RE: Sublime Text 2 chokes on long lines
Speaking of sensible paper I just discovered that the printer in our office can print on both sides. It prints one side, partially spits it out, sucks it back in and then prints the other side. I spent five minutes watching this this morning. I now have half the works of Shakespeare on my desk.
And if you flip the sheets over you'll find the other half!

Apple keyboards used to have Clear instead of NumLock, because only inferior shitty PC computers even have the concept of "numlock". Which is stupid.
Well actually mine isn't Clear or Num Lock, it's "Silent Alarm" -

RE: Of vim and other text editor hackery
Hey, you're free to use regexs if you like. I think Vim has the best regexs around -- mostly because I can't live without
\zs
.I'm just not so hot on everyone suggesting ugly regexs all the time. They just look like hell. Meanwhile all the main Vim commands like d to delete, e for end-of-word and . to repeat changes are simple. And usually they are all you need. And you can see if they're working as you go.
Let's not forget, though, for the general version of this problem the real answer is to just have the computer do it for you. Type
console.log(Object.keys(x))
at the end, select all the lines and type!nodejs
Enter.I mean you're already on the computer, right?

RE: Soda swiper
When I was in 5th grade, my class went on a LOT of field trips to Seattle Center. We were supposed to visit the science center and learn stuff, but instead my cruel friends and I would hang out by the giant gumball machine. We figured out that you could put in a quarter, turn it verrrry slowly until the gumball drops, and then turn it back, and take your quarter out. The mechanism didn't reach the no-turning-back point soon enough.
But the BEST part was that the next random kid that came along with a quarter would get NO gumball. So we'd wait in the shadows and delight in his/her sadness. We had way too many gumballs to enjoy but we couldn't get enough crying kids. Especially the ones that would beg and beg their parents for a quarter, only to receive nothing.

RE: More stupid Git errors THIS TIME IN FIRST-PERSON!
Blakey -- You have a bunch of almost-good arguments. The problem is they are undermined by your lack of understanding of DVCS concepts. And you're right, Git's UI should teach you those concepts. But it doesn't. And light bulbs should work forever. But they don't.
So go learn. Read Pro Git or something or watch some videos. Not only will this make your life a lot easier, you will be able to formulate arguments that are actually convincing to the people you are trying to convince.
As it is, it's very hard to take your arguments as anything but idiotic ramblings. Because that's what they sound like. But somewhere in there you are actually right. Fix it.

RE: More stupid Git errors THIS TIME IN FIRST-PERSON!
Ok but so what? I don't want to learn the concepts of actually flying the plane. I just want to get to Tulsa in a short amount of time. Millions of people every day fly in planes without learning the concepts of actually flying them.
I've never had, or expressed, any desire to learn the internals of Git.
And you don't have to. In order to fly on a commercial plane to Tulsa, it is important to:
- Know what time you need to be there
- Know what/where the "gate" is
- Know you need your ticket and ID and how to check in
- Know what's OK and not OK to bring on a plane
- Know about baggage check and baggage claim and how to use it
- Actually want to go to Tulsa at this time
- And so much more!
None of these things are internal to how planes fly, but you're going to have a hard time and be all upset if you are missing any of them. And yet there are people who screw it up and get very angry. And it's [mostly] not because there's something wrong with air travel, it's just that these people are stupid or ignorant.
Being ignorant on purpose is even worse.

RE: Of vim and other text editor hackery
Guys. Mappings? Regexs?! I'm so dissapointed in the Vim brain trust today.
Try starting at the { and do this:
qqJa"Esce.ldeq2@qJ
Which means:
qq record
J join lines
a"Esc append quote
e. another quote at the end
l go right
de delete to the end of the number
q stop
2@q replay twice
J join linesI also didn't replace the {}. If you find yourself needing to do this a lot, I recommend the surround plugin. Then you can just do:
cs{[ change surrounding { to [

RE: Software problems that really ought to be solved by now
My ideal bug tracker would make it as effortless as possible to ... track bugs.
This means I should be able to:
- create a new bug, or update a bug by just clicking and typing - not going through some major multi-step process.
- reprioritize bugs relative to one another by clicking and dragging - not going through some major multi-step process.
I've never found anything that does both of these without show-stopping problems like absolutely no ownership of bugs or something insane like that.

RE: Just use sublime text (anti-vim rant)
This thread has inspired me to count my .vimrc and it's... [drumroll]... 880 lines! Do I get a prize?
I guess that's just because Vim out-of-the-box is 880 lines away from being the text editor I wanted in the first place. I don't think that's so bad. I couldn't write my own that worked worth a shit in only 880 lines.
I don't know about you guys, but I don't hate things I don't have to use. If you don't want to customize or use Vim then... don't? And don't? Easy solutions for easy problems and all that.

