Self-breaking software! I love this new concept, someone tell Atwood.
They're working on perfecting self-DoSing software at the moment, but they'll probably put it on the roadmap.

RE: Close call with an Acer laptop (or: never update your BIOS)
Memory: 4,00 GB (2,93 GB usable)
If I understand correctly, on a 32 bit architecture, only 4GB of RAM is addressable (unless PAE is active), so if you have other components which map to memory, such as graphics cards, they will use up some of the available address space. As such, the 2.93GB (in this case) would represent the limit of the memory which would be usable, no matter how much memory you installed.
Some or none of the above may apply to your situation.

RE: Web Service WTF
I hoped that it won't be necessary to point that tidbit out to the audiences here, so I went with the proper spelling and allowed for inference of my intention.
Was I wrong?
If you'd done a chubertdev and hidden the 'u' with a tiny font, you would have covered yourself against any confusion. You would also have successfully trolled me.

Unless you'd never heard of him because you're so old as to not have noticed anything happening in the 90s.... in which case, I'll get off your lawn.
Or help him to hobble off yours.

RE: Science!
I thought the BBC was supposed to have fairly high standards. If it's impossible to simplify something to the point that a lay person can understand it, making a completely inaccurate analogy isn't going to help anyone.

Or you could take this opportunity to learn a new language and write it in something that doesn't suck.
I still think shared Excel spreadsheets are the answer.

Also, reverse plumber could totally be some sort of code notation.

RE: Google Accounts
Are there angry bears? Can I punch bears with terrible but somehow amusing sound effects?
Minecraft works on Linux and has animals that you can punch. It doesn't have bears, but I'm sure there's a mod for that.
Failing that can I get to, say, run across rooftops with a hidden blade strapped to my arm whilst inside a fake form of the Matrix based on my ancestors' DNA?
Sounds very much like Sudoku to me.

RE: Just sharing a link to TRWTF for customer service
There is nothing wrong with using the history API. If you follow sane development practices (meaning each link when opened directly will go to the correct page) a script error from a missing history API won't really do any harm. It will error out, prevent you from preventing the event from bubbling up and just navigate to the page.
Indeed. In general, I write code that works with standard page requests, then add JavaScript code to improve the experience.
There are occasional times that I write pages that require JavaScript, but only in administrative sections of the site where I know that the environment can be controlled. An example might be allowing an administrator to drag and drop items to reorder them. I could write a fall back that would allow reordering using regular requests, but the interface would be so different to the JavaScript enabled version that it wouldn't be worth the extra effort.

Liked for "grote memmen". I don't speak German, but those words sound evocative.

Stay away from the XKCD forums. You only have to wait 5 minutes there...

RE: Benefits website
Filed under: I wanted to be a pedantic dickweed too, for once
Mission accomplished.
On a related note, I read a very interesting book that suggested (amongst other things) that gravity is actually a repulsive force which affects us roughly equally from all sides. Matter shields other matter from the gravitational push (more massive objects doing so more effectively), so the objects are pushed together. It also offers an explanation for why the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. The overall effect of the gravity is to push everything apart, even though locally, it seems to be attracting things together.
I don't know how it stands up to scientific scrutiny, but I like ideas that challenge our most basic presumptions.

It's not here, but that would actually be really useful...

You're going to have to prioritise and let those deadlines slip.

What happened to that PHP hammer?

On subatomic level most of the universe is nothing but empty space.
And on that level, what is matter really? Just standing waves and forces between them?

RE: Very useful error message from Pervasive DI
Error writing to file or table inΒ Form_Activate(rnstatus.frm) (25508)
The data you are trying to upload might be corrupt..Check for data validations, duplicate key values, special characters etc in data. Try to upload the same via data loader to a test area and check on error file to identify where the error exist.
Check page 59 from the following link to set the log files to include the errors and go the directory of log file see the content to know about the error.

RE: Licence? What licence? All your links are belong to us!
If someone uploads illegal material to a forum that is one thing. In the case stated by tuffty however the forum software itself would download illegal material on to its own server.
Does that really make any difference? The server is still "hosting and distributing" the materials illegally.
I'm not saying that it doesn't make a difference; I'm just intrigued as to whether laws tend to draw a distinction. Certainly YouTube got into trouble for people uploading copyrighted material to its site.
