RE: Search results for ${query}
Shitty Javascript is a dime a dozen these days, but this is still pretty bad. Here's some particularly retarded snippets:
function openWindow2(theURL,winName,features) { window.open(theURL,winName,features); } function randInt(min,max) { var div = (max - min) + 1 var randNum = Math.random() for (var i = 0; i <= div - 1; i++) { if (randNum >= i / div && randNum < (i+1) / div) {return i + min} } } function swapBanners() { var abc = randInt(1,3); //var bannerDiv = document.getElementById("Java_banner"); if (abc == 1) { document.write(Banner1); } if (abc == 2) { document.write(Banner2); } if (abc == 3) { document.write(Banner3); } }

The captcha sucks, so this was inevitable. Alex probably expected it, though.

The real WTF is using inline PHP. Nothing good comes from a PHP file that doesn't start and end with the PHP tag.
Wait, I thought inlining was the whole point of PHP? Otherwise, why not use a real language?
I consider Python to be easier to learn than PHP, and I've been working with PHP a lot longer than I have with Python. It has a much better standard function library than PHP, seeing as PHP's function library is very poorly modularized and follows absolutely no standards with regards to function naming, return values, parameter ordering, etc. PHP's only saving grace in this regard is its fantastic online documentation, which unfortunately Python has yet to match (although Python's support for docstrings make an online manual much less of a necessity). Also, I find Python's syntax to be more intuitive than PHP's mismash of Perl, C, and Java, although that's more subjective.
Oh, and the closing tag (?>) for a PHP file is optional. It's actually better to leave it out for files that are included, because if you don't you'll run into problems if there's whitespace after the ?> and the file is included before headers are sent. Whitespace after the closing ?> causes PHP to send the headers for that page, and attempting to output any headers after that (by, say, calling session_start()) will cause a PHP error. This can be tricky to debug, and I say that from experience. Of course, if you use a sane language, you don't have to worry about such things. -
RE: Tv, so last century
You could do what several people here do (ender, Lingerance, Random822) and watch anime. Tons of variety there, and places like Netflix have a good selection. If you want to view current shows you'll have to use torrents or steaming video sites like stage6.com, which probably isn't feasible with a shitty internet connection. You're not missing out on much though, since IMO the only good shows this season are Clannad and Higurashi Kai.

Praying is a pointless activity. Praying for non-existent things as "souls" is even more pointless.
Actually, scratch that, studies have shown that praying is detrimental. See this: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/31/health/31pray.html?pagewanted=2

Obviously the programmer is an Objectivist and is merely trying to apply Rand's (in)famous statement to programming.
On a related note, I bet Rand would approve of this thread.

RE: Is it too late to make money off of old people who are confused by the internet?
Man, you guys are really easy to troll. When faced with a thread like this, the best response (if you're not a mod) is to rate it a 1 and move on. Calling CPound a jerk is a waste of time, since I can guarantee you he doesn't care, and most likely finds it amusing.

RE: DreamWeaver Tips and tricks!!
The real WTF is that people still waste their time typing SGML comments at the beginning and end of code inside <script> tags. The reason that practice was started was to hide JS code from ridiculously old browsers (i.e. Netscape 3.0) that don't recognize the <script> tag. Pretty much nobody uses those browsers anymore, and I doubt even 1% of the people that continue the practice bother testing their sites in them.

RE: A thought for WTF code...
That's pretty much how you would go about exploiting a program with buffer overflow vulnerabilities to have it execute arbitrary code. There's a really good 10-year-old article on doing just that: http://insecure.org/stf/smashstack.html

RE: My teammates screwed me (not boring)
Talk to the professor about it. If he's not a jerk and/or idiot he'll understand, although if you haven't done so already you really should have when the problems started.

RE: Can none of these people use punctuation
Probably the result of a lazy web developer trying to avoid XSS/SQL Injection vulnerabilities. Did you tell them about it in the message? If they're competent they'll appreciate the feedback, although that's a big "if" in this case.

