I think it's part of a plan to get there. If people get used to NASA launching Orion craft then they won't look as closely at a drive with the same name.

Then you lack self-control
While I agree, this is true of basically the entire population (and thus things like behavioral economics is important).

RE: The Official Status Thread
Status: Had a 'Gloves' conversation with a coworker.
Does the image displayer we have on the website have events?
You mean does it trigger javascript things?
Yeah, can it tell when they change which of the images they are looking at?
It's been a long time since I've hooked anything to that, but yes. Why?
There are images in a set that you are only allowed to look at with a certain role. So I was going to change the contrast in the image displayer and disable the adjust buttons when they are looking at a disallowed image.
Why aren't you just putting in a holder image? As you are describing it you can still see the thumbnail of the image, or muck with the javascript hooks you are using, or just pull it down yourself.
I can change what images I give?
You have to tell the displayer what images to show, so yes you can say "use dummy image" for some of them.Though I'm a little sad that I don't get to see what they were trying to cobble together (different internal team so wouldn't need to support it).

Then drop out. I've never understood people going to college who aren't there for a love of learning.

"Christmas tree" sculpture
Congrats to whatever artist (though they are more a bullshitter than a "sculptor" or whatever they passed themselves off as) who convinced the approvers that was a christmas tree.

Guy at the teriyaki place gave me a great pedantic dickweed speech about how there's no such thing as "spicy" chicken teriyaki because if they use the spicy sauce, they're not using any teriyaki sauce.
If you work there then the fact that people don't know what teriyaki is could get annoying. Oh noes someone complained about an annoyance from their job to you.

If I see him there it's going to be trying out the game that he is going to be showing off. Also I've shown I'm going so if one guy yells at him, it won't be hard to guess who.

I found a spider on top of my car trunk at a gas station a couple of weeks ago and spent some time trying to get it off unhurt before going thru the car wash.
So it wasn't into BDSM then ?

There is someone standing out a ways that the bike pulls up to, why didn't they warn her? When setting things like that up, you make sure to yell at people if they go were they aren't supposed to be.

RE: Buying insurance... in a video game
Buying extra lives, which has been done in games pretty much since in-game currency was invented
Never played in an arcade before? Buying lives has been around a lot longer than that.
is a form of insurance
Not really, insurance is betting on the bad outcome to mitigate it. Paying to compensate/recover from a bad outcome is different. -
RE: IRS Announces Data Breach; 200K Taxpayers Affected
What they probably mean by "multi-factor" is the attacker needed your IRS site password and then answers for things like DOB, address, some kind of ID number, and such like. Which what many people think counts as multi factor, and so it is going the terms used in announcements.

RE: Moar downtime? who was playing with bots again?
When I was working in the US, most of my colleagues identified as being "German" or "Italian" or "Irish", despite the fact they (or, probably, any of their living relatives) had never been back to the "old country"
That mostly occurs because any family that has been in the states for a while is some form of ethnic mutt and so we use those identifiers as "majority from this area"/"most recent immigrants from that area". It's one of those things that means different stuff due to different assumed context.

RE: Two things I hate when it comes to UX
Why do you think it's bullshit?
I think he has said before that he objects to the data gathering in exchange for lowered prices (or non-raised prices as he probably puts it) is some kind of extortion (though I can't remember what hoops he jumped through/goal posts he shifted to make it different from avoiding website analytics stuff that someone mentioned in a previous argument about it). But this is vague memories so treat details as I'm lying.

Sandwich is the the general version of all those things. Hamburgers are sandwiches but not the other way. Actually here maybe this will work better to describe how this works:

{ }public class Hamburger : Sandwich
{ }

RE: The Official Funny Stuff Threadβ’
Yes, he is taking a shit. In a nativity scene.
from the wikipedia entry:
Accompanying Mary, Joseph, Jesus, the shepherds and company, the caganer is often tucked away in a corner of the model, typically nowhere near the manger scene.
So not what most think of as the nativity scene as just the manger is common in the states, not the whole town style they use.

RE: RAM is slower than HDDs! If you are an idiot, that is.
'slower' is string concatenation.
Yeppers. Though the not writing to disk for disk writing is a bigger issue than not using a string builder for the in memory version IMO.

RE: The Official Status Thread
Sorry, had an hour long conversation in regards to a guesstimate that the customer was questioning. I had based an estimate of something (a) on another project (b) that sounded really similar. The customer complained as some thing (c) had an estimate that was about 1/4 the size of (b) and was similar to (a). Then after this hour long multi person conversation an update to the estimation of A was accepted in like 5 minutes that was roughly newA = C/2 = 2B. Meaning that the hour long conversation should probably have been much shorter than an hour and I'm frustrated with those that caused it to take an hour.

Unfortunately they've been at it long enough that I'm starting to hear people think Google UIs are good and should be emulated.
For some of the "enterprise" things I have to use I wish the devs would copy Google UIs. They may be terrible but still a step up.

Maybe not such a bad idea if you track which you infected, then remove them from said list.
