@HardwareGeek
Kudos for the bike packing

@Luhmann In reality, my bike is a "sport-touring" model, which means it lacks attachment points for front panniers. That, in turn, means I have never done any actual touring with it.
It's also almost 30 years old and has never had significant maintenance; it's never had bearings cleaned and relubricated, and some original rubber and plastic parts have exceeded their useful lifespans. It's not actually rideable at the moment. It wouldn't take much to make it rideable, but it really should have some more serious maintenance.

Oh, there's a topic about this in the look-at-me category, might as well annoy everyone with my presence (and parenthetical sentences).
I ran the city 5K two years ago and signed up to do it again in 5 weeks. Haven't really trained much for it, besides what I've been doing anyway, but since last time I was just barely above 30 minutes I've set myself the goal to beat that.
5K shouldn't really be too hard, right? I'm a superficially healthy 30-something with 75kg at 1.83m (165lbs, 6', for you left-pondians), but a lazy couch-potato lacking exercise and muscles (the 75kg sounds better than it is, with a normal amount of muscle it'd be a lot more, I'm basically skinny-fat).
Besides some swimming which I'm handling pretty well without much exhaustion, I've been going to this weekly fitness group semi-regularly last year, whenever I'm not sick / have a cold (which has been happening way too often, unfortunately). However, that makes me feel completely exhausted after just 5-10 minutes. Been thinking I might want to check my heart rate while exercising, maybe something is not completely healthy after all and I need to take it slower. Oh yeah, I'm also a self-diagnosed hypochondriac, so when I get stitches in my chest I'm not sure if it's of no concern and I was just breathing wrong for a bit, or if I'm about to die of a heart attack any minute (you know the Kurt Cobain quote that just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they'e not after you).So, I'm kind of interested in getting one of these newfangled fitness tracker thingies. But, as I said, I only really care for the heart rate (or pulse assuming there's a one to one correspondence). My phone can already do GPS tracking and I don't need any of these smartwatch features like texting integration or whatever. So an Apple / Samsung / whatever watch would be overpriced and unnecessary.
Something I found in the shops that looks reasonably priced, small and with lots of features is the "Fitbit Charge 3" wristband. I almost bought that but then I saw the ratings on Amazon where overwhelmingly mediocre, lots of negative reviews. And complaints that it's basically counting steps while you're sleeping or at your desk. With that (lack of) precision I'm doubtful that any pulse it measures at my wrist while I'm exercising (and sweating, moving) will be meaningful, either.Anyone got a good recommendation for a simple and reliable tracker like that? The about 100-200€ price range is fine, I just don't care to shell out insane amounts of money for a "smart watch".

Maxed out around 42km/h today, but only because I wanted my daughter to slow the fuck down ...
-
@topspin
If you want to register heart rate during exercise only get a Bluetooth chest band. Way more accurate then the wrist based systems

Oh! Speaking of, let's measure the walk-peen!
Oh look, being on my feet for literally 78 percent of the last 4 days straight and.... Apparently that's hardly the recommended daily step count.
Apparently distance is exactly proportional to steps. A totally fair and accurate assumption, I'm sure...
Seems legit. I did ascend via stairs quite a bit...
Almost managed that 6 in 6-2-1...
My resting heart rate has risen. Likely because I wasn't resting, but that's anecdotal.
And yet, despite the apparent 5x increase in activity, no increase in calorie consumption was observed...
Bullshit, smoke, and mirrors.

If this is actually the case, you could always supplement it with fasting like I do.

Well I think its basing calorie usage on whether or not I told it I'm exercising, the apparent steps, and heart rate (which seems to have a nominal Max of 137? Gotta be more watchful). So, if I'm "not exercising" I'm not burning calories, right?
-
Woo!
-
@Tsaukpaetra from what I've read, a RHR of 70 is pretty good! I have no idea what mine is…I'll try to check it tomorrow morning I guess
-
@bb36e
Nice! Now do that distance in one hour!
-
@Tsaukpaetra
137 active? Or relatively active, like climbing a few stairs or under acute stress is normal but it shouldn't be that high during normal desk work

An average day where I sit for most of it.

Sports don't help that much with mass reduction - the bigger part would indeed be a diet change.
I've had a good experience with the interval diet - it basically works by you not eating calorie-rich foods outside certain periods of time.
For instance, the way I do it, the first real meal is at 1pm and then I'm "allowed to eat" until 7pm (i.e. a six-hour window). Outside that window I'm allowed only water, coffee and other (unsweetened) drinks low on calories.
Worked fine for me - I'm not even hungry outside those windows anymore.
Of course - as with all things dietary - your mileage may vary. But it's an easy method which puts it above the rest - because inside the window you may eat whatever you like, no restrictions save for the time limit.

