Identity Crisis

I currently have two Android devices and two Windows Phone devices connected to my work PC, as I'm testing our new Xamarin app before release. Deploying the Android app to the Android devices (Nexus 72012 and Fire HD 8) works fine: they show as separate targets in the target list on the toolbar. Deploying the WP8.1 app to the Windows Phone 8.1 device (Nokia Lumia 920) works fine too.
Then I try to deploy the Win10 UWP app to the Microsoft Lumia 950, a Windows 10 Mobile device:
Basically, when deploying a WP8.1 app, VS2015 can figure out which phone is which, and deploy to the right one. But when deploying a Win10 UWP app, it can't.
-
-
@RaceProUK Because obviously you wouldn't want to test your stuff on more than one device. What, that would almost indicate some basic level of quality!
-
@cvi Even Microsoft don't expect anyone to own a Windows Phone, let alone multiple Windows Phones.
-
@loopback0 or, they never tested that scenario since there is only one guy at Micro-Soft with a Windows phone: the guy leading the MS phone project

WTF? Why would you test WP, but not iPhone?
-
@cartman82 said in Identity Crisis:

Because we don't have a Mac with the latest XCode installed, which means we can't even build the iPhone app, let alone test it.

Maybe you should sell all your WP test devices and scrape up enough cash for a second-hand Mac Mini and an Phone 4 or something.
-
@cartman82 The WP devices are my personal ones (as are the Android devices).

Maybe @RaceProUK didn't draw the shortest straw.
(based on the good things I've heard about XCode)

I've heard ugly rumours that late-model versions of Visual Studio can build for iPhones...
-
@Steve_The_Cynic Not 2015: that requires a Mac to actually make the app package.

VS2017 is almost here! :)
-
@cartman82 You also should know that the EU & UK have some of the highest adoption rates of WP devices, which comes ahead in marketshare over iOS. Targeting Android & WP in the UK is like targeting Android and iOS here.

@RaceProUK, stop spending all your paycheck on Windows Phones !!!
-
@TimeBandit
Maybe "Windows Phone" is just some weird British spelling of "iPhone"?

i thought redmond was PAYING people to use winphone these days?
or was that RIM?
-
@accalia That might have been RIM: MS have actually discontinued the Lumia line, and this mythical Surface Phone is yet to appear.
-
@accalia said in Identity Crisis:

No, even by paying people, they couldn't convince them to use WinPhone.
But... you can get paid to use Edge and Bing !

sure, but then i'd never be able to actually find anything online.

Average Microsoft meeting:
"People still aren't buying our products"
"How about we change their name again?"
"Brilliant!"

Do they pay you to stop using other browsers?

My point stands.
-
@cartman82 I have no compelling need to personally own an iDevice; I'm happy with my WinDevices :P

More than 6 devices? At least 2 of those is @RaceProUK so that's cheating.

What? Android and iOS are the top in the UK for sure.

I have two Lumias (and have owned three WinPhones in total), and even I'm calling

Doesn't sound anything like my experience.
Both Swedes and Brits I interacted with seemed to be interested primarily in Apple devices, even above Android.
-
@RaceProUK Which is seriously sad, I really want a SurfacePhone, whatever it ends up being like...
I will upgrade immediately if they manage to convince Verizon to carry it.
-

The non-random sample I conduct from time to time (i.e., looking over people's shoulders on the train occasionally) says that there are a lot of Android and iPhone devices out there, with Samsung being the most common maker of Androids. There's also some WinPhones but they're a lot less common.
The smartphone I see most often on the train is an Android, but it's mine anyway… :p
-
GB and Italy had a somewhat significant share of WPs. Had.
I gave up myself on WP as well. I don't see how it can ever get
backto meaningful numbers.I'm also developing a mobile app with Xamarin, iOS and Android are the only targets.
-
@Zmaster Verizon worked hard to kill it, which I'm sure didn't help. I like the platform, and it's pretty likely they'll keep making them, just because it's now the same base OS code. As long as there's hardware every once in a while, I'm fine with it.
-
@Magus And if they actually manage to pull off this X86-on-ARM-thing then it might become really interesting.
-
@Magus Plus, there's no way for an OS to get in the market once another one's established. Because customers will ask "oh what about this phone", and store clerks will say "this one probably won't run the apps you want" and customers will be like "DO NOT WANT".
...and that's why Google pretends to push HTML5 but actually pushes Android.
(Fun thought: Microsoft could either add Android app support to Windows Phone or push HTML5 enough to get it to replace Android, thus making Windows Phone popular, but losing UWP which is what really matters to them)
-
-
@RaceProUK Dude even my crappy one man company has a iOS build machine.
-
@lucas1 How much did you pay for it all?
-
@RaceProUK About £500. Though I did take the thing apart and install an SSD.
It is an MacMini early 2015, 8gb of ram and I took the crappy 5200rpm drive and installed my own. There is an iFixit guide somewhere. I have Jenkins on it and it will kick off a build anytime I commit to TFS online.
I've since bought a MacBook Pro with Parallels because the Dell XPS machine was almost the same price and wasn't as bling.

@RaceProUK No new.

I think it was similar to that, remember this was over a year ago and I don't think you can change the hardrive in modern models as easily as I did.
-
@lucas1 Hmm… Better priced than I thought they'd be. And we wouldn't need anything high-specced: the base model would be more than adequate for our needs.
-
@anonymous234 said in Identity Crisis:

And in mobile chrome is already the new IE, I already seen some sites that don't work with mobile Firefox
-
@RaceProUK I configured the base model with 8gb. While the price is extortion, I believe it is soldered in.
Look on iFixit for that particular model whether you can replace the Hardisk, because SSD is more important than ram in most cases IMO.
-
@RaceProUK said in Identity Crisis:

It's Apple so everyone assumed it'd be expensive and didn't bother looking? ;)
Even if they were twice that, that's not really that big an expense if you're a company who has an iOS app.
@lucas1 said in Identity Crisis:

I think you still can in the Mini which uses normal SATA drives.
Current Macbooks on the other hand, you're right, you can't swap just the drive.
-
@loopback0 The generation I have (the generation before the shite they just released, why would you get rid of magnet power jack thing, it is brilliant). You can swap the main disk out but you need to buy a special replacement. I have a 512gb model and I am nowhere near the max using MacOS Sierra so I guess I am okay for now.
-
@lucas1 Ah yeah, I thought the 2014/2015 generation soldered the drive down but as you said, it's just a special type of drive.
My work laptop is that generation and is also nowhere near filling up the 512GB drive. That's pretty much the reason my personal one (which is the current generation complete with Touch bar) only has the 256GB drive.
-
@loopback0 The new MacBook Pros are too expensive IMHO. Might was the same price as a Dell XPS of similar spec. Now they are worth more than a decent second hand car.
Nope rather run Linux.
-
@lucas1 I agree. When I bought mine at the end of last year, the previous one was still available but PC World had a significant discount on the current one which made the gap a lot smaller. Without that discount, I'd have bought the previous one.

Previous gen Mac Mini is actually a much better deal compared to the current 2014 version. It has 2 replaceable RAM modules and replaceable HDD, I think, and CPU is in a similar speed class (double core something). We have one of those in the office, and one of the frontend guys is doing serious FE dev on it.
