Longtime (pre MACOS 7 ) Mac user.
No longtime Mac user would type "MAC". It's never been an acronym.
And I don't trust anybody who experienced Mac Classic and uses OS X. OS X is exactly as garbage as Windows. The rational thing to have done when Mac Classic went away is to switch to Windows; it's garbage, yes, but garbage with many times the software selection.
maybe not in the USA, but here. most apple/Mac Magazines (back when they were still a thing) were called MAC-Someting (MACNEWS, MACworld, MACwelt, MacLife, MacUp...)

So if you go mac, get a macbook air.
Problem with Air is that it's not retina. IMO you shouldn't buy a laptop in 2018 that's not UHD.
True. Updates should happen

The new line of macbook pros with the touchbar are a complete POS. (I have one, and its the worst laptop I've had for ages)
So if you go mac, get a macbook air.
Well, there still are MacBook Pro without touchbar. The 13" models are very similar to each other, just the model without touchbar have a slower CPU with slightly worse GPU. (2.3 vs 3.1 GHz, Iris Plus 640 vs 650) but are otherwise similar. The 15" model without touchbar is an old model from 2015 that's still sold for some reason.

He focuses on reliability issues from the POV of a repair technician
What is the difference between the point of view on reliability of a repair technician and a user? Something either is reliable or it isn't.
Therefore, videos like this are useful but low priority when deciding what to buy.
Maybe that's just me but reliability is of a lot higher priority to me. I have better uses for my money than to buy a new phone or laptop every year so whatever I do end up buying needs to last.

Hardware may be reliable for 99% of users; the technician only sees the 1% that is broken, I believe was the point. No one takes hardware to a technician when it's working perfectly.

Of course, but if the majority of the 1% turn up with the same exact problem it indicates that there is something wrong with the design.

Ask me why I have a bunch of dead aliases in directories that are supposed to have archived invoices.

@stillwater Should you buy a MacBook? Let's see what the guy who repairs them for a living thinks:
I like Rossman, but he has the repairman's bias. He focuses on the stuff that's important to him, like the way the insides are put together, what's repairable what's not, how difficult the equipment is to deal with, etc. While this is of some vague value to actual users, for most people it's way down on the list, beneath usability, design and a hundred other features.
Plus he's extremely biased against Apple, eg saying that they can't produce a good phone and then giving 2 examples of fuckups.

Why did your OS pretend to save files instead of actually saving them?
Hell, I would have been fine with it creating hard-links (or the equivalent on HFS) for all the utility it affords...

I don't understand the question.
My workflow is to download the document, usually from my mail client, and open it in Preview. I enter the relevant data into the accounting program as needed. I then use Preview's title bar to rename the document to match my convention. Finally, I move it into the appropriate archive directory.
Occasionally I clean out the Downloads directory.
One day I discovered the icon in the title bar could be dragged into Finder.

Yes it did. :)

Which, as I've been informed, does not move or copy the affected file, but instead creates what amounts to a shortcut file wherever you dragged it to. Then, come Downloads folder cleaning time, the linked-to file is erased and the link is useless.
Is this not what you described?

You’re right — odd. So does TextEdit, but in Pages it moves the file. Pressing the Command key in Preview or TextEdit turns it into a move, but that means paying attention to the arrow by the mouse pointer.

Yeah but anybody paying attention knows that their major competitor has had both more fuck-ups and bigger fuck-ups in the same amount of time.
Yeah "you're holding it wrong" was a stupid denial of a real problem, but Apple never had signs in airports saying if you try to bring your phone on a plane we'll confiscate it and kick you out of the airport.

So I've found two Dells that fit all my needs and the kicker is the config is all the same except the first one costs about 900 USD and has 1TB HDD and the latter has a 256GB SSD instead and costs a 100 bucks extra. Is SSD really worth an extra 100 bucks? Am i missing out if i don't get an SSD?
Disclaimer: Have never used anything with an SSD except I've heard it boots up fast yadda yadda
EDIT: Oh, Also How good is a 13 inch screen real estate for coding?
-
@stillwater SSD is absolutely worth it. You know how turning on your computer can take about a minute, and then it's a couple more minutes before it's usable because of all the initialization? My computer turns on in thirteen seconds, and there is zero initialization lag. Although, I'm not sure that an SSD instead of a HDD is good, since programs take up space and so does Windows. See if it's got a slot for an additional HDD. That of course depends on how much shit you'll have installed on it - if it's just dev tools, you should be okay.
13-inch is fine if you don't have the folder tree viewer open all the time. It gets slightly cramped if you do. I prefer 15-inch, my dad prefers 17-inch.
-
@pie_flavor So basically I'll be using the laptop primarily for
-
Visual studio
-
Microsoft word / Chrome
None of that storing movies, games and what not.I'm not sure if a 256 SSD would be sufficient.
I have to choose between a SSD or HDD because some of the 2-in-1 models I'm looking at either have SSD or HDD and not both.
-
-
@stillwater 2-in-1 is absolutely not worth it. You give up so much in performance and ability, and for what? Being able to detach the screen? It's a gimmick, only useful in startingly few situations and none of them development related. If you want a touchscreen with a keyboard that can get out of your way, it'd be much better just to get one that folds over most or all of the way instead of one that gets detached. If it's something you'll be carrying around enough to even think of that, by the way, then SSD is better there too because there is no spinning disk to scratch with movement.
Visual Studio, Chrome, MS Word? You'll be fine with 256GB. If you've still got doubts, ask them about upgradability - my laptop came with a 256GB, but it's got enough space for a 1TB (at the time of manufacture, they might have gotten smaller since then) if I wanted to upgrade it.

256 GB is enough. I have a SurfaceBook with a 256 SSD inside and it's definitely enough for your purposes. I currently have 137 GB free with Visual Studio and Office 365 installed.
Take the SSD.

@stillwater Yes. I should mention that I have also other stuff installed: Like, the Linux Subsystem, Visual Studio Code, Node.js, Autodesk Fusion 360, Affinity Designer & Photo and other assorted programs. Nothing huge but as you can see, there's still plenty left over

If you have that much installed and still have ~130 gigs free then safe to assume I would not be running out of space. Also how is the surface book? Any regrets so far?

It's a great fit for my purposes - I can use it as a regular laptop (I usually connect it to the Smartboard in my Physics lab because the stationary PC in that room is slow as molasses), as a convertible and for creating tutorial videos as a tablet using ExplainEverything.
It's fast, reliable and does everything I need.

I have no fucking idea. All the slim laptops that have this rotate all the way back thingy with SSD tend to be more than 1000 USD :(

@stillwater Shit, man, if you're shelling out that much you may as well shell out for something good. Just for reference, how much is the one I linked in India?

It's not available in India apparently.
A similar Gigabyte laptop costs around 3000 USD.
Oh yeah the laptop i'm meaning to get, without the SSD is 940 USD compared to the 1250 USD for the SSD. I don't know why the price shoots the fuck up when SSDs are thrown into the mix.
-
The probelm here is I already have a machine with the same config but HDD for about 680 USD like 4 years back but it is heavy to carry around. I want one that is easy to carry, ssd and flippable and boom! Double the price!
