Targeted advertising fail

@The_Quiet_One Their earliest videos were more earnest about honest critique but they found very quickly that being asshats dinging for shits and giggles got better reactions, so they do that a lot more.
Praise the almighty algorithm!

Yes, Amazon, these items are very similar...
-
Ah yes, the beautiful sounds of C-Sections !

Targeted job recruitment fail — he missed his target by thousands of miles and tens of thousands of dollars.
I'm an engineer with 30+ years of experience. I'm not going to move halfway across the country to work a hell desk at ~1/4 the market rate for my experience.

I kinda probably should start looking for what that is for yours truly.

We already know you won't even move to your desk to work

Hey. I'm at my desk right now.
to work

I liked this video because I didn't like it....
-
@Tsaukpaetra They did pay you for your effort, though, right?
-
@HardwareGeek said in Targeted advertising fail:

It's rather lower than that. "$25 - $20" is only $5 (per hour), and I think that's a little on the low side for even the most entry level of jobs...

How many years will it be until Google understands that I told it I could care less about sports?!?

: Why know you're a man and men always care about sports. So you're lying and we'll continue doing this.
and: Oh he's trying to limit advertising. Just ignore that preference, it's not allowed.
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in Targeted advertising fail:
I could care less
Ah, that means you do care, at least a little.
-

He could, but he can't be bothered.

This was a LinkedIn ad on my Facebook. It had my LinkedIn profile pic, so it knew who I was. In spite of having a rather mundane career in software engineering with not as much as secret clearance on my resume, it thought I'd do well with this job.
LinkedIn is still failing on this. From today's email:
This is wrong in so many ways, some of them -worthy.

@HardwareGeek another instance for the classic...

Clearly you're not thinking outside the box.
-
@LaoC no, but the FBI is thinking outside the circle.

Speaking of CSS, apparently this site wants that particular Google ad to be in with the article text.
-
Just received junk snail-mail about "build your business with Shopify". Addressed to my son's online gaming pseudonym.

And to think this thread's title is could have been "Advertising placement fail".

Steam...I think you're drunk?
-
@Benjamin-Hall You have no idea how much storey there is in those games!

I haven't played many of these "pretend to have a job" games, but I will say Papers, Please was more fun than it had any right to be.

I was (unexpectedly?) astonishingly bad at that game...

Posting about it here seems to indicate that he can be bothered.

status: looks like I'm being a/b tested again. WTF happened with my fucking time page?!?
Everything is yuuuuge!
-
-
Ah yes, long time car fan. I have totally into the roads.
-
status: I guess my age indicates I'm thinkin' dominoes?

But you did click it anyways, right?
-
@Tsaukpaetra Reminds me of 2006-ish when Adwords was just released. People would just bid on every single word in the English language and add "for sale" at the end. This resulted in hilariously inappropriate ads like "black people for sale" and "nuclear bombs for sale."
-
@The_Quiet_One eBay seems to have resumed doing this recently. I've seen some ridiculous things "for sale" when doing random searches.
-
@Zerosquare said in Targeted advertising fail:

No, but on cursory glance it looks like some kind of onlyfans knockoff?
-
status: going to a channel's page may not show only videos from that channel anymore.
Useful.
-
-
status: goddamn you Google, you already know to stop showing me these ads, do you really have so few advertisers that even so you'll still show them to me despite my preferences?
I don't care about these things! Give me my personalization as promised!
-
Status: I already clicked this on my phone. Guess it didn't apply to the Website version.
-
status: ummmmmmmm........
Not that I don't like a clean ass, but.... I'm almost tempted to proceed into the advertisement.

TIL through a tiny text link that you can search other ads by the same publisher!
Sadly I still can't figure out dat

It's night ass, just at a different time.

The Algorithm moves in mystery, beyond the realm of mortal understanding.
Also, we don't want to know whatever it is that Google knows about you.

I've posted screenshots of what it thinks it knows about me (in the context of advertising). Trust me, a crayon muncher is likely to be more accurate.

Pretty sure the algorithm is "he who pays the most".
