Hi Swampies.

I sent out the following email to 15 or 16 local media and town staff this morning. 4 or 5 hours later I have recieved no response. Did I tell you I hate the politicos even worse than the lord it over you techies and perfect perfects.

Town of Osoyoos council meeting of 15 February 2010

Hi all

The first 11 video clips (2 min each) have been uploaded and the next group will
be uploaded tonight.

http://www.telusplanet.net/public/stonedan/osoyoos_council.htm

A few points.

The increase in travel per diem meals allowances. Responses from citizens:
Take you own lunches. We do.
Don't you eat when you are at home?
What is the Town's TOTAL yearly travel expenditures by department?
We are in the worst recession since the 30's. What the H are they doing?
Nobody goes to more conferences and training sessions than town staff.
Staff has the time to prepare comparisons. Do any of these questions arise?

The Granicus council meeting video streaming solution. (my responses)
Granicus will cost 10 times or more than the Cloud computing alternative.
I covered this weekends ladies curling. Can Granicus do this?
How about minor hockey coverage. Is the Granicus solution flexible?
Maybe include Museum tours etc etc.

The town logo copyright. Why on Earth would you spend $5,000 on this. How dumb.
Did you put it out to tender? like you did for the $15,000 roof repair. Why not?

Given that the building permits are ZERO again last month. What proactive steps
is the town taking to mitigate the looming economic disaster?

Is transparency in government just lip service. Will the citizens ever be
allowed to pose real questions at public meetings? Local media isn't doing
the job.

2 of the last 3 council meetings had museum staff presentations and there was an
inordinate amount of time devoted to Goose problems. Citizens are getting the
goose. There have been presentations from people that don't live in town. The
town has no influence (or should they have) re the 4-laning accesses north of
town. Council seems to only want to do "letter writing" in support of this and
that cause. When will council ever get to the meat of town governance. Who sets
the agenda? Are council meetings just a re election / feel good forum for those
involved?

The goose problem is a direct result of gun laws. There are just too few hunters.

What do you think fining citizens for not having tarps on their loads will result in.
Just how do you securely tarp a load on a pickup truck. Try it some time. I was
warned when I had huge garbage bags completely secured by 6 to 8 bungie cords
criss crossing the load. Go to the Oliver dump for an afternoon and check the
loads that are comming in. Tarps are flapping in the wind.

A new truck for the fire chief and considering building a Museum in this economic
environment. Wow what world are you living in.

How do you think citizens will react when they see these questions posed on
storefront computer displays?

Computer news will have a video update on the following issue

A mr C was in the hospital and during those couple days the landlord had the
place painted and cleaned and presented him with a bill in excess or $1500.
Mr C had been there over 8 years. When the bill wasn't paid the landlord took
a Rice Rocket motorbike belonging to mr C's grandson. Mr C is over 80 years old
so they knew it wasn't his bike. We will try and get video of the motorcycle
on the landlords property and have mr C name names. These kinds of stories never
make it to the media. Till now.

Awaiting your response.

Yeah I know. It took me years to stop spelling in all CAPS. All code was like that in the 70's. I don't want to become one of those dreaded Perfect Perfects just yet.

When sharing knowledge via video. Give them a different perspective. At the curling match I had my camcorder on it's tri-pod. High over my head aiming down at the action from the front of the house on in. 12 or 14 feet up. When walking on a trail hold the camcorder at knee level. At the next council meeting, I'll use this technique just to get some more angles. As long as I do it quietly it shouldn't be a distraction. Maybe some interview questions after the meeting. The Old Farts Club wants to know?

Yup and I'll take a lot more still pictures at these council meetings. ie the other tv outfit channel18, the doorway, outside, after forum etc.  Rather than just concentrating on the speaker all the time. Because you have a camcorder don't forget pics. I just about did.

Where ever you are try not to be a distraction. Having the camcorder way up seems to be less of a disturbance.

Don't forget to take some pictures of the toilets, the spectators picking their noses, and the building's roof rail. Or maybe a movie of the latter would be better, maybe some life forms are hiding in there, don't you think?

Sad to say, but I know a few guys at work who used to be old mainframe programmers; they still intermix MAINFRAM STYL GRAMMR in their daily emails.  I never know when they're shouting...  Dijkstra called BASIC programmers "mentally mutilated", but it seems the PTSD of mainframe programming leaves a far worse scar.

In other news, Swampy, your letter was suprisingly well written.  It uses relatively comprehensible English*, no made-up words, and held coherent points with which I even agreed!  Why can't you write to us like that?

Take these sayings like a man and or woman. Maybe I'll copyright some of these revenge words. I never talked technical ever. How would you switch that off and on when chatting with users.

