable.

On my phone I have a photo of a tag from Correct Pants (Wrangler Arizona something something). When I need new ones I go to Wrangler store:
: - this, times three.
: Want to try something else? Some other model? Any additions?
: No. No. No.
: It's this much money.
: I give money to you. Goodbye.

Works every time. Colors are different usually though.
-
@MrL Mind you, getting the right size (29W/34L) in a non-goofy style is challenge enough.

Sadly that does not work, because sometimes they change the fit even when the model remains the same. Probably because the batch was made in Costarica instead of Bangladesh, or something.
Or maybe they just wanted to copy successful business practice from notebook manufacturers

Since we've all decided to share our experiences here, I shall as well.
Most my shirts, pants and jackets is tAcTiCaL apparel from Poland.

I suggest developing a taste for flared ankles and vertical pinstripes.

Huh? It's much quicker to do it myself than to go through a salesman. I cannot even imagine how it could be otherwise.

Pants and shoes I prefer to buy in person. I can't imagine buying them without trying them on to see how they fit. For example, my waist size hovers in the neighborhood of 37. Pant sizes are only sold in even numbers and aren't perfectly steady - I have to see each time if 36 or 38 fits me better.

@Mason_Wheeler the real joke is not accepting a K-K trade at A5.
-
@Mason_Wheeler In chess, though, the king is never actually killed. That there is no way out for him is enough to get him to surrender.
-
@jinpa I'm pretty sure there exist blitz variants where capturing the king is a valid way to win the game.

That's actually the standard in the US.