RE: Web site help
Well, assuming the site is a bunch of static HTML files, updating would be as simple as replacing the file(s) on the server. Keep a copy of everything on the server on your computer, make any changes that come up, then test/preview them locally and upload them back to the server. If the site doesn't use a version control system (which is likely), always make backups before uploading. Setting up a version control system would make file management easier, but probably wouldn't be worth the effort for such a small site.
Learning HTML is pretty simple with the huge amount of tutorials/resources available online. Just google for "HTML Tutorial" and you'll find hundreds. My favorite is W3Schools, which also has tutorials for Javascript and CSS. It looks like the site only uses Javascript for image rollovers, which is boilerplate code that won't require any changes, so you shouldn't need to know it.I don't see why you'd need authentication for donations. What is it about Paypal that you find lacking?

RE: Binary trees i need a help with making recursive functions non-recursive
Let me guess: this is your homework assignment for CSCI 2270. First result on googling "bintree.h" is this, and that's the website for Michael Main, who happens to be teaching Data Structures this semester.

RE: Firefox "Compatible"
I wonder what would happen if you try to transfer the music they sell to something other than the Zune. Let me guess:
If you are using Apple iPod, please follow this step by step guide on how to enable the iPod to play the tracks you have purchased:- Purchase a replacement circuit board, clickerwheel, hard drive, and LCD for the Zune music player from your local Microsoft manufacturing center.
- Place your iPod on a hard, flat surface.
- Using a Dremel or other rotary device, carefully cut away the shell of your iPod.
- Remove the circuitry and other parts from your iPod, leaving only the shell.
- Insert the Zune internal components into the iPod casing. You may have to widen the case to accommodate the Zune LCD display.
- Using duct tape, secure the components to the casing. You may now play Zipit-licensed music on your iPod music player.
- Purchase a replacement circuit board, clickerwheel, hard drive, and LCD for the Zune music player from your local Microsoft manufacturing center.

RE: Scholarly WTF
[quote user="bobday"]I just tried that, and it didn't work. Could they have already fixed it?
[/quote]Seems so. The original article I used the hack with doesn't work anymore. Unfortunately, I already put that URL in my "Works Cited" list and turned in the paper. Hopefully my professor won't notice/care.
And no, I didn't tell them about the security holes.

RE: Scholarly WTF
Why the hell did the forum software insert all the extra <br> tags in the code blocks? Those weren't there before.

Scholarly WTF
I spent last night repeating the age-old college tradition of writing a research paper the night before it's due. Naturally, this involved many searches through Google Scholar and whatever other journal search engines I could access to find appropriate sources. One site in particular, Questia, had a lot of articles I wanted to read and reference, but without a subscription you're only allowed to view the first few paragraphs. However, I noticed that the URLs for journal articles had an unusual format:
http://questia.com/PM.qst?a=o&d=<article number>&er=deny
Out of pure curiosity, I tried changing "deny" to "allow". Questia happily gave me access to the entire article. This works with all the articles I found find, and Wikipedia says Questia as over 1,500,000 articles.
The fun doesn't stop there though. Questia provides a toolbar at the top of each article with buttons like "cite" and "print", but clicking on them pops up a message requiring you to login before you're allowed to access the feature. The page obviously used Javascript for the pop-up, so I tried looking at the page source to see what I could find and saw this:
/*
* Flag that indicates if the user is currently logged it.
*/
common.isLoggedIn = false;
...citationTool.createCitation = function() {
if ( common.isLoggedIn ) {
var url = '/PreferencesNoAppletMediator.qst?action=getPrefs&prefType=citation&url=/CitationHandler.qst?' +
'citeaction=createCitationBegin¤t_docid='+common.docId+'&citation_text='+citationTool.getSelectedText();
common.openWindow(url, 'Citation', 600, 500);
} else {
common.showFeatureDialog( this.helpMessage() );
}
}
Since I was using Firefox, all I needed to do to get around it was put "javascript:common.isLoggedIn = true;" in my address bar. I think I'm going to send a letter to Questia thanking them for their horrible security. Without it I probably wouldn't have finished my paper on time.

[quote user="HeroreV"]OMG! They aren't specifying the character encoding! What a huge WTF!

RE: School WTF
This is only a WTF if your college is accredited. Many private non-accredited colleges exist for the gullible and/or short-sighted, and something like this would be par for the course in such an institution.
