RE: Discussion of NodeBB Updates
@ben_lubar It was the WTF Bites thread. Were there like 2 days worth of posts deleted between earlier this afternoon and a few minutes ago?

all thanks to the "rotate screen" button on "home row" (what's that thing called again?)
That sounds like some Huawei thing. The closest I can think of is the auto-rotate/lock rotation switch in quick settings

RE: The Official Status Thread
@Gąska TIL. I've never seen that since I just keep auto rotate turned on.

RE: Discussion of NodeBB Updates
@ben_lubar That makes sense, but I had it happen while logged in. However I haven't had it happen again; other threads are behaving normally. Maybe it was a temporal bug

RE: The game glitches thread
@blakeyrat Is the Youtube online video editor still a thing? If it is maybe you could do some no-op in it and force it to re-encode the video from the original source. Assuming they keep the original upload, and that they do anything in a sane way, of course.

Well, the Linux print server is being developed by Apple.
CUPS is the standards-based, open source printing system developed by Apple Inc. for macOS® and other UNIX®-like operating systems.
No wonder installing my network printer was dead easy and very un-Linux-like in Linux.

RE: WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else
monitors sometimes not working
I sometimes have a similar issue with my main work laptop (when docking at the office, so not for the past few months). At work I've got a dock hooked up to two monitors. Most of the time this works like it's supposed to: dock the laptop, image appears on both monitors, arranged like
[ 1 ][ 2 ]
. But sometimes, it fails to recognize one or both of the monitors, and refuses to do so until after restarting. Additionally, sometimes this also comes with total non-responsiveness to any keyboard or mouse/trackpad input when docked. Thankfully everything still works when undocked, and I can (grumble and) restart as needed. -
RE: WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else
@Zecc I have many of my day to day notes in unsaved text docs that my text editor preserves across sessions. But a while ago (a year or two?) it lost all the contents for some reason and the only things preserved were the files I had actually saved.

RE: Discussion of NodeBB Updates
As of this update it seems like infini-scroll is breaking more often than it did before. I don't know what happens, but it seems like every once in a while some switch flips and at that point topics and topic lists will not load anything past the initial load, until I refresh the browser.

Indeed, it is unusual in that it has a reverse tolerance - frequent use requires less for the same effect.
I haven't heard that about THC, and anecdotally have heard the opposite, that frequent users sometimes take "tolerance breaks"

OTOH, I can do much less with my browser while offline (apart from reading the page currently displayed) and I haven't seen any browser that actually notifies me when I'm offline. There isn't even a notification icon or anything, it's just the browser waiting and waiting and sometimes timing out.
Chrome has the dinosaur page (and endless runner game) that IME shows up right away if Chrome detects that you have no internet connection

Wrong. It's configured to use the platform-native line endings by default.
Not according to the page you linked. That says you have to set it.
I seem to recall that the Git installer (for Windows) lets you set the default behaviour to keep line endings or convert them on checkout.

RE: The Official Status Thread
Status: Finally updated my Macbook, mostly because the new version of Calibre wouldn't install on my old OS. This allowed me to update Chrome to the latest version and stop using it because instead of only sometimes using the dedicated GPU, it always forced it on. Now I'm using Opera (which also wouldn't install on the old OS) and unsurprisingly it's way better.
:fa_pencil_square_o[Edit]:: However I lost iStat Menu, so now my menu bar is missing a few things that I liked from that. Maybe I'll buy the new version... later.

I get the certanty that either the cables are in fact rated for what they are rated for
I just checked the specs for the cable I got and it's bog-standard USB 2.0, 5V 3A max. It's plenty for what I use it for (to slowly charge the Switch in portable mode away from the dock), and for fast charging I've got the dock with AC adapter that it came with. I doubt even the crappiest no-name cable would break a sweat at 5V 3A.

I'm not sure how you would expect that to be, unless using e-ink?
That would be a decent low-power way to do it, or maybe LCD/TFT without a backlight.

RE: Seemingly Unrelated Topic 3: Blatant Flamebait
Someone I follow on Twitch tried to do a multi-layered VM like that. He got as far as Vista inside Win8 inside Win10, but couldn't get any deeper than that. Also, I forget what exactly caused it, but IIRC some seemingly mundane action inside Vista made the W8 VM crash.

We are Costco shoppers, and I both hate shopping and hate running out of things so I unintentionally hoarded long before any of this was a potential issue. I usually buytoiket paper and paper towels 2+ Costco cases at a time and keep it in the basement in our storage room.
City-center apartment dweller here. If I were to buy two mid-sized packs of toilet paper at once, my apartment would likely start looking crowded.
Besides, the closest store is across the street. I basically carry everything by hand or with a small bag in a single go. Even a single pack makes things awkward to carry. The store also has limited space, so they don't even carry the really large packages.
I used to live in a similar situation (crappy small apartment next door to a couple giant grocery stores) but I always had loads of toilet paper, shampoo, soap etc. The stores would always have sales, and living alone I didn't use very much

It's a read (or "interacted with") indicator for the notification, with the full one being unread, and you can click on it to toggle the status.

@mott555 Currently I've got a Google spreadsheet that I haven't updated in ages, and a text file that I keep open and add my bills, due dates, etc as I get and pay them
-
RE: Youtube vs ad blockers
@HardwareGeek They're both useless, for sure. But what sets this apart in my mind is that you get exactly what you paid for: a piece of paper that tells you you're special. A scam, on the other hand, purports to sell you something (a 2 TB flash drive, some tech support service, a Gucci handbag, etc) but instead you get something worse (a 2 GB flash drive with tampered firmware or a purse stamped with "Goochy"), outright malicious (a remote access session where someone across the world steals your money), or nothing at all.
