RE: TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML)
@Captain said in TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):
I really dislike how desktop users are frequently seen as second class citizens on the web, especially if they don't maximize their browser window.
For example, I'm sitting in front of a 24 inch 1080p monitor. I have an Amazon window open, and taking up half the screen. It didn't switch to a responsive layout optimized for that width.
I then switched to a different tab/site (same window, so same width). It was in the mobile site, and I was staring at the stupid top menu for the site instead of what I wanted.
Can it really be so hard to make a layout that works well for "small" windows? I mean, Jesus, 960px wide isn't even that small. What's the point of a big monitor if you can't put two windows next to each other?
Heck, and then I go back and remember what it was like in 2007, when I had just bought a 24 inch iMac and I could easily put two terminals and a narrow browser window on the screen and it looked fine.
This seemed to happen at about the same time I upgraded from a 22" 1080p monitor to a 40" 4K monitor. I thought I'd have 4x the screen space, but the change in UI paradigms meant I only had about 70% of what I used to have. I'm worse off despite having better hardware because today's UI designers care more about trendiness than creating usable designs.

RE: Driving Anti-Patterns - Necro Edition
This lack of police enforcement stinks. I've only been on the road a few times these past few months, and the maniacs are out in force. Near-accidents everywhere. My last one, I was in the center lane of a 3-lane highway (the right lane turned into exit-only in a couple of miles). A car on my right decided he wanted to be on my left and cut in front of me while braking hard. He couldn't have missed my front bumper by more than 3 feet, at highway speeds, and I'm in a crew-cab pickup truck with a factory 2" lift kit so I'm not hard to see at all. My ABS has never worked so I locked up my brakes, smoked my tires, and managed to stall the engine out while avoiding him. I never knew you could stall like that when you have an automatic transmission.
Also, lots of idiots going 30 MPH over the speed limit while weaving in and out of traffic and using on-ramps as passing lanes. Makes me glad my motorcycle is currently not available because I'd get pasted on something that underpowered.

Yes, and you're obviously the one arbitrator of what you deem newsworthy and everything that does not fulfill your stringent criteria is not worthy of your interest.
How remarkably shortsighted of you. How remarkably stupid of you. You're doing the same bloody thing you're accusing them of: Picking and choosing and condemning them for not catering to your every whim.
Do you really think that this despicable "Redstate" site is worthy of your attention? If yes: No problem. But I think I'll discard anything you say in the future because you obviously cannot think for yourself and need those crutches to pander to your prejudices.
That goes for the rest of you as well who are doing those moronic: "Oh, but journalists are all equally bad!"
It also reeks of that usual moronic extremism. Yes, extremism: There's only good and bad and you obviously label all press bad and thus everything is the same and no one can be believed and thus we can simply swallow the garbage you guys insist on trying to feed us. I'm done with that shit.I intend this as constructive criticism and mean no disrespect or malice, but the parable about removing the plank in your own eye before pointing out the speck in someone else's really applies here. You're a smart guy, but you've got a super sensitive hair trigger on stuff that is a non-issue for anyone else I know. You let that trigger get pulled and suddenly you throw your rationality out the window and you simply quit making sense. Get help.

Oh, you probably have a transverse V-6 then. Been a long time since I worked on one of those, and reaching the back cylinder head was basically impossible without removing a bunch of important stuff and having hands the size of a small child's.

I can never see that without being reminded of a science fiction story from the 1970s (?), probably (maybe) by Kurt Vonnegut, in which a scientist discovers/creates a solid phase of water, called ice IX (or 9; I don't remember), that is thermodynamically stable at room temperature.
This reminds me of this, of course:

RE: Pi Hole Not Doing Its Thing for Linux Clients (Solved)
@mott555 Found it. The "Enable DNS over HTTPS" setting points Firefox at an external DNS server and completely bypasses local network settings. In effect, the setting for "more privacy" was resulting in less privacy.
Thanks.

