I know this is necroposting, but I'm sure other people are bothered by stumbling across references that nobody follows up on. I believe the following is correct.
According to Google, the Nick Wirth referenced by @Ancient_Hacker is Niklaus Wirth, who released a book in 1984 called Algorithms and Data Structures. The relevant section is pages 116 and 117. He does not describe how to traverse a singly linked list backwards; instead, he gives a technique for inserting or removing an element without needing a reference to the element before it.