Oh yeah: Git is a piece of shit.
You don't even know if you want, need or use "it" b/c you don't know what "it" is. Please go learn.

RE: More stupid Git errors THIS TIME IN FIRST-PERSON!
Git is a 4 handle, dual boiler espresso machine – when all they need is instant.
That's alright I guess. If all you need is instant, then sure, make the instant. But if you are out of instant and you have to use the espresso machine, don't just randomly push buttons on it or assume it works like instant. Learn how to use it correctly.

RE: And THIS kind of BS is EXACTLY why I have NoScript ON by default, EVERYWHERE
Even if it was Javascript's fault (looks like it's not) what is the point in turning it off by default? The only sites that would be a security risk to you will be ones you are actually doing business with, which would be, I suspect, the same ones you would whitelist.
You can't win, basically. Just give up.

RE: Why is Everybody so clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses?
Psychology
This entire thread is just so... fascinating... from a psychological perspective. I think this warrants a whole new syndrome: Swamp Syndrome?
Here are some things to think about:
1. SpectateSwamp believes that Windows Explorer is the Windows Operating System, in full.
2. SpectateSwamp thinks a 10,000 line, VB6 implementation of Notepad search is surely within 2-3% of the simplest possible implementation.
3. One day, in 1975, SpectateSwamp learned how to use a hammer to hammer nails into a wall. Later, he was tasked with painting the wall. He cleverly used the one tool he knew and loved, the ever powerful hammer, for the job. He dipped the hammer in the paint and rubbed it on the wall, and six days later: success! Sure it wasn't the prettiest wall, but it worked. His friend, Montpelier, saw SpectateSwamp proudly admiring his wall, and said, "Swamp! I thought you'd like to know, you could use this paint brush to paint the wall. It's just right for it!" But SpectateSwamp had already proven that all other tools were unnecessary, and he replied, "Silly Montpelier! How do you expect the masses to learn a different tool for each and every job? That's so many tools! So inefficient!" Montpelier shrugged and tried to avoid SpectateSwamp from then on. But SpectateSwamp still shows up uninvited for lunch at Montepelier's on occasion, to spout off all the great uses of his ever powerful Hammer. (Like for mixing pudding, swatting flies, cleaning the litter box, and for scrubbing oneself in the shower.)
4. SpectateSwamp is not against using meaningful variable names or labels, he's just never been exposed to the concept. Every time he skims a post that mentions the idea, he discards it as some mumb-jumbo probably to do with those "regulated expresses."
5. SpectateSwamp also uses the hammer to type his code. And it works.

RE: Google's latest Unitard - Arsenic Manipulation Pathologically
YARLY.
I got the keycaps custom printed from WASDKeyboards.com and popped them onto a Filco Tenkeyless. WASD can also make you the whole board but I like my Filcos.
You can reuse my SVG if you want. It's over here: http://superjer.com/lies/wasd-hieroglyphs-104-v2.svg
I tried to match up the glyphs to the equivalent English letters. For the numbers I put the glyphs for the powers of ten. I'm not an Egyptologist though. For modifier keys and etc I just picked whatever looked good.

RE: Google's latest Unitard - Arsenic Manipulation Pathologically
Mine's not for sale! It's MINE!
It's too good a deterrent for people at the office wanting to use my computer.
"Let me do this thing on your computer real quick!" looks at keyboard "Never mind, I'll use my own computer."

RE: Keypeen
Which keyboard is that and where did you get it?
I designed it on http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/, but I didn't like the board very much so I moved the keys to my trusty Filco.
I just wanted a keyboard that would really make people say WTF when they try to use my computer. I posted about it on my site back when I got it: http://www.superjer.com/forum/my_new_insane_keyboard.php

RE: MS SQL Permissions
I also can't think of anything that would justify allowing the configuration as Blakey's described. This does however leave open the remote possibility that there is something I can't think of. I know, rite?
But it's worse than that. Apparently you can see the view if you look in the right place. "Oh that view? Yeah, never heard of it OR I'm not allowed to tell you about it. But if you look over there in the schema you might find it anyways."
Reminds me of EVERY WEBSITE EVER where I go to recover my password and it says "Oh that account? Yeah maybe it exists, and if it does, we'll send you an email. But if you go to the registration page we'll just fucking tell you as soon as you enter something in the name field."