Anyway a question. Why would town council meetings need minutes when it is being videoed? They barely type up 5% of what takes place. Just the votes and who seconds what etc. All of which is video recorded. Could that person be better used doing the video? No NO that wouldn't be good. Having the town do the video just wouldn't be right.

Because people don't have the time to watch a video of a two-hour council meeting and would rather just get the bottom line: What the resolutions were and how everyone concluded the agenda. It's the same reason there exists cliff's notes, newspaper headlines, and book jacket summaries.

I'd love to see where you got the 5% figure from. Knowing you, you'd record everyone's cough and the couple minutes before and after the session when they're discussing sports and the weather.

Quite easily actually, it is a matter of relating to the person you are speaking to and using the appropriate language.

@SpectateSwamp said:

Minutes are a summary of what took place, at the start of the next meeting it only takes a few minutes to review and recap the last meeting. If you had a two hour video the next meeting would be four hours long as it would take two hours to review the last two hour meeting. Think about it.

In a way that makes sense. But 2 hr video is a recent thing. They always seem to make a big deal out of having the minutes read etc. And someone specifically assigned to take them. Hey I'll take those next to nothing notes. Minute and tiny as they are. Why not give the minute taker the evening off.  What idiot would think you'd have to read/play the video minutes at the next meeting to make them official?

It isn't to make them official but more to establish continuity between previous meets and to provide time to check that things are being followed up and acted upon. Often the person taking the minutes isn't there just to take minutes, they would have been attending the meeting anyway and are just taking on this one additional role.

Well, considering the fact that we will never ever get the Swampling to accept that

• "Spaghetti Code" is not a quality sign for software
• SSDS is not a desktop search application
• SSDS is not even a search application at all (in that it doesn't display proper results)
• merging text files is not acceptable
• video/audio random playback should not be part of a search application

• Transparency in Governance - Doesn't happen when they control the media

Can town staff be trusted to do the archiving without editing? I know from experience that townsfolk don't trust town staff to count civic votes without oversight. So why should they be intrusted with the video records. They will go on and on about transparency in governance at the same time setting the meeting agendas so that only unimportant topics are covered. How about videoing the BUDGET meetings. Council will surely approve the GRANICUS solution without looking at the cloud computing alternative that would cost 1/10 the dollars. Probably because Granicus offers far more training and perdiem opportunities.

The Granicus solution isn't about sharing knowledge it's about controling the video. I'm still not sure whether I will be "allowed" to video tonight's council meeting.

From 58 seconds till 1:06 is all the mention this item gets. Nobody in the Free press seems to see a problem here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjTVN8iEHqo

Maybe we can drag someone from Granicus into this discussion. Surely the town council and staff won't make a peep. Till after the contract is signed. What the hey a 2 inch thick contract.

Sorry for any spelling mistakes. But I worked for Shaw cable for a time making me a Shawman along with the other shawmen and shawladies.

• Ahahaha, I love that northern accent.

So what exactly is your "cloud computing alternative"? Something about SSDS? Editing no video so that your town will have to pay for the archive of hundreds of terabytes of raw video? Or are you planning on relying on YouTube to control the video instead? Looking at Granicus' website, it seems they offer more services than just covering video. While I have no strong opinion on Granicus -- who knows, maybe they really do want to control the information? They do pander to politicians, after all, -- I can say with a fair amount of confidence that you're not going to find a "cloud computing alternative" that offers video recording, archival, streaming retrieval, and most importantly an SLA to fix things and restore backups when the inevitable technical difficulty arises. Face it, this is something SSDS in all its misunderstood glory can never do.

Eventually, all that video evidence of aliens in your town council has to land on some magnetic platters and tape somewhere. And someone is going to have control over it. I would rather have its custodial responsibility handled by an entity other than YouTube and handled without having to type gf at prompt number two.

However, having said that, your remark "Probably because Granicus offers far more training and perdiem opportunities" gets my approval. That's the kind of cynicism I like to hear. (And living under one of the most corrupt state governments in the Union, I get to hear it a lot. Power to the people!)

Doug,

Thank you for the offer to record council meetings and stream the video
on your website.

I tried to call you but I got a recording that stated your number is not
in service so I am emailing you instead.

As council advised you, our council procedure bylaw and video taping
council meeting policy currently permits only Channel 18 to tape
meetings.  Council passed the following resolution at the January 25,
2010 meeting:

"That staff prepares a report to council on digitally recording council
meetings with background information on space constraints, cost of this
service, and recommendations."

I am currently researching this topic and waiting for information that
is needed in the report to council.  I hope to have the report to
council on March 8th.  I will provide you a copy of my report and let
you know which meeting council is considers it.

