RE: Discourse and our reaction to it
The only downside is that you don't get to use "awesome" new software like Discourse. Did I say awesome? I meant "brillant"
Is that "Brilliant" in the Arther Shappey sense? (Cabin Pressure)

RE: Discourse and our reaction to it
Well, from my own point of view, I really don't care what forum software is used here - though to be fair about it I am aware that I do not post as often as many users. I'm interested in Discourse, partly because I like to see someone take a different take on things, and partly because I have been considering implementing it myself.
Speaking as a developer though, can we all (TDWTF & Discourse) just cut the abuse / sniping. It serves no-one's interest, and it's not professional.
The final decision is down to Alex - it's not a democracy. I think Alex has to carefully consider that he risks alienating and losing SOME users, and that some of those users likely contribute a higher proportion of the content than might be expected, but that's his bag. It's his site.
Personally, I don't plan on rage quitting based on which forum we use.

RE: Discourse and our reaction to it
I am trying to stress the opportunity here...
Why so negative? Does your mother speak ill of me?
-
RE: Discourse and our reaction to it
I'm DumbByAssociation - which is too long to use as a username here apparently...

RE: Discourse and our reaction to it
How fundamental is that though?
Is there, for instance, a chance of Discourse implementing a paginated / everything on the one page view as a configuration setting?
Ok - so they load posts using JS - no reason they can't, if they chose, load a topic full...

Discourse and our reaction to it
Chaps / Chapesses,
Ok then - we're looking at Discourse - and there are problems... It can't be said that all has gone well, but let's just take stock for a minute...
We are, as a site, very good at spotting faults / criticising software - it's what we do, quite literally, for fun. We're looking for a decent forum, and we're not afraid to be bleeding edge. Discourse may have their problems, but look how they have reacted to the feedback they have received... Their devs, including him with the penchant for overly expensive keyboards, are all over us like a rash now.
Why? Simple - they know a good thing when they see it - they know they are going to get worthwhile feedback and participation here... We on the other hand are sick of faulty software - and in Discourse have a team of folks who are apparently seriously motivated to fix it.
This is a chance to give back to a worthwhile Open Source project.
Discuss (or engage in Discourse, if you will...)

RE: Vote of No Confidence
For my part, I'm conflicted... I've been aware of Discourse for a while, and have been looking forward to having a chance to try it out on an actual board with actual members...
Everything takes a little getting used to, and such a shift away from the traditional BB format was always going to be something we would have to get accustomed to - personally, I don't think it's had it's full crack of the whip yet...

Really folks?
Just tried to look at two different files in Excel 2010, in different folders, that happen to have the same filename...
Alrighty then...
- What kind of developer writes an application which can't cope with two files with same filename? Not instance ID... Not even path... FILENAME...
- Why, when they wrote the code to show the messagebox, did it not occur to them that perhaps software development wasn't their calling?

RE: Google has a Clippy?
Actually - not every forum is pants... Check out Jeff Attwood's "Discourse"

"We have never employed a developer I actually respected..."
The latest from my favourite technical architect...
"In all the time I have worked here, we have never employed a developer I actually respected..."
Three things really stand out here...
- He managed to say this whilst sitting at his desk inside the development office, with eight developers in attendance, and yet still somehow lives...
- He was actually involved in the interview process that selected most of us.
- None of the developers respect HIM.
Personally, I've had enough. I'm outta here...

So what did you tell him?
I didn't - it wasn't me he asked. The person he spoke with literally said "Launch Firefox, put the address in the address bar..."

RE: The TA Rides Again!
I like that idea...
The problem with this chap is that he's established, and has managed to convince (It's depressing to even think how) those higher on the food chain that he really knows what he's doing. He's a figure of fun amongst the developers though, and probably knows it. In some ways I almost feel sorry for him - and would have more sympathy if he wasn't a total jerk...
-
The TA Rides Again!
”When you say load the site in Firefox, how do you do that?” - quoth the Technical Architect.
I've blundered through the last few years believing this chap to be a fool - I'm now however thinking of sending my department manager a thank you card for laying on the entertainment...
-
Someone get me a belt fed weapon...
In the past couple of hours I have just learned that our Techincal Architect hitherto believed that Java could only connect to web services running in PHP on Linux boxes... That's the architect who thinks I am the muppet in residence here...
Then, from our crack VB.Net paramilitary wing, we have this...
Why the hell would you cast something to the type you already know it is> (No, there's nothing below this in the hierarchy) They've done this all over the place...
<html><body style='color:#000000; background:#ffffff; '>

RE: We don't need no stinkin' indexes
Reminds me of one of my previous employers (who had the services of three DBAs at the time) who didn't like Primary Keys on tables in Oracle. They used Unique Indexes instead. Things sort of came to a stalemate because every time I had to create a new table, it got created properly - PK and all. If I changed existing stuff they moaned, but so long as I created the table in first place, they let my PKs though.
Never did manage to get a justification for that madness out of them...