RE: More stupid Git errors THIS TIME IN FIRST-PERSON!
It stands for "distributed". The benefits of which is:
-
Every person working with the project has a full copy of the repo (i.e. you can't check-out selected files which is incredibly handle to have)
-
You can work offline
I don't need or want "benefit" 1) or 2).
Well that's a start. There's a lot more to learn than that though. Writing it all off as "I don't need it" is a big part of why you have so much trouble.

RE: More stupid Git errors THIS TIME IN FIRST-PERSON!
But git is like being handed a transmission, and engine and some wheels and being told: "Hey, here you go, you can build exactly the vehicle you need for your trip—it's not for us to dictate how you make your journey."
Well OK I guess I'm not using Git "right" then because I've always just used it as it comes, right out of the box. I didn't ever have to assemble anything. Maybe you guys are spending too much time trying to make Git into the old system you used to have, instead of just learning the new system.
-
RE: More stupid Git errors THIS TIME IN FIRST-PERSON!
So when people are advising to use git fetch instead of git pull they're really advising to use git pull -r instead of git pull?
I like to use
git fetch
instead ofgit pull
.git fetch
will update (for example) my origin/master branch so that I can do things likegit diff origin/master master
which will show me the differences between my master and origin's. Then, while on my master branch, I might dogit merge origin/master
to merge in origin's stuff.Alternatively I might do
git rebase origin/master
which will rearrange things so that my local master commits are now after everything on origin/master.That's an example of why/how you might use fetch, anyway.
-
RE: More stupid Git errors THIS TIME IN FIRST-PERSON!
It's probably because he still hasn't figured out that the repo and the working copy are two different things. (Which isn't even a Git-specific idea.) He's still all nervous and paranoid from using CVCS's where your precious work lives in the working copy for way too long, and has to survive merges, human error and things without actually being tracked by your VCS.

RE: Just use sublime text (anti-vim rant)
Me not using vim won't cause reasons why I hate vim go away. Just like me not eating food I hate won't make this food taste better.
I guess that explains why I'm always going onto food forums and telling everyone how awful shrimp is.

RE: More stupid Git errors THIS TIME IN FIRST-PERSON!
THE MAN HAS EATEN HIS FISH BUT HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO FlSH
It seems to me the chances of someone not being able to understand that message, using CLI Git on a platform that uses 'rm' to remove things are vanishingly small. Especially compared to the vastly more people who understand it fine and can just click on it to run the command right away.
Also I thought you didn't want to have to learn how to fish?

RE: Recycle bin can't handle long filenames
You're not supposed to put the file contents in the filename!
Why not? That's the secret sauce to my filesystem: BigDataFS. It's amazing. There is no limit to the filesize, or number of files on even a small device, instant retrieval, it works in any language, without libraries. The only downside is that BDFS can't tell you whether a file already exists or not. But that's easy to work around.
-
RE: Hey SourceTree, I WANNA DELETE MY LOCAL BRANCH MESSINESS!
ProTip: Branches are just tiny files inside .git/refs/heads
Just delete the files. You can do it with File Explorer for instance and it probably lets you select them in a sane way you already know/like.

RE: And THIS kind of BS is EXACTLY why I have NoScript ON by default, EVERYWHERE
It's not just security issues; it's also about stopping intrusive ads and data harvesting
I mean, I'm not a huge fan of intrusive ads nor data harvesting but neither one of those compares to getting malware infected or passwords stolen.

RE: Found my first C project
At least command lines are precise. I can email a beginner a command to run and they can just copy/paste it.
With GUIs it's like "click this thing, then this other thing shows up, don't click that, click this other thing. Wait. There's no Properties button? What do you see on the screen? Read me everything you see on the screen. No, start reading from the top. No. Higher up. No -- up under the title bar. No! Not the title bar itself! Fuck your MOM! Fuck your MOM! ...etc."

RE: Permissions on Linux
Ahhhh SELinux. Unless you yourself ARE the NSA, you almost certainly do not need that level of security. Just turn it off permanently. Or you can take the time to whitelist every single file access you may ever want to do, which is what SELinux basically is.
-
RE: Temporary paths
...folders named like C:\b39ecdd40a998a32a2 that have a bunch of unpacked installery stuff inside.
I'm still waiting for a future when installers don't need to unpack temp files anywhere, but just INSTALL files where they are intended to go in the first place. I know, it's pretty unrealistic.

RE: Price Rollback WTF
have you asked them to get the fourth from stock out back?
That would be a pretty advanced strategy. Instead I've decided to just use the U-scan and scan one of the DP10x12s twice so I can at least save the $2.