Until council discusses the report, our current policies do not permit
you to tape the meetings.

Thank you for your patience.

Corporate Officer

Well they shouldn't be able to. Wait till the voters know how secretive they are. Why on earth should we allow them to control town content like they do. Edit here, create dumb agendas there. When they can't be trusted to count votes they can't be trusted PERIOD.

Yes they should. Without guidelines and restrictions who records things where, any nut can come in, record some shit, publish it without review, and rip events out of context, producing a vastly skewed view on matters.

But I'm mostly just posting to get the tag in.

• I suspect that the reason they did this was to prevent you specifically from bothering civil proceedings with your semicoherent rantings.   Way to go, Swamp.

By the way, you don't video record the vote-counting process, do you..?  Have you reshot the video a few times in slow motion?  There are probably aliens afoot.  Why else would they want to hide the truth from an alien hunter? I mean, if they want to elect nefarious human-alien hybrids for the town council, what better way than to hijack the vote counting?  The counters are probably in league with the Granicusians!

So Mr. Mandziuk mentions that you offered to "stream the video on your website"?  What, are you planning on hosting it all on archive.org?  But then they'll have control of the videos!  And they could be aliens too!!

Nope I don't make a sound in any of these meetings. Just there to post the video facts.

@Xyro said:

Problem here was on the Provincial and Federal level each candidate has what is called a scrutineer who can watch the vote count closely. In civic politics that person is called an "Agent" and they don't have that right. Unless you take a stand like they did in Whitecourt. The town staff reluctantly allowed for the viewing of the count. Under the threat of a punch in the face. Why would town staff not want to allow these agents to view the counts; to a point where they were being threatened with physical violence?.

Nope I put them up on DropShots.com Ten at a time and rotate those 2 minute clips out with a fresh bunch the next day. They could do this themselves for 1/10 the cost of the Granicus rip offs. But then they should not be trusted to keep the video if they can't be trusted to do vote counts. And they can be trusted. I'm sure aliens would be more truthfull and trustworthy than the Civics.

Just imagine what crazy things you'd say if the Granicusianoids only allowed you to view ten 2-minute clips per day!  Who decides what the public gets to view per day?  You?

Yes they should. Without guidelines and restrictions who records things where, any nut can come in, record some shit, publish it without review, and rip events out of context, producing a vastly skewed view on matters.

But I'm mostly just posting to get the tag in.

You're not testing Derula's script too? I notice a suspicious duo of tags in your posts.

Naw, I'm not.

Real men do it manually.

Wouldn't happen. They would pay dropshots a few dollars and post unlimited video. Mine is FREE free. Granicus is far from free. And has a 2 inch thick contract.

But then the aliens at Dropshot have control of the video.  And without an SLA.

• SSDS changed my life.. I am a true convert for life!

After spending many hours reading all these threads, I decided to download SSDS and try it out.  It changed my life.  It's such a revolutionary program, I cannot express my gratitude.  I have spent many years looking for a program that could take me absolutely nowhere in an instant.  SSDS is that program.   Now, instead of beating my head against the wall in an attempt to drive the kashisties out of my brain, I just start up search.exe and watch it endlessly loop in error mode.

Thank you SpectateSwamp, for this wonderfully useless program.

     I am your man FOREVER.

I think this might make 3 or 4 that are onside. We'll have a big party when the Swampie count reaches 10

I've been showing my 63GB of trapline video to the New windows 7 user with SSDS. 1100 video clips all winter trapline running random. Being a bush girl she was thrilled with her computer.

• Perhaps some elaboration is in order?

• This just in

In other news, medicine stones: http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_3701025.html.
@Now quoting the totally reliable news source said:

A Polish plumber has become a faith healer after finding a 'mystical' stone while digging up drains under his house.

Jacek Slominski has been swamped by demands from hundreds of patients since he pulled the stone from the earth where it had lain undisturbed for hundreds of years.

"It has a huge Z carved into it and as soon as I touched it I felt this tremendous energy coming from it," he said.

"I've had a bad back for years but all of a sudden all the pain left me and never returned," he added at his home in Bialystok.

Now Mr Slominski has become a full time healer and claims that patients travel hundreds of miles just to touch his healing stone. "I don't understand it but it works and it's better than fixing broken toilets," he said.

Well O.o to you too DerulaSwamp.

Hope some of you SpenkSwamp, SpenkSwampDaddy BarionTheKingSwamp and MasterPlanSoftwareSwamp would show up over at channel9 CoffeeHouse. Where I'm battling Stupid. They are just resisting the idea that SwampSearch can be this great. Maybe I have to start awarding Swamp t-shirts to get the Swampies to make the move.
