@ben_lubar I'm sure you could write a cd program that changes the parent process's current directory. At least I am pretty sure it's possible on Windows.
On linux, I believe if you attach a debugger you can attach arbitrary code in the debugged process on its behalf. Including executing the
chdir()
system call.Implementing a
cd
command that way seems like though.

If double-clicking Word brought up OpenOffice Writer, I'd probably just shrug and start writing.
No one here believes this.

@ben_lubar Dwarf Fortress has an icon.
Invoke-WebRequest
does not. You would only know thatwget
functioned as an alias forInvoke-WebRequest
if you typed it in. Plus what @blakeyrat said. But nobody is pasting in a bashwget
command and expecting it to work. Instead, it is one of a couple of different aliases (includingcurl
) which most people consider synonymous with the act of invoking a web request from the command line. Obviously nobody wants to have to type out the whole Invoke-WebRequest command every time, so they choose an alias which works for them or make their own, andiwr
is less beginner-friendly because it references the name of the command rather than things the newcomer already knows. And "curl" or "wget" are obvious to a newcomer? Neither of those inherently conjures up a mental image of downloading something from the Web; they make exactly as much sense as most other *nix command names and are only useful if you're already familiar with *nix. If you want an actual alias that makes intuitive sense, try
download
.

I have a mini PC at home, which sole purpose is to run a browser to play stuff from Netflix, its display being my TV, of course.
You're . Just get a firetv stick. You will save the $20 that you spend on it on power costs alone in just a few months, although you will lose the tiny remote all-the-damn-time. Good thing they also have an android app that can function as a remote.

Yeah, we chose that civilized is not for us some time ago. But that's another story. What I would like to know is what exactly stops Netflix from supporting things like firetv anywhere*.
*or why is Dr Mabuse not available in my region. Wtf. Wtf!?!?

What does that mean? Like you can't use a firetv stick in your country, or netflix won't run as an app in your country?
I'm pretty sure both things can be solved by a good VPN.

netflix [...] VPN.
Tried that, PITA, not worth it.

That's not the PITA part. Netflix fights cross region access, by detecting proxies/vpns and banning their IPs (or whole networks) or cutting the stream (like mid-movie). So you have to change your configuration all the time.
All the time meaning once a month, or once a day for a week, or twice a day - depending on Netflix urge to hunt proxers during given period.

IME it just gave some silly error code when starting the (PS3) app until I removed the region lock workaround.
