Why did they pay?

Bernie often receives some type of emails, with a subject line like "Security Alert. Your account was compromissed".
In the text, the author makes some bold statements:
As you may have noticed, I sent you an email from your account.
This means that I have full access to your device.
I can see everything on your screen, turn on the camera and microphone, but you do not know about it.
I also have access to all your contacts and all your correspondence.
I made a video showing how you satisfy yourself in the left half of the screen, and in the right half you see the video that you watched.
With one click of the mouse, I can send this video to all your emails and contacts on social networks.
If you want to prevent this,
transfer the amount of $... to my bitcoin address
If I find that you have shared this message with someone else, the video will be immediately distributed.
Best regards!Well, since it's Bitcoin the guy wants to get, we can easily trace some transactions. After all, the Distributed Transaction Leger of Bitcoin is public.
With a freshly received email, that's not very interesting: there are no transactions on that wallet yet. So let's try an older one: 1H1K8MfLEJgjCCfDEkTJmv9GJjD3XzEFGR.
Following the link, you'll see a large number of payments towards that wallet, all worth around $1000 now. And you'll see one (or a few) larger withdrawals. Let's follow them. Just click on the link for 347R4J5Pemmn38oPgptpM25BPuhiBzALYH where the guy transferred some $17,000 to, There, the amount was split and sent to two different accounts. And so on.
On some occasion, Bernie stumbled upon such an account with more than $100,000 on it, e.g. like this one.
Yeah, sending those emails seem to be a well-paid job.Oh, by the way, Bernie is still waiting for seeing such a nice video of him watching videos on his computer...

Before you ask:
-
@Zecc NSFW

@Zecc Yes, something like that, I guess. But I am not fully sure if the guy really forgot to record the clock on my computer... That could reveal what I actually did when I was expected to work from my home office.

With one click of the mouse, I can send this video to all your emails and contacts on social networks.Would be amazing if they could do this based off: 1) I don't have a webcam attached to the computer I watch most porn on. 2) I watch mainly photos, not videos. 3) And if they somehow would manage to make such a video, I don't have that many contacts and I'm sure at least a couple of them would just be happy to see such a video.

You fell out of your role there.

so far I haven't gotten any interesting videos of myself playing with myself.
Only boring ones?

Let me quote from some of those emails:
I want to say - you are a BIG pervert. Your fantasy is shifted far away from the normal course!
-

I just ignore them, so far I haven't gotten any interesting videos of myself playing with myself
And I guess the other way round holds also true, despite the author's claim:
I guarantee you that I will not disturb you again after payment! This is the word of honor hacker.
But I won't challenge that either.

I can neither confirm nor deny the accuracy of that statement~

I wonder if you can trace if any of the bitcoin drops flow to the same wallet later, and if there are any duplicate "donations" to the drops.
-
Guess these email scammers operate at too high volume to generate a separate wallet for each victim.
-
On a related note, I've gotten emails that displayed both my password (for that site) and my email. They were slightly more interesting for the PII (and, of course, they threatened me with spamming my porn habits, and wanted some bitcoin), but all it meant was that some site's password file had been taken. Depressing, but common, and that site didn't have any other interesting info about me, anyway.

That does happen. Just follow the links given in my original message. That's why I asked "Why did they pay?" - because I can see that some people did pay, and that the amounts gathered by the scammers exceeds $100,000.

They use the same wallet for many victims - as proofed by the bitcoins sent to those wallets.
A victim could be identified by the combination of wallet and amount - every email I received stated a different amount, so I guess they use the combination.Of cause, when you paid, you won't be bothered by the same scammer again.
Except, of course, by his competitors:Sorry to bother you with this issue again. As you know, some bad guy hacked your computer and transferred some interesting split screen videos to some server. He asked you for a small monetary compensation for the small social favor of not sharing those videos.
But, I must tell you, that was not me whom you paid the amount of $... on (date/time). It was a competitor of mine, whom I found active on your computer, too. And he was faster with sending the message to you.
*Now I want to ask you again. Also I created such an interesting video, and might share it with your contacts. Please sent $... to my wallet ..."

I replied to one of those scam emails and the guy paid me 0.1BTC to put a bit of tape over my camera.

True enough, I need to bring back variety to the thread...

This time, the email author included a new offer:
If you want to get proof, answer "Yes!" and resend this letter to youself.
And I will definitely send your video to your any 14 contacts. But, I guess, that won't work, and I won't receive that video.
