The point of high-level languages is to hide dumb low-level mistakes, not expose them.

RE: %^&^*%*&^% Git.
I don't really know VSTS or whatever your environment is, but I doubt Git itself is popping up UI windows.
I bet the very thought itself is sending shivers down Beardo mcLinux's spine.Rather, I bet the .gitconfig defines a program (perhaps as the credential.helper?) which is responsible for the rogue UI.
Go find it and yell at it instead. -

RE: Security by obscurity fails again
Some guy said in that site:
Ok, this bypasses ASLR, but by itself it cannot actually exploit anything.
For that a memory bug in the browser is still needed.
Solution: Fix the browser to avoid such bugs e.g. by using safe programming languages such as Rust? How'd that get 16 downvotes and counting?
Switching the entire browser code (or at least most of it) to use a safe programming language would be a huge boon to security. After that is done, ASLR and its bypassing should not matter.

@AlexMedia said in Big list of webapps masquerading as native:
I want devs to stop pretending that their apps are special snowflakes that deserve a unique and distinctive UI, instead they should adhere to the standard of the platform on which they run.
And because I often switch between Linux and Windows, I like the programs to have the same UI in both, because then I don't have to learn the program twice.
So apps should both behave identically on different platforms and behave differently on each platform as per its conventions. Got it.

RE: New from Samsung: Fire and explosions
The New York Times gives us a tantalizing look behind the scenes at Samsung, saying the post-recall testing process was hindered by a desire to not create a paper trail. "It did not help that the hundreds of Samsung testers trying to pinpoint the problem could not easily communicate with one another," the Times said. "Fearing lawsuits and subpoenas, Samsung told employees involved in the testing to keep communications about the tests offline—meaning no e-mails were allowed, according to the person briefed on the process."The system works!

I've posted that exact same sentiment like 47 times here. Why do you think I'm a body snatcher?
Because the real @blakeyrat has posted "like 47 times here" the sentiment that command lines are horrible and GUIs are the way to write a user interface.
/me throws garlic at bodysnatcher!Blakey
Because Blakey has ragequit the thread, I'll answer for him (though not in his style - can't copy that):
"command lines are horrible and GUIs are the way to go" and "command lines are user interfaces. Programs should be using them to talk to users" are not contradictory sentiments.
(Unless you misread the second sentiment by putting stress on "them" instead of on "talk to users").

RE: Am I just a very bad coder or is this an abuse of C++ ?
Worse than that, the code isn't even valid C#!
You don't have a template keyword in C#, you just write class MyClass<T>.
And you can't have non-type template parameters, idiot.
Moreover, what the hell is up with GetBounds () and GetWidth (). There is such a thing as a property, you know? Use it!
And why would you write a 'public' before the class inheritance? Are you on drugs?
And I'm not even sure what's going on in the constructor. Also, the code doesn't use LINQ, so automatic 0/10 from me.

RE: Go 1.11: run Go in your web browser without compiling it to JavaScript
As a result of the addition of the new GOOS value "js" and GOARCH value "wasm", Go files named *_js.go or *_wasm.go will now be ignored by Go tools except when those GOOS/GOARCH values are being used. If you have existing filenames matching those patterns, you will need to rename them.
I have no words.

RE: Re: go Away()
The core point is that errors should be errors and warnings should be warnings - the compiler shouldn't raise an error just because you're Doing it Wrong.
It's indeed most annoying when you're making small temporary changes to test stuff. E.g. I often temporarily delete, replace or add a block of code to debug & understand tricky issues. This makes Jeffier compilers start pouring out errors about unused variables and unreachable code which I then have to waste my time fixing (and later reverting again), even though the compiler could've well compiled the code as-is with just a warning.

RE: TFW your SQL queries only compile on American computers
This is what happens when a programming language hides locale-specific functionality under a generic-seeming API.
I prefer bugs such as "your app doesn't output numbers correctly for my locale" to "your app is completely broken [on my locale]". -
RE: What is `z-order`s?

Decent styling languages wouldn't completely mess up all z-order by design when you change an element's opacity or transform. -

RE: TOP 0
Because if it didn't and you wanted to get the top N records, where N is a parameter that might be 0, you'd be rightly angry with the sql language for raising an error there.

What he said, and I kid you not, was: "So, here's what we need you to do. When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself, 'I'm going to be happy at work today.'"

The next step is finding and removing any obstacles that might prevent that from happening, such as - for example - the expectation to work unpaid overtime. -

RE: The never type
@The_Quiet_One They give a good example in the article itself:
function fail(msg) { throw new Exception(msg); } // actual function can be more complicatedSince it returns never, the compiler allows you to call it at the end of another function without returning anything afterwards.
Similarly, if you call it in another function and then continue to do other stuff, the compiler will alert you to the bug - you have unreachable code. -