RE: Pi Hole Not Doing Its Thing for Linux Clients (Solved)
@Rhywden Interesting. If I do nslookup on a blocked domain, it gets an address of 0.0.0.0. Yet the site still loads. So it must be my web browser (Firefox) that's doing something odd with DNS lookups.
-
RE: Pi Hole Not Doing Its Thing for Linux Clients (Solved)
@Unperverted-Vixen The Pi Hole is broadcast as the primary DNS server by my DHCP settings, which have no fallback/secondary DNS configuration.

Pi Hole Not Doing Its Thing for Linux Clients (Solved)
Any Pi-Hole users here? I have one set up for my home network, and I've realized it isn't properly blackholing domains for my Linux Mint system. It works fine for my Windows PC. I'm guessing Linux Mint has a backup DNS server setting somewhere that it is falling back on when my Pi Hole blocks a domain, but I can't find it.
Any ideas how to fix this?
EDIT: Firefox's "Enable DNS over HTTPS" setting bypasses all local network settings and uses Cloudflare for a DNS provider. Uncheck this and then Pi Hole works.

RE: Tales from Coronavee-rooss Italy, mamma mia!
"Confirmed cases" for my city is skyrocketing. Meanwhile, the total death count is going down. Either COVID deaths are temporary and they got better, or something was incorrectly being counted as COVID deaths and they're being retroactively removed from the statistics. The local news showed some health statistics, and something like 80% of our deaths were people over age 65, and 100% of the deaths were people with multiple severe health issues prior to COVID.
EDIT: For an example of the pre-existing severe health issues, one of the deaths was a friend's stepfather. He was in his late 80's, in hospice care, and was already dying prior to COVID. It shortened his life by a matter of weeks.

I can't speak for the other non-lockdown states, but while Nebraska is officially not locked down at the state level, in practice it really is, just by the cities instead. Maybe not as much as other states, but our misrepresentation by the media as a completely-open and maybe even defiant state is so far from true that it's not valid to use us for a comparison like this.

RE: The Official Don't-Interpret-My-Dreams Thread
I dreamed I woke up and had this terrible feeling that something bad was about to happen. I sat up in bed and was completely unable to open my right eye. I went to check my phone, but it wasn't my phone. Someone had broken in, thrown my phone on the floor, and put their phone on my charger?
I was also very disoriented and clouded, it was like my senses were operating at about 20% and it was tough to move or perceive anything. I reached beside my bed (I keep a Walther PPQ holstered there), but the holster was somehow upside-down. I snapped it off the bedframe, unholstered the gun, and something was very wrong with it. The weapon light was attached to the top and it fell off. Then I realized it wasn't my gun--it was a SilencerCo Maxim 9, an integrally-suppressed handgun. So whoever switched out my phone had also switched out my gun and put something very illegal in its place!
I heard noises coming from the other room. Sounded like angry dogs. I took the gun, headed towards the bedroom door, and the dogs got louder. Then I just froze in terror. The door opened, the dogs approached, and I couldn't do anything. Couldn't really move, my senses were incredibly blurred, my right eye still wouldn't open. I made some kind of whimpering sound, which I must have made in real life because it woke me up. As I woke up, I just barely caught sight of the "attack dog" approaching, and it was just a little Dachshund.

Assuming it's not a financial matter, or a side-effect of a disease or its treatment, I have never quite understood how a person could be unwillingly underweight. Have you ever eaten a honey bun? (inb4 ) They're pretty easy to eat and they have about 600 calories each. One or two of those a day should solve any problems with being underweight.
Food just doesn't really matter much to me. My appetite is usually low, and when I'm busy/stressed/not feeling well, I end up unintentionally missing meals without really noticing. I don't know why I'm this way, but on the plus side, I sometimes get to binge on cheesecake to maintain weight.

My city is supposedly a week after the "peak," whatever that meant. Now our case rate has gone from 1 - 2 new cases per day to about 100 new cases per day. The death count isn't changing though.
Ah, so this sudden jump in cases corresponds to the new testing initiative that just began. So they're detecting a huge number of mild cases now where they wouldn't have bothered testing before due to a lack of tests and prioritizing them for people who were extremely sick. Which means this is far more widespread in our area than anyone ever realized, with a much lower ratio of deaths to infections than previously reported.
