The UK is becoming a police state.

@TimeBandit 10 years?! That reminds me of what High Voltage pictures did to the people that pirated Hurt Locker, except this is far beyond what they did.
-
-
@TimeBandit "is becoming"?
-
@TimeBandit "is becoming"? Sorry what was it 10 years ago when your government placed like 50,000 CC TV cameras facing every public space? Happy joy fun land?
-
@blakeyrat I find it particularly instructive that the very novel that warns against such a thing was written by someone from this little island. You'd swear the government was treating it as a guidebook rather than the warning it is.
-
@Arantor OTOH I'd like a bit more of public safety around here, wouldn't mind CCTVs

Just give guns to everyone
-
-
@Boner That’s a lot like the other month in Belgium, when someone drove his car through a pedestrian area in Antwerp a few days after the similar occurrence on that bridge in London: going by what I saw on the news, the man was a small-time criminal who had had a falling-out with his girlfriend, got drunk, and probably in a fit of rage drove through the pedestrian area. You can excuse the police arresting him for thinking it’s a terrorist attack, but even a week or more later, after the circumstances above had become widely known, he was still held as a terrorism suspect, with the reason cited as being because that allowed him to be detained for longer than if he were a common criminal.

Guns are forbidden here, but there is an exception if your job is risky. Recently a drug dealer was judged not guilty from illegal gun carrying because drug dealing is a risky job (still guilty from drug dealing anyway). So we literally only allow criminals to carry guns.

So politicians are OK then

but could you delete the video when you were done with it?

Like they say: When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.
-
@TimeBandit Yeah well I've been banging on about it since forever. Emailed MPs and they don't seem to give a fuck.

I see - so our policemen don't carry guns. Good to know.
-
@lucas1 Actually I will email my MP. I can't actually post the transcript here as it is supposed to be confidential.
-
@Rhywden That is the most stupid way of interpreting that.
-
@lucas1 send him a letter in paper, these are supposedly taken more seriously

FLAGGED for pendantic dickweedery.

It's a stupid saying to begin with.

How so?
Your crime statistics alone don't support the implied claim.

Uh...sorry, you've lost me here except that you've probably proven that you are just ing.

@boomzilla Exaxctly: Your country is a lost cause. Which makes the saying stupid: It's mistaking a cause for an effect.
-
@wharrgarbl The guy has a twitter and a wordpress blog which tbh looks like he set it up himself.
Also the answers from him were fairly tech savvy considering his age. So I sent him my phone number.
The main problem I had was Amber Rudd and her Encryption crusade. I told him that the tech was out there and anyone can make another whatsapp fairly easily. I wouldn't know all the pieces but I could have a fair guess how to make a similar service.
When I was in Manchester the MP didn't even fucking bother emailing back.

Your mom is an effect.
Seriously, what the hell are you talking about?
-
@Rhywden Not really. All it is saying is that when you make it illegal to carry weapons to defend yourself those that won't follow the law will i.e. criminals. That is because they know you are less likely to be armed with similar firepower because you are obeying the law and they aren't.
-
@Rhywden The USA is the only country I know of that has a proper free speech law. Yours certainly doesn't. Mine is a joke.
If you are in Scotland you might get put in prison for a joke to annoy your girlfriend.
-
@wharrgarbl Actually I have heard very little from Amber Rudd after asking my MP to speak to her specifically about it.
I might email him again to see what her response was. But it hasn't been brought up again but that might be because the General Election.
The Conservatives are going to win it. It is going to be the 80s with Thatcher all over again.

I can't tell if you think that's a good thing or a bad thing.
-
@Dreikin Well having over 10 years of anyone party in charge is a bad thing in my opinion.
- Labour got thrashed in the council elections. Corbyn has been disastrous. Most of his cronies like Diane Abott are idiots and racists.
- UKIP is demolished (tbh without Farage they are useless and their main reason for existing is over).
- Greens are ridiculous.
- Libdems aren't going to to come back anytime soon.
-
@SlackerD Any computer related crime has quite hard penalties in the UK.
-
@wharrgarbl yeah, we have a lot of cameras in Buenos Aires.
it doesn't stop the violence, it just makes good videos for the news =/

Understandable - CCTVs are a tool - they can be used only for good at the hands of a competent government.
-
@CreatedToDislikeThis said in The UK is becoming a police state.:

You're funny :D
-
@Jarry That's seriously depressing, especially as more and more are added everywhere.
-
@flwf indeed, yet no one wants to ahve the discussion about how those will be used and who'll have access.
Huxley was right, we're so blinded by the entertainment that we don't care anymore...

Probably because they think that "if we only punish them hard enough then crime will be lower!"
Nevermind that it doesn't work like that.

Using AI to decide if they keep you in custody
-
@TimeBandit Based on some of the stories I've read about UK police, the AI might do a better job
