The Affirmation Thread :fa_fire_extinguisher:

Okay. So we're negative here a lot. It comes with the territory. Buuuuuuut-- sometimes that negativity can get a bit too pervasive. It can sometimes leak into your every thought and every feeling, to the point where it becomes way too easy to fall into an overly-critical mindset. You get to the point where you start being overly-critical of yourself, and get stuck in a sort of self-hate spiral.
So here's a thread to help undo some of that! Time for some positive affirmations! INB4 the "I'm Good Enough..." SNL skit.
Rules:
- No . We've got a whole category for that.
- Say something nice about yourself. Anything.
- A suggestion rather that a rule: try to avoid merit-based affirmations, or things reliant on external recognition. "I'm a good runner" is good. "I won a trophy for running" is less good, because you're still relying on EXTERNAL validation
- No "buts". Don't undercut your self-affirmation and self-sabotage. "I'm a good running" is good. "I'm a good runner, for a lazy slob" or "I'm a good runner, but my technique needs improvement" is not good. The only one making that judgement is you. Don't do it, be positive!
- You are more than welcome to compliment someone else, by name, tag or otherwise. =)
I'll start:
The garden wall I built looks really nice. The new soil is almost completely in (got a yard-bag of it delivered), and I'm doing a great job (and getting lots of exercise) shoveling the soil.
-
I turned around a new view for a codebase I've never seen before, done by a guy whose style I find hard to read, in under a day. I might actually be good at this
-
So this is the peen-stroke thread? I'm down with that.
I can alter source programs to do things not originally intended fairly effectively.
-
Challenge accepted!
I reverse engineer nicely.

I left some really nasty brown streaks in the toilet bowl today.

Hey, so long as you don't want us to interpret it (think tea leaves)...

I'm a good dad and a supportive and loving husband

My intentions are mostly good.

I help young boys mature and develop good character (while having fun!) by being a Cub Scout leader.

Started a new job last week and it's going pretty nicely. Getting along with people, I feel like I've caught up to speed pretty quickly, so it's nice.
-
My current job is great and will look amazing on my resume when I get bored in a few months/years.
Also, I'm very good at listening to other people's problems and making them feel better, even if it's just temporary.

Helping the new guy settle in at work, actually feeling like a team lead.

I wrote a processor in VHDL and about 2/3rds of an OS in C.
(both are actually pretty easy once you understand how they work, but they still sound really cool)
-
I've written code that I am genuinely proud of.
-
I made a really good meal solely from frozen leftovers / stragglers in the freezer. Pumpkin coconut curry soup, and salmon with a honey lemon sauce. Food budget, go!
-
I know this is but I haven't strangled my BA today. I'm very proud of that fact right now.
-
i can make almost anyone laugh out loud within ten minutes of meeting.

I read that as SQL Growlith. I had no idea he was in IT.

In the theme of the thread...
I finally understood the relationship of things in order to display the correct results after struggling with this for a few days.I probably still have a 50/50 chance of having it backwards (but that's easy enough to fix.)
X moves from A to B. From A it is a referral and to B it is a transfer (or the other fucking way I don't know).
I was trying to get each A and B and union them but get getting one or the other messed up.
-
Despite my debts, I still have a 671 credit score :D And the worst mark is credit card utilization, which will come down easily as I pay it off. I should be able to get back above 700 within a few months
-
I enjoyed my internship and fixed bugs and legaciness and refactored stuff while progressing with my task. (And they were happy too.)
In the past year I've befriended and/or dated more girls than I've ever did. I did not start a relationship but that's a good thing too.

One of my coworkers complimented me on my beard.
🙆

One of my coworkers was amazed that the component I built was delivered in 2 days when she thought it would take another week or more on top - and there was only one bug found, owing to a discrepancy between different stages of dev instance and their DB schemas.
-
I successfully retained 5% of last night's dream content!

I fought against entropy today!

I miss @blakeyrat

I am proud of the system architecture and the design choices that I and my colleague made, while on my previous project.

This week I managed to send out several job applications and attend an interview without being a nervous wreck

Everybody at work thinks I'm a hot shit coder. And I kind of am, within reason.
Also I make a good meat + potato pie.

And finally fully 100% finished an average-sized game for the first time in a while.

I'm still trying to beat the final level of Super Mario 3D world.
But I finished two old games today, which had been sitting in my Steam library for years, and I finally managed to complete all achievements in a third game.

At 4am I learned:
- I really can't skip dinner if I want to sleep through the night. It was unintentional (my teeth hurt), but still
- It's not that I'm bad at costuming. It's that I rush through because I'm in pain. My unexplored belief that people who are good at things can rush and still get a good product is unrealistic; more likely, they take their time. Therefore, I'm skilled at costuming.
Go me, I learned things!

I finished reading a book (actually the second book in a duology). I used to be a voracious reader, then at some point "reading so many pages is a INSURMOUNTABLE MONUMENTAL TASK". All part of that self-sabotaging line of thinking that makes you not want to do things you enjoy you feel bad, so you feel like not wanting to do things you enjoy, so you feel bad... etc.
Bowl of Heaven and Shipstar, by Larry Niven and Edward Lerner. Good "Explore a Big Thing" adventure.
Time to see what else is in my to-read queue.

I love to optimize slow code!
Currently (based on profiling) have reduced processing time from ~420s down to ~100s.
-
I love to optimize slow code too. A couple months ago I fixed up a compiler that was taking over 8 hours to build a (admittedly excessively large) codebase and got it down to under 6 minutes through careful application of caching. (And that was the low-hanging fruit. Profiling suggests there's still another 2-3 minutes worth of opportunities for improvement, but fixing that would take more time than I'm willing to invest at the moment.)

I made a good hiring recommendation.
I delivered more functionality this week than expected and everyone told me I made a good job of the new company website.

I made a new button:
That was requested a year ago and finally got rid of enough backlog to complete. Took a day (ish) with spot testing for WOMM validation. Also made this button:
Work on items that were not your own, if you had permissions (previously it only worked with items that were legitimately yours, not with items you imported but didn't create. It's confusing).
