Blakeyrat has to send a letter to a bank, a tweet story

Something I didn't mention on Twitter, if you unplug your external monitor while the "print envelope" modal dialog is open, Word effectively locks-up. (I was carrying my laptop to the printer.) It won't respond to input because there's a modal open, but the modal doesn't appear in the taskbar so there's no way to move it back on-screen.
For those of you who claim I never complain about Microsoft products.

The trick in situations like this is to show up at the post office completely unprepared and uninformed. Just tell the clerk what you want done, give them the raw documents and basically make it their problem to figure everything out, so they can get the line moving.
At least that seems to be working for the people ahead of me in the queue EVERY FUCKING TIME.

I asked him what he meant by "Overnight Mail" and he said that was a USPS product name. It is not.
Now you're going to call me stupid dummy idiot moron "that's what what he meant" stupid dumbass moron idiot etc. But the point was, the bank told me to purchase a product that does not exist, and that's a WTF regardless of what you think of me.
-
@cartman82 With how terrible the USPS website and guidance is, I honestly don't blame those people. Hell if USPS printed the envelope I'd have saved a lot of Xerox-wrangling, too.

Maybe. I still think it's funny that you publicly complain that you don't know how to mail a letter.
-
@blakeyrat Maybe I missed something but why did you need to print the envelope anyway? Do you not have any pens?
-
@boomzilla
Mailing a letter != Sending an Overnight MailNow that you banned your reading comprehension alt, you have to read things yourself?
-

Why is it funny? Nobody's born with the knowledge, USPS' website certainly isn't helpful, and I haven't had to mail anything in... what... 5 years? Long enough that I have to look up how every single time. I'm sorry I'm so stupid retard idiot moron etc. for you, but that's the facts and I'm not going to lie about something so trivial to make myself look good. Or whatever you expected me to do.

I don't either.
So far, I've managed to avoid situations in life where I'd have to learn.
If nothing else, there's the unprepared idiot holding back the queue trick to fall back to.

I didn't need to. I wanted to so the address would be legible.

I'm sitting on a giant throne of pens at all times.

Like...go to the post office and tell you what you want. @cartman82 is right. Going there ensures you pay the right amount, etc. I would expect you to be an adult. What would you do if they told you to send it any other way? FedEx / UPS?
-
Registered mail is probably not what you want.
You probably want Express mail. For which you need to go to the Post office, and they'll take your nicely printed envelope, drop it into a bigger envelope, print a shipping label and slap it on.
(I am unfortunately a bit of an expert on the USPS because of my work)

That seems like it could get accidentally really uncomfortable. Though I suppose YMMV and I'm not here to kink shame.

All of which you can do at the automated kiosk also. Which usually has no line.

I'm going to, but here's a shocker:
I need to know whether or not to bring an envelope along before I go there. Which is why I was looking that up. I don't have some kind of portable backpack-sized laser printer I can easily carry around, I know, what a freak I am the only one not carrying a laser printer at all times.
@boomzilla said in Blakeyrat has to send a letter to a bank, a tweet story:

I'm sorry, am I handling the problem in some non-adult way? What the fuck do you think I should be doing instead of what I'm doing, exactly?
@boomzilla said in Blakeyrat has to send a letter to a bank, a tweet story:

Probably the same exact thing I'm doing now. Looking up how online before I go down to the physical store.
@weng said in Blakeyrat has to send a letter to a bank, a tweet story:

What I want is "Overnight Mail" but that does not exist. Remember? The first bit of the story?
I don't need the envelope to move quickly (hell, it could take a full 90 days and I'd be out nothing), I need it to move securely. My understanding is that Registered Mail is exactly that.

Ship places always have envelopes, and for over night shipments, they'll generally require that you put it in one of theirs.

Right; and had I researched it, I probably would have discovered that. But that's moot, since I'm dealing with USPS. But I'm not like you, I somehow didn't come out of the womb with the knowledge that UPS and FedEx kiosks provide you envelopes.
@boomzilla said in Blakeyrat has to send a letter to a bank, a tweet story:

No, I'm happier when I can whine about your whining.

I usually write on envelopes with a pen, like a heathen. I can carry a pen with me to the post office.
My bigger problem is, are they going to make me pay $10 for a box of envelopes when I only want one? So I keep a box around anyway, and err on the side of putting it in the envelope before I go.
It seems like I should be able to do all this shit from my home printer, drop it in the postbox, and be done. Packages in theory you could schedule to be picked up. But in practice I always end up driving to the post office and explaining what I need to the bored, cynical lady behind the counter. Then she punches like ten buttons worth of options on a screen and demands to know if I need a receipt like I offended her somehow.

