Do meta tags do anything?

  • I still see some websites with keywords inside meta tags.  I was under the impression that most search engines ignore meta tags due to all the spamming going on (or whatever it's called, but basically I mean people who put up a page selling viagra and have meta tags that say it's page about lawn care)

So, is there some definitive reference that I can point to that says, "meta tags are useless"

  • Doubt it.  I'm pretty sure they're still in use.  The tags just have to agree with the page's content a little better not to get crapfiltered.  Emphasis on "a little better"

  • A lot of sites that do site tracking with WebTrends use metatags.

They run some javascript in the client to gather the data from the metatags to formulate a 1x1 pixel tag that points at WebTrends to build flashy reports

  • thx for the info

  • The search engines generally picks up the listings from the DMOZ directory. But now MSN has started to support the NO DMOZ Description tag. Google has also supported the tag. So now if the programmer uses that tag the Search engine will show the description in the search result listed in the Meta tag.
