Status: found out that we have more than 160 production machines running windows server 2003. This is going to add some wrinkles to scheduling work as EOL on that is July 14 and some of those machines are running things that apparently don't work on newer versions.

RE: The Official Status Thread
Holy...crap.
Apparently many of them are low on RAM and processor cores (like 512MB and one core) so upgrading things should be able to cut the number of machines drastically.
You have some work ahead of you
Basically an old version of an internal framework thingy doesn't handle newer versions properly so we finally have a reason that can't be blown off to spend time updating the version. But there is no way we are hitting the EOL deadline. -

First heard about this on Wait Wait..Don't tell me (on bluff the listener), but just saw a thing on time about it:

RE: 🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
This is the first I've ever heard of that.
Really? The difference is more pronounced when it shows up in older writing. I know you read a lot of history, do the books you read not include quotes (of written things)?

Begin detox.
For me the hardest part to break was habit of taking a step outside periodically/doing something while walking somewhere. So find something you can sink time into/something else to futz with while doing other stuff.

RE: The "l can't believe they had to say that" thread
I also saw something to effect of "made in factory that also handles nuts".
Great, good. Same production line? Same floor? Same galaxy? How does that matter?
This actually can matter to people depending on just how sensitive they are, some can be set off by a spec of dust drifting in the air over to thing they are eating. This isn't something that you can really measure due to how small scale it is and what it takes to actually prevent the small chance of it generally makes it too expensive to deal with. Thus the "in same building" warning to tell those that are sensitive enough that such levels are possible are warned off.
EDIT: hanzo by @CarrieVS with more filled out explanation.

"Should I run an svn update first?"
No, the change will magic itself onto your box. Srsly?
Don't know what kind of thing you work on, but for me that can be a valid question (change in what you are pulling data from vs. in the client).

RE: Two things I hate when it comes to UX
What the fuck are you talking about?
My memories of your complaints were this:
@blakeyrat said:"We can give you lower prices, but we don't fucking bother" is the message I get from loyalty cards.
But what they do is allow stores to run analytics on what things get bought together, by same people, and so on. In previous conversations I remember people comparing said analytics to web analytics due to you having worked in them to wind you up. Basically the argument is that allowing them to do better analysis saves them money thus giving you cheaper prices, rather than doing that doing that for everyone these lowered prices are given to those allowing said analytics (using the loyalty card). -

Me> Hey Billing software! Create Customer 123ABC
Billing Software> OK! Customer created. Their customer ID is ABC123
Me> Thanks! Create an order for CustomerID ABC123
It didn't do what you said, why are you thanking it? Alternatively for a different they are not outputting the actual ID but some 'cleansed' version that is inaccurate. Try what you actually asked for in the later steps, if that works then you know where to apply the .And hanzoed by @RaceProUK

do you really think that will work based on the blakey response he used?

RE: The Official Status Thread
The part that amused me most about that show was the couples with no children who thought that a 2000 square-foot house was impossibly small.
Never seen the show, but if kids are planned then the extra rooms could logically be said to be needed (but I'm guessing that wasn't the case based on complaints).

RE: 🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
Fifty Shades of Grey is about as shocking as a sports bra
Uh, among those in that community that is actually a pretty damning complaint (at least depending on what the phrasing was). The Dom/Sub set up in the book is apparently all kinds of off kilter compared to what it should be. Also the amount of bitching about it I've heard from family member in said community is annoying.

RE: Since when is IE the leading browser in international politics!?
Is there any actual rich country that does this?
No.
EDIT: US listed as 3.8% of GDP for 2013, others have higher but none that I'd call rich.

Lots of the US doesn't celebrate it, or at least not in a noticeable way (five teens/college kids doing something doesn't really count).

Wondering when it will come in so that I'm allowed to fix things that crashed said services (they are sitting marked as problematic in the task list of the process).

Bill 'em for the conversation.
Billing is set up as either estimated hours (dev work) or per piece of work done (production). So other than working meetings into estimates us in the dev section can't.

No no, the taxpayer info was gathered using info gotten from somewhere else. The info from somewhere else was enough to bypass the checks the IRS uses (which could be called multi-factor).

RE: The minor rants thread.
IIUC, Office Automation doesn't require a GUI
By my memory of trying to do things completely without a GUI (not my design) you still get the "pop up a dialog and wait" happening such that you need to completely kill things and restart the services/clients/whatever. Of course unattended screen with a dialog is basically the same thing, so maybe it was that, been years.