58 here. Though I can get it down to 50 if I'm really relaxed.

So I did get this Fitbit charge thing, negative reviews aside, as it’s not too expensive. I can wear it as a watch anyway, so what should go wrong. The criticism is justified, the step counter seems not very accurate. The counter for floors is a military-strength random number generator.
I checked it one time and it said 11 floors, which seemed a bit much but I hadn’t kept count. Then I walked up 3 floors and it didn’t change at all.Whatever, that’s not what I was interested in, anyways. It does count heart rate and even automatically detects when you exercise, which is nice. Overall, it’s a nice gimmick to have.
I’m not sure how good the heart rate monitor is while exercising (as I can’t verify it), it spiked at 172 for me after ten minutes and then averaged between 140-150. For the resting heart rate, I did manually count it several times and it was quite accurate.
Resting heart rate seems to average around 50 (and sleeping rate drops to 40). The app says that is "excellent", but I’m not sure if it’s not a bit low.
-
@topspin I found that it often lost track of my HR when I was running, but for weightlifting etc it might retain accuracy

Apparently I'm just not exercising hard enough. Or not moving frantically enough. Or something.
Or maybe I'm just the Hulk and I'm always burning fat....

@topspin I have to say, seeing
herzfrequenz
makes me thinkherTz frequency
, which seems redundant. But then, I don't speak German. And isStart
a properly translated word?Oh, nice heart rate btw.
-
@Benjamin-Hall Herz is heart (obviously), so the whole word translates to heart rate. But it‘d be kinda funny to measure Herzfrequenz in Hertz, then usually it’d be around 1. Start is the same in English and German, besides the usual German uppercasing all nouns.
Yeah, I felt it was a bit high.

Stepped on the scale tonight and it showed I had lost 40+ lbs since I last weighed myself.
Turns out it needed new batteries.

Status: Apparently FitBit logged itself out over a week ago, with no warning or notice. Was wondering why it said I was 70% less active in the weekly report...
Wonderful, don't you love tech?
Edit: Luckily the fitbit unit itself seems to have kept the data, so eventually (apparently two hours later) the sync completed and apparently I took a hot air balloon ride (or something. I dismissed the notification and now I can't find it in the app proper, so whatever). Yaayyy.....

Made it back to the treadmill yesterday after several months off. I managed 1.5 miles in 13:something, and had to stop because I almost blacked out. Lots and lots of PVCs and mild dizziness the rest of the evening. My heart seems to be operating normally today, but I feel like I got hit by a truck while coming down sick.

I got drug back in to this thread due to a @obeselymorbid necro upvote notification.
Earlier this week I was on a webinar where I was asked to share my screen in order to be walked through an integration. In my bookmarks bar was this bookmarklet and when we were all done with what we needed to do the guy said:
"I have to ask, what is 'Kill Sticky'?"
"Oh, that. I guess I should be careful when sharing my screen, you never know what might pop up. It is a bookmarklet that kills the annoying sticky headers that some webpages have."Which then lead in to me explaining what bookmarklets were, what they do and how to set them up at which point he shared his screen with me again and I walked him through setting that one up for him on his machine because those headers also annoy him.

So, the advice from a professional seems to pay off.
Background: Basically, since I can remember I had serious problems running longer distances (i.e. more than 1 km), not for the lack of endurance but because my legs would begin to hurt as hell to the point where I wouldn't be able to lift the front of my feet off the ground. Normally, if you walk or run you'll try to sort of roll off your feet - I cannot do that after a short while, leading to a more "stompy" motion. Which is also more exhausting.
Went to various doctors who couldn't really find a problem - x-rays yielded no problems, my nerves are conducting at above average speeds, there are no obvious problems to be found through the usual diagnostic apparatus.So I get the advice to do a runner's analysis - basically, someone films me while running from various angles, coupled with some markers (i.e. low-tech version of motion capturing). Did so, he didn't find anything wrong with my way of running either. But he did have an idea of what might causing the issues - basically, both Tibialis Anterior tendons are the root cause of the issue.
He proposed the following: A pair of proper running shoes, a pair of specially fitted inlays for those shoes and a training regimen which consists of alternating between 300 meters running and 300 meters walking.
Three weeks ago I began following that regimen in earnest (always leavin two days of recuperation in between). The first two times I literally had to hobble home after half a round around the nearby lake (it's a 4.2 km round trip). Today only the last kilometer was somewhat painful. Maybe I can begin to increase the running distances at the end of the month (nevermind of thinking of managing to complete two rounds around the lake!)
