Remote desktop sharing for support
-
I've decided that I need to install some kind of remote desktop sharing software on my mom's computer so I can help her. She frequently calls me since I'm the easiest of my siblings to get ahold of and be able to help her generally. Except we live on opposite sides of the continent, so it's difficult to get her to explain what's going on, etc.
She runs Windows 10, I'm on Linux. I haven't even really started looking. Figured it would be faster to ask here. I don't mind paying for something, but free would definitely be a feature.

@boomzilla Try AnyDesk: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AnyDesk
It is multiplatform and free, if you don't mind having a random (but unique) connection ID.

I'm using Teamviewer for that. It's also free for private use and is available on all platforms.
You can register which allows you to have a permanent contact list with automatic login credentials for the remote computer if you wish it so. You also do not get spam from them for registering.

Just use one of the existing rootkits on the box.

@boomzilla AnyDesk is nice in that the download is up front & centre on the home page and can be run directly without having to install anything – Makes it a lot easier to help someone who phones out of the blue but isn't technical enough to be comfortable with installs.
TeamViewer is good but sooner or later you'll fall foul of its piss-poor 'commercial use' detection which happened to me. You then have to jump through hoops to convince them it's being used for personal stuff, but they don't promise it won't happen again so instead I invoked and found something else.

Yeah. So long as it's not used very often or for very long, it's usually pretty lenient.

Weird, I've not run into that yet.

I've only ever used TeamViewer through an employer who had a commercial license and a couple of times while fucking with scammers, so haven't run into commercial use detection. It's pretty user friendly in terms of getting the other party available to connect to and works fine

This is the first time I've ever heard of this. TeamViewer is pretty much the de-facto thing to grab up for this kind of thing. I would still go with a real RAT though.

@boomzilla RealVNC?
If you had Windows and a Microsoft account, you could just use Quick Assist, which is just part of Win10.

Yeah, that's cool, but also right out for being convenient for me to use.