If you're using their (USPS) express mail envelop, no. They're free. (I use the flat rate envelop - works fine for a standard 8.5.x11 sheet of paper. In fact, you can fit almost an inch stack of paper.)
-
Do not confused Registered Mail with Certified Mail. Use the wrong one, and you will likely not get what you are looking for (protection in the even things "go wrong").
-
Yet going to the post office is still a better experience than configuring sendmail
-
@wharrgarbl Except for right before Christmas.

She was actually very nice, and their AC was turned on full-blast which I approve of when it's 91 out. Actually talking to the postal worker was surprisingly the least WTF part of this whole process.

AIUI, Certified mail gets you a receipt and a signature-upon-delivery that they store for 2 years, and you can also purchase Return Receipt service to have a copy of the signature sent to you.
Registered Mail does largely the same, but also includes secure transport options (locked cages/sealed containers while in transit) along with an electronic log of who signed the parcel over to whom at every stage of the delivery process. Plus you can buy insurance on the shipment.
-
@e4tmyl33t I didn't ask. I just thought it was funny he bothered to type that "don't pick the wrong one! oooOOOoooOOO!" scare without bothering to explain which of the two was the wrong one. Did you know Intel used to send him prototype CPUs? That's how smart and successful and amazing CPUWizard is.

It's a good thing the AC was turned on then

My procedure for sending registered mail:
1: Take documents to send and put in envelope.
2: Type address on envelope.
3: Take envelope to nearest postal service point.
4: Hand over envelope and request registered mail.
5: Pay the fee and done. Now, if they would have said "send by overnight mail" I would (up until recently) have looked at them in a fashion as all mail was overnight by default. Although now we got express mail instead, which does includes tracking and next day delivery insurance.

It can arrive the next day. It might arrive next week. From across town.

(I am unfortunately a bit of an expert on the USPS because of my work)In Canada it is like this, but far worse. They completely ignore your nicely printed envelope that you prepared before walking in and hand you a form where you now have to write down sender's name, address, and your information while standing at the counter. Next they type your ugly handwritten address back into their computer. Finally, part of the form is a sticker that they then take off the form and stick on their bigger envelope.
... because, PROGRESS!
Not that UPS is any better if you just walk in without a preprinted label. This process of hand written forms completely baffles me in 2017. And don't get me started on the day when another company down the street with "Computers" also in their company name managed to use our UPS account as the sender of a package because of this antiquated process.

"overnight mail" means it's GUARANTEED to get there overnight. It refers to the guarantee not "eh it happens to work most of the time I guess" factor.
Anyway in the US (I dunno where you are) normal 1st class mail generally takes 2-3 days to cross the country.

Pretty sure you have to do that in US too. At least if you want insurance. Registered mail too I believe.

There are many details (e4tmyl33t is fairly close) and if I attempted to cover everything then I would be (morally) assuming liability.
Thus it was better to simply point out that there were choices, and allow you to do the research. Based on your previous postings it seems probable that you were not even aware of the two.
-
I just wonder how far from a post office @blakeyrat lives if he can't afford to go to post office a second time if it turns out he was unprepared on his first try.

Eww. The rubber on Wacom pens can get really gross as it ages. It gets sticky.
-
@gąska I just looove going to the post office. It's the highlight of my day. Sometimes I go two or three times. Once, I even stopped in just to say hi!
... said no one at all in the history of ever. Even if it wasn't 91 degrees outside -- which you should be aware it was, since Blakey did say so before your post -- that travel time is wasted time he'll never get back, additional cognitive load for tacking an unexpected continuation onto his transaction, wasted money (gas, mass transit fare, or walking time), etc. It's so much better to be prepared so you can one-and-done.
-
@twelvebaud remember that doing research and preparing mail on your own takes non-zero time too - and if you do it wrong, also money. So it's a trade-off between risk of becoming misinformed by bad or out of date Wikihow article v. wasting an afternoon at mail office.
Or he could just call USPS customer service. Even including hold time, it would probably be faster than doing your own research (and slightly more likely to be correct).
-

You've clearly never encountered USPS customer service...
-
@sloosecannon I've once made Verizon customer service refund me money. I probably wouldn't have too much problem with USPS, unless they outright lied to me about their own services.

On a scale from 0 to Telstra, how difficult is that?
-
@deadfast I spent over an hour going in circles with the representative. I asked to speak with supervisor three times, and three times I was put on told for ten minutes, after which she told me every time she spoke with her supervisor and they said the same thing she told me before. Then I started swearing and talking shit at their whole department and 2 minutes later I've got refund.
-
@gąska I see... So about a five then :P