RE: XML is too difficult
I must admit - I have some sympathy with Blakeyrat's question there...
I would prepare a short summary on the multitude of reason why they shouldn't be using this payment processor, and then kick it towards management with enough force that it reaches someone intelligent enough to query whether you really should be in bed with these guys.

RE: Negative Count
@GoatRider said:
Defensive programming. There could be a bug either in the list code or the use of it where the count could go negative, for example when something is deleted too many times. I've been bitten by bugs like that, you never forget.
Personally, I would have used "x.Count<1"
Whilst I appreciate where you're coming from, the List I speak of is a .Net List<T>... If that goes negative, I'll worry...
-
Negative Count
From our code base... x is a List<T>...
if (x == null || x.Count <= 0)
What the hell was going through the developer's mind when they wrote that? *head-desk*

With so much stress on the fact it must be done, you would think the author would have:
- Called it something you're less likely to hate typing in, and
- Actually provide a hint as to WHY it must be done...

RE: Applebees Fail.
Blown a field in the database would be my guess, but I haven't looked too closely...

RE: Inspirational Stuff...
If you employ a proper technical architect, perhaps...
Ours wants to dominate and rule - preferably everything. Even our team manager has now become subservient to his whim...
Some people's personality should simply preclude them from certain roles...

RE: Inspirational Stuff...
TA here is Technical Architect...
Yes, my username is derived from my rather unpleasant association with this individual. I'm sick of people assuming we're crap, because we're not - but this TA would have you believe he is the only person capable of intelligent thought...
How many of us in this office are capable of innovation and design? I'd say 80% of us. True, there are some people who are PERCEIVED as weaker developers, but being fair to them they are never given a chance to demonstrate what they can do because the environment they work in is so restrictive. Also, as a TA (with pretentions of leadership), I would have thought the smart thing to do with weaker developers is to mentor them - give them guidance - and not marginalise them...
... but then what would I know? I'm not the TA...

RE: One room, many exits
Humanely destroy the author to prevent repetition and serve as a deterrent to the survivors?
-
Inspirational Stuff...
Whilst I'm wondering through the site - another little burst of inspiration from my TA last week...
"We don't have any developers capable of design and innovation..."
This spoken by a man with questionable at best credentials in either area, in a 20ft square room containing at another 8 developers...

RE: Taking out code
My response would be "Look, you're a PM. This doesn't affect your estimates or deliveries - but insisting on trying to tell us how to do our own jobs (wholly unconnected with your own) will.".
If that doesn't work, dig out the felt tips and "amend" his Gantt charts until he gets the message...

RE: Hit with the stupid branch...
The problem (I'm the OP) isn't helped by the closed minded nature if the tech lead in question - he doesn't react well to input, constructive or otherwise...
One of his most famous utterances was asking myself and a colleague what "protected" does in C#. That was a bit of a "wind your jaw back up" moment for me.

Hit with the stupid branch...
The project I am working on at the moment has about 5 developers, and one of them, and our technical lead has decided that he needs to make massive changes throughout the codebase for something he is working on. He has therefore checked out vast swathes of code, exclusively, preventing the rest of us for about two hours from going about our daily business of developing stuff.
I suggest (remember, this is the tech lead) that he might like to think about branching the project (we're working with TFS) and then merging his changes when he's happy - but no. Apparently, in his eyes at least, we have no-one in this office capable of branching and merging correctly. This struck me as rather odd, because I personally have nearly 15 years experience in writing software, and I don't look on simple repository actions like this as being beyond my wit...
It should also be pointed out of course that, not believing in branching in the first place, he has never asked anyone in here to work with branches. In other words, he hasn't the slightest bloody clue what people know on the topic - and we ALL KNOW THAT.
The man never fails to shock me - and is the main reason I have decided to take an account here. I'll be needing it to let of steam.
Anyway, back to the coalface...
