There is one thing about this story that is puzzling me. If he owned the land, how exactly did he accidentally ride his Segway off a 30 ft cliff?
I'm guessing it involved the phrase "Hold my beer and watch this"

Why are you trying to edit the fla file directly? As I already mentioned in between all the off topic office file format ramblings, Flash has a perfectly good scripting feature (straight javascript, not proprietary crap) built into the application. There is no reason to directly mess with the fla.
Use the right tool for the job.

Race driving. I compete in a national series with 25 events in a year all over the country - so that $5k covers fees, wear and tear, the occasional obliteration of a car, consumables, bribery for codrivers and crew as needed, and fuel to lug the car and some sleeping accomodations around the country willy nilly. Trainspotting is for pansies.
LeMons? ChumpCar? That sounds like a good retirement to me...

But the real bastard is the Flash IDE which locks your code inside, so no script can automatically process it.
You just need to use the right script. Try JSFL:
http://livedocs.adobe.com/flash/9.0/main/flash_cs3_extending.pdf
That is the way to fully script the IDE and do stuff like pull out tons of crappy code from movieclips.
